Notes: We have constructed a model for the occurrence of foreshocks and foreshock sequences. The foreshocks as well as the main shock are assumed to occur because of the abrupt coalescence of pre-existing cracks. Coalescence occurs if the stress intensity factors at the crack tips exceed a certain critical value. In the sub-critical state each crack undergoes accelerated extension quasi-statically due to stress corrosion, until it reaches the critical state, at which point growth becomes catastrophic. The rate of foreshock occurrence increases as the time of the main shock approaches and is described by a power law function of time. The exponent in the power law is independent of the distributions of crack sizes, spacings and fracture strengths. This universality implies that foreshock patterns should be useful identifiers for the prediction of the occurrence times of large earthquakes. However, we find that there is considerable diversity in the patterns of energy release. Nevertheless, there is some hope that the magnitudes of large earthquakes can be predicted from the magnitudes of the events in the foreshock sequences if one has a priori information describing the distributions of barrier strengths and geometries.

Notes: [Auszug] STRONG earthquakes hold such terror for unprotected populations that those capable of forecasting earthquakes with any degree of reliability whatsoever, have a ready and appreciative audience. Thus, earthquake prediction has been the business of psychics and astrologers for centuries. The unhappy ...

Notes: [Auszug] WOOD AND ALLEN1 have suggested that seismicity on a portion of the San Andreas Fault can be used in support of a model of recurring migration of epicentres. They considered 27 earthquakes of magnitude, M ^ 5 within 30 km of the fault between 35.5N and 38.5N which occurred between 1930 and 1972. ...

Notes: Abstract This paper will summarise the present state of knowledge concerning the elastic and dissipative properties of composite materials in the long wavelength or static approximation. In this case the material, although containing numerous inclusions or cracks or other types of microstructure, can be regarded as a continuum. Established results are listed for the elastic parameters following a review of approximate and exact methods of their derivation.

Notes: Abstract Rayleigh wave dispersion measurements across East Antarctica give high phase velocities to periods as long as 75 sec. These are characteristic of the other Precambrian shields of the world.

Notes: Summary Ductile deformation prior to brittle fracture in rocks causes fracture to take place with a time delay after the critical stress for fracture is reached, in the presence of an increasing load stress. We discuss the stability of a stochastic model of interactive earthquake occurrence under the influence of time delays resulting from the ductile process. A threshold for oscillatory behavior is found for large enough coupling and discrete time delays. The system is stable if the time delays are spread over a broad time interval, even for large coupling.

Description: Discretization of the wave operator for purposes of solving problems in the dynamics of crack growth numerically, introduces noncausality associated with the nonlinearity of the fracture criterion at the edge of the crack, i.e. with an imperfect formulation of the fracture criterion in the discretized case. The noncausality can be attributed to jumps from one inertial coordinate system to another as successive particles at the edge of a digitized crack are triggered into motion. It is shown that there is an equivalent explanation in terms of the incompatibility of the short-range edge conditions and the long-range correlations of slip on the crack in the discretized case. The noncausal effects can lead to supersonic crack growth, and in some cases to infinite crack growth velocities. A proposal for amelioration of the problem is offered.
