Notes: Abstract One of the fundamental axioms of concurrent engineering is that undertaking functional design without foreseeing the manufacturing process leads to production delays and increased costs. This widely accepted concurrent engineering principle is given a formal basis by development of a mathematical model for the conversion of a feature-based design representation to a manufacturing representation. Within the domain of thin-walled components, it is shown that the conversion to tooling cost representations can result in a discontinuous function when the sets of design and manufacturing representations have been formulated as topological spaces. This discontinuity formally reflects the folklore that a small design change can significantly increase product cost. The mathematical sophistication required within this model is suggestive of why manufacturability evaluations can be quite difficult.

Notes: Abstract The stability of the chiral vacuum is explored in Coulomb gauge QCD, in the Breit frame. We find that perturbative Coulomb and transverse gluon exchange destabilises the chirally symmetric vacuum towards a chiral symmetry breaking solution.

Notes: Abstract Backward emitted protons with momentump〉0.3 GeV/c in interactions of neutrino in the energy range 10–200 GeV with photoemulsion nuclei were investigated. Energy spectrum slope parameter of backward protons was measured to beT 0=48.9±7.9 MeV. TheA-dependence power index of relative mean yield of backward protons was found to bea=0.68±0.12. A drop in the mean yield of backward protons at the four momentum squared over ∼15 (GeV/c)2 (the neutrino energy over ∼50 GeV) was observed.

Notes: Abstract Hunger is defined as the inability to obtain sufficient, nutritious, personally acceptable food through normal food channels or the uncertainty that one will be able to do so. After the depression of the 1930s, widespread concerns about hunger in Canada did not resurface until the recession of the early 1980s when the demand for food assistance rose dramatically. The development of an ad hoc charitable food distribution system ensued and by 1992, 2.1 million Canadians were receiving food assistance. In the absence of national monitoring systems, this remains the best available estimate of the prevalence of hunger. Hunger appears to be linked to poverty, unemployment, and numbers of people receiving social assistance. Although the Canadian social security system has traditionally been characterized by government-run universal and targeted programs designed to address income issues, hunger raises concerns about the current “safety net”. The primary response to hunger has been the proliferation of food banks, the agencies at the heart of the charitable food assistance system. On a smaller scale, community-based programs and advocacy initiatives have emerged. Nonetheless, the demand for food assistance continues to rise. The trend raises questions about future directions for social policy in Canada and concerns about the development of a two-tiered food distribution system—one for those with adequate money and one for the poor.

Notes: Abstract A computer program, LAVENT, is now available which computes the heating of fusible links due to the presence of a ceiling jet imbedded in an upper layer. An important new feature in this program is that the two-dimensional structure of the ceiling jet is taken into account such that the location of the link beneath the ceiling plays a role in the response of the link. The links can be used to activate ceiling vents such that the effect of venting the upper layer on the ceiling jet may be studied. Additional applications would include the study of upper layer containment through the use of a combination of draft curtains and ceiling vents. The geometry modeled by the program is that of a large compartment enclosed by a combination of walls and draft curtains.

Notes: Abstract The cactophilic species,Drosophila buzzatii, normally breeds in decaying pockets ofOpuntia cladodes, in which there is a complex interaction with the microbial flora, especially yeast species. Isofemale lines were used to estimate genetic variation among larvae reared on their natural feeding substrate. Four naturally occurring cactophilic yeast species isolated from the same Tunisian oasis as theDrosophila population were used. Two fitness components were studied for each line, viability and developmental time. Genetic variations amongD. buzzatii lines were observed for both traits. A significant yeast species x isofemale line interaction for viability was also evidenced, suggesting the occurrence of specialized genotypes for the utilization of breeding substrates. This genetic heterogeneity in the natural population may favor a better adaptation to the patchily distribution of yeasts.

Notes: Abstract The crystal structures of two tetracycline derivatives, 4-dedimethylaminotetracycline hydrate and 6-methylene-5-oxytetracycline hydrochloride (methacycline·HCl), were determined using X-ray intensity data measured on a diffractometer. The first compound crystallizes with two chemical formula and one water molecule per asymmetric unit. The monoclinic crystal [a=7.174(5),b=12.029(9),c=21.117(15) Å,β=93.16(6)°] shows the space groupP21. Crystals of methacycline hydrochloride are orthorhombic, space groupP212121,a=9.472(1),b=11.921(3),c=18.945(4)Å, with one molecule in the asymmetric unit.

Notes: Abstract The polysilylenes exhibit complex solid-state structures and electronic properties. In this report the solid-state conformational structures of symmetrically substituted poly(di-n-alkylsilylenes) are described. Comparisons between the different structures and their respective UV absorption characteristics demonstrate that the relationship is complex and aspects of molecular geometry beyond chain conformation must be considered. The thermochromic and piezochromic behavior of several of these polysilylenes is discussed. The all-trans conformation of the silicon backbone is associated with both phenomena. The properties of several polysilylene copolymers have also been investigated. We find that some of the copolymers form a well-ordered structure and exhibit absorption characteristics similar to the crystalline phases of the corresponding homopolymers.

Notes: Abstract The densities and the ultrasonic speeds of the aqueous solutions of 2-(2-hexyloxyethoxy)ethanol (C6E2) were measured over the entire range of mole fractions at 5°C. Excess molar volumes V E were readily calculated from the densities. The densities, in combination with the ultrasonic speeds, furnish estimates of the molar (and excess molar) isentropic compressibilities K S and the deviations u D of the ultrasonic speeds from the values calculated for ideal mixtures. Radical changes in the mole fraction derivatives of the excess molar properties of the (C6E2 + water) system, in the vicinity of an amphiphile mole fraction of 0.003, indicate that C6E2 like C6E3 is capable of micelle formation. Our data have been compared with those reported earlier for (C4E2 +, C2E2 +, and C6E3 + water). We have employed both mass action and pseudophase approaches to data analysis, together with the four-segment model approach.

Notes: Abstract The free energy of some models of aqueous bolaform electrolytes have been calculated at the Debye-Hückel limiting law plus B 2 level of approximation. The repulsive forces are modeled by hard spheres or hard ellipsoids. The charges are placed either at the center of the sphere or at the foci of the ellipsoid. Parameters were chosen to approximate the size and shape of sodium and calcium p-benzenedisufonate and sodium 4,4′-biphenyldisulfonate. The results show that contrary to the standard explanations for the unusual properties of bolaform electrolytes, separating the charges has little effect on the excess free energy. It is also shown that changing from a sphere to an ellipse has little effect on the excess free energy. The most important determinates of the properties of these salts are the sizes of the ions. Agreement of the model calculations with experimental results is reasonable considering the simplicity of the models.
