Notes: Excitation of large-amplitude Alfvén waves in an anisotropic electron–positron plasma is investigated with a two-and-one-half-dimensional (2〈fraction SHAPE="CASE"〉12-D), electromagnetic particle code. If the plasma distribution is a bi-Maxwellian with T⊥/T(parallel)〉1, where the subscript symbols denote directions perpendicular and parallel to the ambient magnetic field, Alfvén waves with arbitrary polarization are generated. Simulations show that the amplitude of the waves increases both with increasing temperature anisotropy and parallel plasma β(parallel). The stabilization of individual wave modes occurs sequentially, from higher values of wave number down to lower ones, in the evolution of the temperature anisotropy instability. Wave–particle scattering by the enhanced waves maintains the initially bi-Maxwellian character throughout the simulation, even as it reduces T⊥ and increases T(parallel). After saturation of wave magnetic energy a large residual temperature anisotropy still remains and persists through the end of the simulation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The behavior of particles under thermophoretic effect was examined experimentally by getting rid of the effect of natural convection utilizing microgravity environment. The microgravity environment was realized by using a drop tower facility. In this system, measurement fields with temperature gradient were established between two metal plates. In order to provide a steep temperature gradient within a limited experimental duration, the preheated metal plate was forced to approach the cold plate quickly after the microgravity environment was established. Temperature distribution and the behavior of individual particles were observed simultaneously. The fields in an almost steady state with monotonic temperature gradient were obtained. In these fields, no other forces than thermophoretic force which might induce the particles movement were confirmed to exist. The fields ideal for the measurement of the thermophoretic effect were obtained in our experiments. The measured thermophoretic velocities were found to be higher than the corresponding one estimated from previously proposed theoretical equations; coefficients included in which were determined on the basis of experimental data obtained using a less accurate method. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] Ubiquitin-like proteins (UBLs) are conjugated by dynamic E1–E2–E3 enzyme cascades. E1 enzymes activate UBLs by catalysing UBL carboxy-terminal adenylation, forming a covalent E1˜UBL thioester intermediate, and generating a thioester-linked E2˜UBL product, which must be ...

Notes: The complete nucleotide sequence of plasmid pLA106 (2862 bp) from Lactobacillus acidophilus TK8912 was determined. Based on this sequence, the location of the genes for mobilization-plasmid recombination protein (mob), replication origin (ori), transcriptional repressor protein (repA) and replication initiation protein (repB) were predicted. Deletion analysis showed that the 1.4-kb PstI–EcoRV fragment carrying the ori, repA and repB genes is able to replicate in Lactobacillus and Escherichia coli cells. The plasmid pLA106 appears to have most features of the pLS1/pE194 plasmid family.

Notes: An adaptive loading system is developed to examine a design point of multi-story steeltest frames subjected to uncertain load pattern. Lateral loads are given as a random combination ofbasic load patterns, and the system drives a test frame to the most likely failure situation. Two-storysteel moment resisting frames are tested considering a failure mechanism formation of plasticcollapse as a tentative limit state. A random 2-dof lateral force is given by a random combination oftwo basic load patterns, which are arranged to represent elastic earthquake load effects. Hybriddesign point search or adaptive loading tests on the 2-story frame are performed, and the detectedlikely failure mechanisms are compared with the results of pseudo-dynamic response tests todeterministic excitations

Notes: Effectiveness of steel bracing system installed with fully mechanical interfaces isexperimentally demonstrated through a series of monotonic and cyclic loading tests. Also, substructuring pseudo-dynamic earthquake response tests are performed on a possible situation of a two-story braced frame upgraded by the proposed bracing system. An earthquake record and theoretical impulses are adopted as input excitations. The results show that an impulsive excitation acts more stringently on the occurrence of brace breaking

Notes: Abstract Amplification process in an excimer laser of dense modes is studied. Rate-equations with wavelength dependence are used to reproduce its spectra. Two extreme cases are tried and in spite of the duration of the output pulse relative to the relaxation time, the short pulse limit is proved to describe well the oscillation process of individual mode.
