    Notes: Abstract A computer program, LAVENT, is now available which computes the heating of fusible links due to the presence of a ceiling jet imbedded in an upper layer. An important new feature in this program is that the two-dimensional structure of the ceiling jet is taken into account such that the location of the link beneath the ceiling plays a role in the response of the link. The links can be used to activate ceiling vents such that the effect of venting the upper layer on the ceiling jet may be studied. Additional applications would include the study of upper layer containment through the use of a combination of draft curtains and ceiling vents. The geometry modeled by the program is that of a large compartment enclosed by a combination of walls and draft curtains.

    Notes: Abstract This study was designed to examine the relationship between actual and perceived values of cost and time for the work trip and to examine how perceptions have changed over a period of dramatically increased travel costs. Variations in the relationship between perceived and actual values were examined as a function of situational and attitudinal variables. Two telephone surveys were conducted one year apart (Fall 1978 and Fall 1979). On the next working day following a survey, a research assistant recreated the respondent's work trip, recorded time values and used distance measures, car type information and parking costs to compute travel cost. The first survey revealed that most auto users were unable to articulate dollars-and-cents driving costs for the work trip, but auto users in the second survey were able to provide fairly accurate cost estimates. Dramatic changes in fuel prices between surveys is probably the main reason for the change in driving cost awareness. Auto users were also asked to rate relative costs of driving a car compared to using the bus for the work trip. These ratings showed that auto users tended to underestimate driving costs relative to bus costs, but this tendency decreased from the first to the second time period. Commuters in all modal groups at both time periods tended to overestimate travel times. Perception of travel time varied as a function of mode, perceived comfort (for car users), and perceived convenience and number of transfers (for bus users).

    Notes: Abstract This paper analyzes trip chaining, focusing on how households organize non-work travel. A trip chaining typology is developed using household survey data from Portland, Oregon. Households are organized according to demographic structure, allowing analysis of trip chaining differences among household types. A logit model of the propensity to link non-work trips to the work commute is estimated. A more general model of household allocation of non-work travel among three alternative chain types — work commutes, multi-stop non-work journeys, and unlinked trips — is also developed and estimated. Empirical results indicate that the likelihood of linking work and non-work travel, and the more general organization of non-work travel, varies with respect to household structure and other factors which previous studies have found to be important. The effects of two congestion indicators on trip chaining were mixed: workers who commuted in peak periods were found to have lower propensity to form work/non-work chains, while a more general congestion indicator had no effect on the allocation of non-work trips among alternative chains.

    Notes: Abstract The standard Leontief input-output approach to estimating the impacts resulting from changes in final demands is inappropriate to apply to cases in which the gross outputs of particular sectors of the economy are constrained because of conditions such as strikes or natural disasters. In this paper two alternative approaches are presented for estimating the impacts on production resulting from supply-constraints. The first is based on standard interindustry purchase coefficients, the second on sales coefficients. Each model is applied in turn to estimate the impact on the Kern County, California economy of a hypothetical curtailment of State-supplied water to the County's agricultural activities. The empirical results, as well as the underlying assumptions, of each approach are compared and discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Employment multipliers for the metropolitan economy of Vancouver are derived from both economic base and input-out-put models of the region. The principal shortcomings of the location quotient approach in delineating the economic base of a region are reviewed, and empirical estimates are made of the understatement of exports resulting from this approach in light of survey data. The survey data and the author's judgment are then employed to yield a base employment multiplier of 1.99 for the region. Sectoral input-output employment multipliers are presented and conditions are derived under which an aggregated I-O multiplier is equal to the multiplier associated with the economic base model.

    Notes: Abstract The alleged benefits of municipal public land banking are discussed in the context of the following issues: 1) lower housing costs through lower land prices; 2) the elimination of private speculation in land on the urban fringe; and 3) more effective planning of future urban expansion. The arguments presented are illustrated with examples from the Canadian experience. It is concluded that the present case for municipal public land banks as an alternative to existing planning controls is not a convincing one.
