    Notes: After 10 years of evaluation in different locations with high levels of incidence of disease, a group of sugarcane somaclones derived from callus tissues was selected for eyespot resistance. Resistance evaluations of four somaclones were performed under field and laboratory conditions. The results confirmed the superiority of two somaclones, one resistant and one tolerant to eyespot disease. Restriction analysis of mitochondrial DN A revealed that the two somaclones had a different DNA organization which distinguished them both from each other and from the donor plant; the restriction profile was similar however to that of the resistant control done. Restriction patterns of a third somaclone, also resistant, were similar to those of the donor plant. Differences among the somaclones were also evident when using a maize ribosomal DNA probe.

    Notes: The use of the fluorescent visible implant elastomer (VIE) tagging system in juvenile gilthead seabream, Sparus auratus L., between 7 and 18 g was examined. Four different colours (red, green, orange and yellow), three body positions (dorsal, lateral and caudal) and two orientations (horizontal and vertical) were tested. The mean tag application time for each fish was 15.7±0.32 s. There was no mortality associated with the method of tagging. The most visible tag colour was red. Injection orientation had a significant effect on length, width, fragmentation and fluorescent intensity of the tag. Horizontal tagging is recommended because of high fluorescent intensity, low fragmentation and for double tagging. There were no differences in growth between untagged controls and the VIE-tagged fish.

    Notes: Sixteen low-sugar peach nectar samples were prepared with 60% fruit, 0.082 to 0.922 g/L aspartame and 0 to 4.0 g/L guar gum, following a two-factor central composite rotatable design. The formulation containing 0.6 g/L aspartame and 0.6 g/L guar gum was selected by Response Surface Methodology. Chemical composition, calorie content, rheological behavior and acceptability of the selected sample, the control sample with added sucrose and of both low-calorie and regular commercial nectars were compared. Acceptability data were analyzed by ANOVA, signal to noise ratio and Internal Preference Mapping. Acceptability of the selected sample did not differ from that of the control sample nor from some commercial nectars.

    Notes: Two feeding experiments were conducted to evaluate the suitability of two commercial microdiets as a complementary food for the rearing of larval gilthead seabream Sparus aurata. The effect of these diets on growth, survival and total lipid composition, as well as the histological structure of the liver were examined. The results of the first trial highlighted water quality as an important factor for the survival of microdiet-fed larvae. An increase in water flow rate improved larval survival despite a reduction in live food supply. An effect of tank design on larval growth and survival was observed also and seems to be related with the light level inside the tanks; wider light grey tanks gave better results than narrower black ones. Microdiet feeding significantly improved larval growth and increased hepatocyte diameter and presence of PAS positive vacuoles suggesting an increased glycogen storage in comparison with that of larvae fed live prey only. Artificial diets provided the larvae with a higher amount of lipids and polyunsaturated fatty acids of the n-3 series, resulting in a higher DHA content in the total lipid of the larvae fed on microdiets.

    Notes: Purpose - While a vast number of studies have pointed out the keys of relationship marketing practices in consumer markets, little attention has been paid to the value the organization can get from such strategies. The literature provides relatively little support for the effectiveness of relationship marketing programs. The purpose of this research is to produce some evidence of the association between customer relationship marketing strategies and the market and economic performance of the firm. Design/methodology/approach - The proposed hypotheses are tested in the case of car repair and maintenance services, as a case where long-term relationships are frequent. The hypotheses were evaluated using a path analysis, which associates relationship marketing activities with market performance (customers' perceptions, market position and loyalty) and market performance with economic performance. Findings - The findings suggest that the effect of attraction and loyalty programs is greater on market performance than on economic performance. Furthermore, the results show that attracting customers through a good service quality and reaching a good position in the market have greater impact on economic results than loyalty. Practical implications - As a managerial implication, the authors suggest that service providers should put their efforts on improving quality rather than on promotion, advertising or economic bonus to customers. Originality/value - This article realizes the importance of product and service quality rather than promotions, advertising or economic bonuses in retaining customer loyalty.

    Notes: Feeding of marine fish larvae is, in most cases, limited to the administration of two species of live prey. This reduction in the range of food available for the cultured larvae may occasionally lead to nutritional imbalances or deficiencies. A large amount of research has been recently devoted to the study of the essential fatty acid requirements of marine fish larvae.Studies on the biochemical composition of developing eggs and larvae, as well as the comparison of the patterns of loss and conservation during starvation, pointed out the importance of n-3 HUFA and arachidonic acid as essential fatty acids for larvae of marine fish.The biochemical composition of marine fish larvae, in terms of lipid content and fatty acid composition of total and polar lipids, is modified by dietary levels of essential fatty acids. Larval growth, survival and activity have also been reported to be affected by dietary levels of essential fatty acids. In addition, some pathological signs, such as hydrops or abnormal pigmentation, have been related to essential fatty acid deficiency in these fish. Based on these effects, the essential fatty acid requirements of marine larval fish have been reported to range between 0.3 and 55 g kg−1 n-3 HUFA on a dry weight basis, suggesting that quantitative requirements of fish larvae may differ from those of juveniles or adults. But quantitative requirements for larvae of the same species reported by various authors are often contradictory. These differences are discussed in relation to the dietary lipid content, ratio 20:5n-3/22:6n-3 and culture conditions used.

    Notes: Abstract The spatial and temporal effects of the pyrethroid insecticide, deltamethrin, on populations of cereal aphids and their primary parasitoids and hyperparasitoids were investigated in a large scale field experiment in winter wheat. Four hectare plots were treated at the recommended field concentration or a reduced concentration representing one twentieth of field rate. A control plot was left unsprayed. Invertebrate populations were sampled at sites within a grid layout covering the whole plots, enabling the use of geostatistical analysis. Hymenopteran populations were monitored using transparent sticky traps and suction sampling. Aphid populations were recorded by visual counts. Monitoring continued for 36 days after treatment. The full rate deltamethrin treatment resulted in initial reductions of aphid populations by 78%. Primary parasitoid and hyperparasitoid populations were reduced in suction samples by 90% and 47% respectively, when corrected for control fluctuations. The reduced deltamethrin concentration caused reductions of aphid, primary parasitoid and hyperparasitoid populations of 40, 60 and 54% respectively. Aphid population recovery over the full rate plot occurred slowly and in a ‘patchy’ manner following treatment. No significant reinvasion gradients were detected. Aphid population density recovered more rapidly in the reduced rate treatment; with initial evidence for increased densities at the plot centre. Significant patterns of reinvasion were initially detected for both groups of Hymenoptera in the full rate treatment, suggesting that reinvasion of the sprayed area was taking place from untreated surrounding reservoirs. It was concluded that experiments that examine pesticide impacts within small plots will lead to underestimates of effects on dispersive groups including parasitic Hymenoptera.

    Notes: Abstract Let X be a Riemann surface of genus g≥2. A symmetry of σ of X is an antiholomorphic involution acting of X. A classical theorem of Harnack states that the set Fix (σ) of fixed points of σ is either emplty or it consists of ‖σ‖≤ g+1 disjoint simple closed curves called, following Hilbert′s terminology, the ovals of σ. A Riemann surface admitting a symmetry corresponds to a real algebraic curve and nonconjugate symmetries correspond to different real models of the curve. The number of ovals of the symmetry equals the number of connected components of the corresponding real model. It is well known that two symmetries of a Riemann surface of genus g have at most 2g+2 ovals, and the bound is attained for every genus and just for commuting symmetries. Natanzon showed that three and four nonconjugate symmetries of a Riemann surface of genus g have at most 2g+4 and 2g+8 ovals respectively, and these bounds are attained for every odd genus and for commuting symmetries. Natanzon found that a Riemann surface of genus g has at most 2( $$\sqrt g$$ +1) nonconjugate symmetries and, again, this bound is attained for infinitely many of g. Recently we have showed that a Riemann surface of even genus g admits at most four symmetries. Our aim here is to show, using NEC groups and combinatorial methods, that three nonconjugate symmetries of a surface of even genus g has at most 2g+3 ovals and, surprisingly, if such a surface admits four nonconjugate symmetries then its total number of ovals does not exceed 2g+2. Furthermore, we show that this last bound is sharp for every even genus g and for surfaces with automorphism group D n × Z2, for each n dividing 2g.
