Notes: Advertising is not a process by which gullible consumers are persuaded to buy things they don't want, according to the authors of this paper. Instead, it furnishes consumers with some useful information. It is not so much the claims made by advertisers that are helpful, but the fact that they are willing to spend extravagant amounts of money on a product that is informative. The authors find tentative evidence for this view of advertising and discuss its implications.

Notes: The takeover mechanism may have some effect on disciplining managers - but it also allows them to spend shareholders money on self promotion. The authors of this paper argue that if we had a better system of corporate governance with a revitalised role for independent directors fewer takeovers would occur, and calls for reform of the acquisition market would diminish.

Notes: It seems that everybody wants to know which companies are the most successful. To help throw light on the issue, and to do so more reliably than the plethora of league tables and charts produced by most business magazines, the London Business School have teamed up with The Economist to compile an assessment of the top performers of the 1980's.

Notes: It has become almost a conventional wisdom that high quality is an essential route to high profits. In this article Evan Davis shows that the truth is likely to be more complicated. The large profits that accrue to high quality producers are usually rewarding some inimitable production skill, or are reflecting the faith that customers have in the reputation of the producer to deliver a quality product in a market where quality is hard to monitor. For producers that do not have special skills, or who have no easy means of acquiring a reputation, the benefits of high quality positioning may not be great.

Notes: For those striving to create good companies it would at least be helpful to be able to identify them. While the very best companies usually perform well under any measure of corporate success, most conventional measures stack the odds in favour of certain companies over others. Capital intensity and gearing frequently interfere in the appropriate ranking of firms. This paper analyses some of the problems of commonly quoted performance indicators, and nominates an alternative.

Notes: Banks do not publish accounts in quite the same way as other companies, and nor should they. But they should not be immune to conventional standards of performance ranking and evaluation. This companion piece to Business Strategy Review articles on measuring company performance applies some performance benchmarking to a sample of European Banks. The result: they must do better.

Notes: For companies to create successful strategies, they need to identify success. Performance measurement and benchmarking are an important step towards good performance itself. But conventional profit measures do not provide a good benchmark. Using a profitability indicator which measures value created for shareholders, Business Strategy Review ranks the best performing companies in Europe, America and Japan. The message: if you want to be a successful company, move into the Pharmaceuticals sector.

Notes: In recent years, business has been heavily preoccupied with two themes: merger and acquisition activity, and the development of the Single European Market. The topic of this paper combines the two: Continental mergers. The authors argue that the costs and benefits of Continental mergers are different from those of their domestic counterparts, and they need to be handled in different ways. This has implications both for the form of integration and for the way in which it is implemented. Most important, it is relevant to the selection of the right partner.

Notes: British industry has had a turbulent decade, and it is hard to assess how far it has come over the 1980's. The BBC's Money Programme wanted to enlighten public debate on the subject, and commissioned London Business School researchers to furnish them with as much data as possible. This article catalogues the data and summarises many arguments of interpretation around it.
