    Notes: Abstract  The native soils of Galicia (NW Spain) exhibit a biochemical equilibrium such that total soil N is a function of five biochemical and microbiological parameters: microbial biomass C, mineralized N, phosphomonoesterase, β-glucosidase and urease activities. To investigate whether the ratio of the total N calculated from biochemical soil properties (Nc) and the total N as measured by the Kjeldahl method (Nk; Nc/Nk) can be used as an index of soil quality, we determined these variables and consequently the ratio in three kinds of disturbed soils: an artificially Cu-contaminated soil, two lignite mine soils, and a number of arable soils. In none of the studied soils did the individual biochemical parameters respond consistently to the factors influencing soil quality, but in all cases soil degradation was reflected by the Nc/Nk value, which differed more or less markedly from 100%. Nc/Nk can therefore be used for the rapid evaluation of soil degradation, since it distinguishes among biochemically balanced soils, soils in a transient state of high microbiological and biochemical activity and degraded soils. It can also serve as a reliable basis for the rapid calculation of the "ecological dose" (ED50) of soil pollutants. The use of Nc/Nk as an objective index of the biochemical quality of soils is recommended.

    Notes: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to monitor exposure to lead in four species of raptors in Southeastern Spain (Murcia Region). Samples of liver, kidney, brain, blood, and bone from two species of diurnal raptors (European kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) and European buzzard (Buteo buteo)) and two species of nocturnal raptors (Eagle owl (Bubo bubo) and Little owl (Athene noctua)) were obtained during 1994. Relationships were found between size and age of the birds, the nearness to areas of human activity and lead concentrations in tissues. The lead distribution pattern reveals that the bone is the principle organ for accumulation (0.62–43 mg/Kg, dry weight), followed by the kidney (0.03–0.66 mg/Kg, wet weight), and liver (0.017–0.05 mg/Kg, w.w.), and to lesser extent, the brain (0.013–0.223 mg/Kg, w.w.). This distribution pattern indicates that raptors in Southeastern Spain were exposed to environmental low lead levels continuously over an extended period of time. Correlations between lead in bone and lead in soft tissues were higher in European buzzards (r = 0.87–0.95) and Eagle owl (r = 0.71–0.86) than those found in European kestrels (r = 0.53–0.58) and Little owls (r 〈 0). However, correlations between lead concentrations in soft tissues and in blood were high (r = 0.85–0.99).

    Notes: Abstract. The principal aim of this study is to establish the kinetic behavior of cadmium by determining the concentrations of this element in the blood and in different tissues of wild birds exposed to environmental cadmium. We have studied a total of 118 birds living in the southeast of Spain, a zone with a Mediterranean climate and stopover point for important migratory species. The distribution pattern followed by the cadmium in our samples reveals that the kidney is the primary organ for accumulation, followed by the liver and, to lesser extent, the brain and bone. Low concentrations were found in the tissues and in the blood. The study of correlations between the different tissues and blood suggests a compartmental behavior of cadmium under these exposure conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Glutamine-synthetase (GS; EC 6.3.1.2) activity and protein levels were measured in crude extracts from Monoraphidium braunii Näegeli, strain 202-7d, cultures grown under different nitrogen sources. Only ammonium and l-glutamine promoted a partial enzyme inactivation, which, in the case of l-glutamine, was accompanied by a significant repression of GS. Methionine sulfoximine (MSX), a strong inhibitor of GS, produced a drastic inactivation of GS which was concomitant with a marked increase in GS protein as measured by rocket immunoelectrophoresis. Such an increase was prevented in the presence of cycloheximide. The effect of the l-glutamine analog on GS activity and protein was partially inhibited if l-glutamine was also added to cell cultures, possibly indicating competition in the transport of these two substances. In addition, the effects of MSX were reversed after longer times when cultures were treated with smaller concentrations of inhibitor. Treatment of cell cultures with azaserine, a specific inhibitor of glutamate synthase, the second enzyme acting in the ammonium assimilation pathway, promoted a strong GS inactivation and a partial repression of this enzyme, which paralleled a specific increase in the intracellular pools of glutamine High-performance liquid chromatography measurements of intracellular amino-acid concentrations showed that glutamine levels correlated negatively with GS concentration. A role for glutamine as a negative effector of GS synthesis is proposed.

    Notes: Abstract. Photoreceptor degeneration in the retina of the rd/rd (retinal degeneration) mice has been studied using immunocytochemistry with antisera against cone- and rod-opsin. The rd/rd mice exhibited different regional specific rates of degeneration for rods and cones. As early as postnatal day 25, cells labelled with the rod-opsin and cone-opsin antisera disappeared preferently from the central retina. Whereas in the inferior half of the retina, degeneration subsequently proceeded towards the periphery, this did not occur in the dorsal hemisphere. By the age of 100 days, many cells immunoreactive for the cone-opsin antiserum and a few cells immunoreactive for the rod-opsin antiserum were located in an area of the dorsal retina. The ventral retina lacked labelled elements at this age. Finally, rd/rd mice at one year or 600 days of age contained a similar number of cone-opsin immunopositive cells (approximately 2000–2800 cells), occupying almost the same area in the retina as that found at 100 days of age. A photoreceptor candidate for the entrainment of non-visual photoreception probably remains in the cone population in aged rd/rd mice.

The extraretinal and extrapineal photoreceptors of three species of adult lamprey, sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), river lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis) and silver lamprey (Ichthyomyzon unicuspis) were studied using antibodies raised against photoreceptor rod and cone opsins, α-transducin and arrestin. In all three species cells in the pineal organ (P), parapineal organ (PP), nucleus preopticus (T5), nucleus commissurae postopticae (D8), nucleus ventralis hypothalami (D10) and nucleus dorsalis hypothalami (D11) were labelled by one or more of the anti-opsin antibodies. In addition, anti-arrestin antibodies labelled cells within the D8 and anti-α-transducin antibodies labelled cells within the pineal complex and hypothalamus (primarily D8 and/or D10). A more variable and species dependent pattern of opsin, arrestin and α-transducin labelling was observed within the nucleus commissurae postinfundibularis (D12) in an area comprising the nucleus dorsalis thalami pars subhabenularis (D4sh) and nucleus dorsalis thalami pars caudalis/nucleus commissurae posterioris (D4c/M1), and in the proximity of the second Müller cells in the ventrocaudal diencephalon (2.MZ/M6). The majority of the neurons labelled within the pineal and parapineal organs and hypothalamus were periventricular with clear cerebrospinal fluid contacts (CSF-contacting neurons). Labelled neurons in the epithalamic (D4sh and D4c/M1) and caudal diencephalon (2.MZ/M6) had no obvious ventricular contacts. We speculate that the ”primitive” vertebrate brain of lampreys represents an ancestral condition in which different populations of encephalic photoreceptors are associated with different behavioural and physiological responses. Image-forming vision needs an eye, but irradiance detection does not require a specialised organ. Rather the photoreceptors could be closely associated with their effector systems within the brain.
