    Notes: Effects of feed ration levels (RLs) and age on sensory characteristics, fillet lipid content (LC) and fatty acid composition (FA) of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), fillet were investigated in a longitudinal feeding experiment. Daily RLs were administered as a percentage of the ration size necessary for expected maximum growth (RL100). Fish on RL50, RL75, RL100 and RL200 were sampled at 1.4, 2.0 and 2.4 years of age. Analyses of LC and FA were carried out on a fillet cross-section. Sensory analyses were performed by an expert panel using ranking and conventional profiling. RL had no effect on the intensity of fresh smell or any sensory characteristic of taste or consistency of fish on RLs over 75%, irrespective of age; fish on RL50, however, scored significantly lower for fresh taste and firmness. Age had no effect on the intensity of total taste, whereas fresh taste increased and rancidity decreased with increasing age irrespective of RL. LC related strongly to RL and age, and increased up to 2.0 years of age. An increase in LC resulted in a higher level of monounsaturated FA and a lower level of polyunsaturated FA. A restriction to RL75 had no negative effects on sensory characteristics, LC or FA of the fillet.

    Notes: Abstract Temperature changes in polymeric composite laminates subjected to uniaxial monotonic tensile loading were studied. The laminates were transverse and longitudinal unidirectional glass fibre–epoxy and carbon fibre–epoxy laminates, and hybrid crossply laminates with longitudinal glass fibre–epoxy and transverse carbon fibre–epoxy layers. The temperature decreased linearly with increased tensile stress in the elastic region, except for longitudinal carbon fibre specimens (where the fibres have a small but negative coefficient of thermal expansion), which exhibited a small temperature increase. The occurrence of non-linear stress–strain behaviour in transverse carbon fibre specimens altered the rate of temperature change. When cracks appeared in laminates, the temperature immediately started to rise. The temperature changes in crossply laminates were interpreted from measurements on unidirectional specimens and knowledge of the damage mechanisms.

    Notes: Abstract The tensile strain to failure of small wood samples is a desirable property in studies where the effect of small differences in microstructure on failure is of interest. However, the scatter in data is usually significant and only one data is obtained per specimen. For this reason, a new multiple fracture test for measurement of the strain to failure distribution was designed. Wood samples were bonded between two transparent PVC layers with higher strain to failure than the wood. Multiple fractures were then observed in single wood samples during tensile loading. This behavior is already utilized in tests in the field of synthetic composite materials. It was possible to conveniently register multiple fracture events as a function of strain by visual observation through the transparent PVC layers. The data were used to compare two different wood materials and to determine their Weibull distribution functions.

Microtomed specimens of isolated and combined early-and latewood, in green and oven-dried/resoaked state were loaded to failure in uniaxial tension parallel to the grain. The fracture surfaces were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both green early- and latewood samples showed rough fracture surfaces, which in latewood was dominated by intrawall failure. In the resoaked state, transwall failure dominated and fracture surfaces were more flat, indicating a more brittle fracture process. Although variation in the data was large, the strength of the resoaked samples were generally lower than those of paired green samples. The observations support irreversible cell wall damage formed during drying which severely affects the failure mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract Failure criteria for polymers need to include effects from the stress state. For this reason, biaxial test results are of interest. However, biaxial test methods usually require expensive equipment. In the test method presented here, a disk of epoxy is bonded between a steel ring and a steel disk. The temperature is then lowered until fracture is observed. Experiments were performed on three different glassy epoxy polymers. The biaxial stress state was analyzed by finite element analysis and by an approximate analytical model. Experimental observations support the ability of the method to provide material property data. An approximate analytical model was found sufficiently accurate for stress analysis and determination of the stress state at failure.
