Notes: Isomerization of octahedral complexes XY6, by a mechanism known as diagonal twist (in which two ligands in cis positions, one to another, exchange sites) is considered. Construction of the corresponding isomerization graph is outlined (reported before by Balaban) and the problem of determining its symmetry is considered. Alternative routes for deducing the order of the automorphism group are described. The group is confirmed to be S6 and representative symmetry permutations (one for each of the 11 classes of S6) are shown. Alternative pictorial representations of the 15-vertex graph are also shown.

Notes: Univariate minimization is considered for constrained optimization with the Kavlie-Moe extended interior penalty. An algorithm is derived using a linear-plus-hyperbolic fit suggested by R. L. Fox for interior penalties. A linear extension to the linear-plus-hyperbolic permits rapid convergence with extended interior alties. However, constraint deletion and approximation of remaining constraints before each minimization also characterize the environment. These and other complexities impede accurate fitting of larger intervals. Thus, following Murray, a mixed strategy is adopted with function comparison reductions of interval size to supplement curve fitting.Analysis shows how quadratic and cubic fit searches break down under certain limiting conditions of interior, extended and exterior penalties. A quadratic-extended linear curve derived for exterior penalties and the linear-plus-hyperbolic similarly fail on extended interior penalties. Examples of constrained optimization with extended interior penalties were run on the Stanford IBM 370/168 computer. A stiffened two-panel box provides eight optimization variables with many constraints on demensions and against failure. The extended linear-plus-hyperbolic surpasses cubic and linear-plus hyperbolic fitting, especially when the Fiacco-McCormick multiplier for the penalty becomes small. The value of feedback from curve fitting to decide function comparison use is also illustrated.

Notes: Both ab initio and semiempirical electronic structure calculations are used to investigate the molecular and electronic structures and eneregetic stabilities of an unusual bridged compound with the general formula [Y—SiH3—X—SiH3—Y]-, with Y = H or F and X = H, CH3, NH2, OH, F, or Cl. Most of these bridged anions are quite stable relative to YSiH3 + XSiH3Y-, and the stability is predicted to increase considerably when Y = H is replaced with Y = F.

Notes: A numerical study of three-dimensional natural convection with phase change in a rectangular parallelepiped is described. The fluid has temperature-dependent variable properties. The governing equations are approximated by finite differences, second order in space and first order in time. A boundary-fitted co-ordinate system is implemented to predict the shape and the movement of the solid-liquid interface. Preliminary results have been obtained for freezing of water in a cube for Rayleigh numbers in the range of about 105-106.

Notes: The solution of the stream function-vorticity equations is developed using a multigrid method to improve efficiency in a finite-element p-method. The equations are discretized using 2-D Lagrange finite elements (linear, quadratic and cubic) and solved in iteratively decoupled form using successive approximation and continuation methods. The comparative performance of several multigrid and direct matrix solvers is investigated with respect to convergence characteristics and time performance on the Cray Y-MP.

Notes: Using the Haskell-Thomson transfer matrix approach, an analytical solution is obtained for SH wave amplification by multiple layers of Gibson soils (i.e. viscoelastic layers with linearly varying shear moduli). Amplification spectra for typical soil and basement rock properties are calculated. A comparison of the Gibson soil response with that obtained for homogeneous soil models shows generally stronger amplifications associated with the Gibson soil.

Notes: An analytical solution for rapid (undrained) expansion of a long cylindrical cavity from initially zero radius is presented. A simple rate-type soil model possessing the salient features of the modified Cambridge critical state model is used. Application of the solution to determination of the stress field surrounding a pile immediately after driving is discussed.
