Notes: The roles of composition and oxygen pressure in in situ growth of superconducting YBaCuO films have been studied. Anomalous results are observed at low oxygen pressure. Off-stoichiometric, Ba-deficient films have superior superconducting properties and more bulk-like crystal structure compared to films made on the 1:2:3 stoichiometry. Films made at low pressure have an expanded c axis compared to the bulk value, although their Tc's are only slightly depressed. Tc and c-axis lattice parameters are reported as a function of the deposition conditions.

Notes: Selective growth of GexSi1−x on Si is demonstrated for the first time using a pulsed laser induced epitaxy technique, combined with either standard oxide or liftoff patterning processes. Two different dimensions of Ge0.12Si0.88/Si lateral wells are formed, 3.5 μm wide by 1700 A(ring) deep, and 6 μm wide by 1300 A(ring) deep. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy, combined with energy-dispersive x-ray imaging, reveals a well-defined two-dimensional (2D) Ge redistribution profile with no significant line or surface defects observed. The 2D Ge well distribution profiles, governed by heat and mass transport during the laser processing, are discussed.

Notes: The CuYO2 delafossite-type structure has been identified as a second phase in thin films of Cu- and Y-rich YBa2Cu3O7−x (123) made by electron beam co-evaporation at conditions of low oxygen pressure; this phase occurs as extremely small, densely distributed, highly oriented precipitates within the 123 matrix. The smallest (sub-100 A(ring)) [00.1] oriented precipitates of this hexagonal phase are strained to give a better lattice match to the surrounding 123 structure. The results suggest that, for thin film deposition conditions of sufficiently low temperature and pressure, there may be a tie line between YBa2Cu3O7−x and CuYO2 in the equilibrium phase diagram. The size and distribution of the precipitates is such as would be expected to influence structurally sensitive superconducting transport properties.

Notes: Heteroepitaxial InxGa1−xAs/GaAs structures have been formed for the first time by pulsed laser induced mixing of molecular beam epitaxy deposited In films (∼200 A(ring)) on GaAs (100) substrates. The process occurs by a melt-induced, rapid-mixing and solidification process driven by a XeCl pulsed excimer laser. The laser has a 27 ns full width at half maximum pulse width at 308 nm with its energy density of 0.28–0.61 J cm−2 homogenized into a 4×4 mm square area which is stepped across the wafer. InxGa1−xAs layers with x values, as determined by both x-ray diffraction and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry simulation ranging from x=0.21–0.26 and thicknesses of 77–94 nm, have been formed. The formation of single-crystal layers has been verified by 4He ion channeling and cross-section transmission electron microscopy.

Notes: We have fabricated controlled grain boundaries between a- and c-axis films of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO). By selectively depositing c-axis and in-plane aligned a-axis YBCO on the same substrate, we have grown nominally 90° [010] basal-plane-faced tilt and twist grain boundaries (BFGB's and TGB's) on LaSrGaO4 (LSGO) substrates and have studied their transport. We find that the TGB is very robust, exhibiting high critical current density Jc and weak field dependence, and is as well coupled as our [010] antiphase boundaries. The BFGB is not as strong, but couples better than high-angle [001] tilt grain boundaries in c-axis films. Although the BFGB's do limit Jc, they do not reduce Jc by more than an order of magnitude and the field dependence is very weak. We discuss these grain boundaries in terms of weak links.

Notes: Summary A version of Cauchy's inequality is obtained which relates two matrices by an inequality in the sense of the Loewner ordering. In that ordering a symmetric idempotent matrix is dominated by the identity matrix and this fact yields a simple proof. A consequence of this matrix Cauchy inequality leads to a matrix version of the Kantorovich inequality, again in the sense of Loewner.

Notes: Abstract The lifetimes of the R-lines from the 2 E level and the broad bands from the 4 T 2 level of Cr3+ ions in various garnet crystals vary with the energy separation between the 2 E and 4 T 2 levels, which change systematically with the composition of host crystal. The trend of the Cr3+ lifetimes, as well as their temperature dependences in garnet crystals, is explained by zero-point vibration and phonon-assisted tunnelling between the 2 E and 4 T 2 states of Cr3+ ion.

Notes: Abstract Oral epithelia were isolated from Lobophyllia temprichii and Plerogyra sinuosa and placed in Ussing chambers. Calcium flux was measured under open circuit and short circuit conditions using 45Ca. Only a small transepithelial potential of 1.5 mV was recorded under open circuit conditions and no effect on flux rates were observed when the preparation was short circuited. Unidirectional fluxes in single and paired experiments were consistently greater in the ectoderm to gastroderm direction than from gastroderm to ectoderm with net flux of Ca2+ frequently being more than 3x10-4 μEq mm-2 min-1. A small number of paired experiments showed that net flux of Ca2+ was reduced by Sr2+ and sodium azide but not by dinitrophenol. Unidirectional fluxes from ectoderm to gastroderm appeared to have maxima in the early and late parts of the day when recorded between 0900 and 2100 hrs. It is concluded that active transport of Ca2+ occurs across the isolated oral epitheia and that this may be an initial step in the process of keletal Ca2+ deposition.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes measurements of the R-line emission from Cr3+ ions in Y3Ga5O12, Gd3Sc2Ga3O12, and Gd3Sc2Al3O12. Discrete splittings of the lines are interpreted as due to disorder on the cation sublattices. Assuming statistical distributions of the cations on the different cation sublattices enables estimates to be made of the degree of non-stoichiometry in the crystals.

Notes: Abstract The microstructure and transport properties of various 90° grain boundaries in (103) oriented YBa2Cu3O7(YBCO) thin films grown epitaxially in situ by 90° off-axis sputtering are compared. The (103) films grown on (101) LaAlO3 and (101) SrTiO3 substrates have specific sets of 90° grain boundaries in both principal in-plane directions: 90° [010] twist boundaries along the [101] direction, and 90° [010] symmetrical tilt boundaries and 90° [010] basal-plane-faced tilt boundaries along the (301) direction. No weak-link behavior is observed across some of these boundaries by transport critical current density and normalized magnetic field dependence of J c measurements along both those in-plane directions. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveals variations in the structure and microfaceting of the 90° boundaries, which may contribute to the absence of weak-link behavior. These results have important implications for understanding the behavior of step-edge Josephson junctions.
