Notes: Abstract Flow experiments through capillaries with 0.2% xanthan in aqueous solution and 0.1 N NaCl brine were carried out to study the influence of the molecular conformation on the flow development at relatively low shear rates, from 20s−1 to 400s−1. Capillaries with a wide range of length-to-diameter ratios, L/D = 4.5 to 1015 were used. The apparent viscosity as a function of L/D at a constant shear rate shows a continuous decrement of the viscosity as L/D increases, until an asymptotic value is reached. The decrement in the apparent viscosity is partially explained in terms of slip. It was found that slip is a function of L/D as well as shear stress, i.e., slip develops during flow, thus inducing spatial anisotropy in the fluid until a stable state is reached. However, the substantial difference in apparent viscosity between short capillaries and capillaries longer than 300 D may be attributed to dominant elongational flow due to the contraction in the small capillaries and slip in long capillaries. The flow in a sufficiently long capillary can be divided in four regions rather than three, as is usually assumed. In the first region, which corresponds to the entry, elongational and shear flow coexist and elongational flow dominant. In the second region, end effects and slip development are coupled. In the third region the flow is fully developed and end effects are negligible. However, the fluid shows physical characteristics different from those of the fluid at rest, as a consequence of prior slip development. The fourth zone is the exit region in which the velocity rearranges due to the change of boundary conditions. The length of each region depends on the conformation of the macromolecules and shear rate. In addition, it was found that the stiffness of xanthan increases with the increase of the ionic strength. Finally, a performance of Bagley's analysis in the whole range of L/D studied showed that the use of the Bagley correction is not a reliable way to correct for end effects when the flow is not fully developed and/or in the presence of slip.

Notes: Abstract We observed the fruit foraging behavior of mature female oriental fruit flies,Dacus dorsalis Hendel (Diptera, Tephritidae), released individually onto potted field-caged host trees containing fruit of different quality, quantity, or type (no fruit, 3 or 12 uninfested kumquats, 12 infested kumquats, or 3 uninfested sweet oranges). Our findings were largely consistent with foraging-behavior theory, and with previous results for Mediterranean fruit fly,Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), and the apple maggot fly,Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh): (1) flies left fruitless trees soon after release, (2) more flies visited fruit, and flies visited more fruit and spent more time on trees with increasing fruit density, and (3) Giving Up Time (time between last oviposition and leaving the tree) was significantly greater for flies visiting infested fruit than for those visiting uninfested fruit. Oriental fruit flies declined to oviposit in fruit containing conspecific larvae.

Notes: Abstract Apanteles telengai Tobias,Aleiodes gasteratus (Jurine) andCampoletis annulata Tschek parasitized significantly more healthy than granulosis virus (GV)-infectedAgrotis segetum D. & Schiff. larvae. Females of the three parasitoid species that had oviposited previously in GV-infectedA. segetum larvae transmitted the virus to healthyA. segetum larvae in subsequent oviposition.A. telengai andA. gasteratus females also transmitted the GV on unsuccessful oviposition attempts. Male parasites did not transmit the GV.

Notes: Abstract Mature oriental fruit fly females, Dacus dorsalis, from a population cultured on host fruit in the laboratory for one generation responded positively to visual and olfactory stimuli of individual natural kumquat (Fortunella japonica) and apple (Malus pumila) host fruit or models of these fruit hung from branches of potted trees in field enclosures. When females were exposed for 3 days to natural kumquats or apples on trees and subsequently released individually onto trees harboring one or the other of these fruit types, a significantly greater proportion of those exposed to kumquats than those exposed to apples or those not exposed to any fruit visited kumquats. Females exposed to kimquats for at least 3 days followed by at least 3 days of exposure to apples retained ability to find kumquats. Compared with females exposed to apples for 3 days or with naive females, females exposed to kumquats for 3 days exhibitied no less ability to find apples but did significantly refrain from accepting apples for oviposition. A final test was conducted in which females were exposed to natural kumquats or apples for 3 days and tested for response to inanimate models of either the same color and size as natural kumquats (orange, 20-mm diameter) or apples (green, 75-mm diameter) or models of the same color but opposite size. Results suggest that fruit size is the principal character learned and used in finding kumquats, which apparently are somewhat inconspicuous to an inexperienced foraging D. dorsalisfemale.

Notes: Summary The benzophenone sensitized photocycloaddition of 2,3-dimethylmaleimide to selenophene and 3,4-dimethylselenophene was carried out first to generalize the photoaddition reaction of methylmaleic anhydride derivatives to selenophene, using this time the nitrogen analogue, and second to reexamine the composition of the product mixture formed in the reaction. It was found that in adition to the 1:1 adduct isolated in previous investigations, three geometrical isomers may be proposed for the 2:1 adduct (two molecules of maleimide of one of selenophene or its methyl derivative).

Notes: Abstract The effects of methimazole, and antithyroid drug, on blood pressure and other parameters were evaluated in the established phase of Goldblatt two-kidney one clip (G2K-1C) hypertension. Methimazole was administered via drinking water for five weeks, starting five weeks after hypertension had been induced. After this period of treatment, similarly high blood pressures were observed in methimazole-treated and non-treated G2K-1C rats, despite the fact that a hypothyroid state had been achieved in methimazole-treated rats. Methimazole-treated G2K-1C rats showed reductions in heart rate, ventricular weight, ventricular/body weight ratio and mortality in comparison with rats not treated with methimazole. These results clearly demonstrate that hypothyroidism induced by methimazole: a) does not reverse G2K-1C hypertension, but b) improves the rate of survival and c) reduces relative cardiac hypertrophy, possibly by the reduction in cardiac work observed in Goldblatt hypothyroid rats.

Notes: Abstract Antibody binding site are formed by six hypervariable regions or complementarity determining regions (CDRs). The CDRs, three from the heavy chain and three from the light chain, are known as hypervariable segments and provide a surface, complementary to that of the epitope. In recent work it was found that the amino acids in these positions fulfill different functions: Some play a structural role and others are involved in the specificity-determining function. It is reported here that the frequency of amino acids at hypervariable sites is skewed. By means of an informational algorithm, key physicochemical attributes of the dominant residues were identified for some of those sites. The results for about 1,500 antibodies suggest that approximately 35% of sites involved in the recognition process require only general properties such as composition, volume, and bulk or hydrogen bonding which are satisfied by a small set of amino acids instead of any one particular complementary amino acid.

Notes: Abstract An indirect Spectrophotometric determination of carbonate is proposed. Dilute chloroform solutions of uranyl quinolin-8-olate are shaken with aqueous solutions of anion. The decoloration produced by ligand exchange varies linearly with the anion concentration. The addition of an ethanolic solution of benzyltributylammonium bromide to the organic solution instead of an excess of quinolin-8-ol improves the method. Different variables (pH, shaking time, ionic medium) were optimized. Carbonate concentration can be determined over the range 10–40 μg ml−1, showing a linear dependence, giving a precision of 2.4% for 30 μg ml−1 of carbonate in the aqueous phase. The tolerance levels of foreign ions are increased. Analysis of carbonate in mineral and sea waters and pharmaceutical samples was performed with success.
