    Notes: The earliest quantitative chemical analysis of ground water from the United States was probably made during 1807. The largest number of early analyses were of water from various mineral springs in and near the towns of Ballston and Saratoga Springs, New York. Although most of the scientific and economic interest at the time centered on the reported health benefits from the water, some of the earliest reports describing the springs contained rudimentary yet scientifically based hydrogeochemical explanations for the dissolved constitutents in the water. One motivation for the early analytical work was the desire to concoct a dry mixture of chemicals that would duplicate the mineral water when mixed with ordinary drinking water. The use of a powder would simplify distribution and bypass dealing with owners of the springs. Early analyses of water from Congress Spring published by different individuals between 1817 and 1856 are similar, and if allowance is made for minor temporal changes in quality, the results would be considered useful even by modern standards.

    Notes: Microwave oven heating rates of various oil-in-water emulsions, water-in-oil emulsions, and layered systems were compared. Emulsions heated faster than corresponding layered systems, which heated faster than a calculated weighted average of individual components. Differences were attributed to increased power absorption caused by the large number of interfaces occurring in emulsions, or by a single interface in the layered system, and by resonant absorption of microwave radiation, which is determined by dielectric properties. The types and proportions of emulsions determined the number of interfaces. The dielectric properties and sample size determined in which samples resonant absorption occurred.

    Notes: Slabs of agar gel were heated in a microwave oven. Temperatures were measured at various depths into the sample to experimentally determine the internal temperature profile. These were compared to power and temperature profiles predicted from Lambert's law, Maxwell's field equations and a Combined equation. Lambert's law and the Combined equation predicted a much slower heating rate than found experimentally, while Maxwell's field equations gave a much more accurate prediction. Because of the internal standing waves that are created, a small variation in sample thickness could make a large difference in heating rate for thin samples.

    Notes: Due to increasing global competition, the issue ofcountry-of-origin has received a great deal of attention recently.Examines country-of-origin image stereotyping by businesspeople in theGulf States of the Middle East. Assesses the attitude of businesspeopletoward various products of seven countries: the USA, Japan, Germany,England, France, Italy and Taiwan, that are the most active in the GulfStates. To develop effective global marketing strategies, firms requiredecisionmaking support in the form of information about the perceptionof their products in the international markets. The study found thatcountry-of-origin stereotyping is present in the Gulf States market. Thestudy provided evidence that "Made in the USA, Japan, andGermany" clearly emerged as most favoured countries of origin. Inaddition, the image of English products trailed behind products fromother European countries except Italy. Profile differences were analyzedstatistically. Age, education, sex, and income level were variouslyrelated to consumers' attitudes to products made in different countries.

    Notes: Saraph et al. systematically attempted to organize andsynthesize the various perceptions offered by other authors on thecritical factors of quality management. The authors provided a synthesisof the quality literature by identifying eight critical factors ofquality management in a business unit. They stated that the measureswere both valid and reliable. In the light of this, empirically teststheir resulting instrument to a greater extent and from an internationalperspective. The instrument of the operational measures of the developedfactors is tested for reliability and validity using data collected from424 general managers and quality managers in the United Arab Emirates.Results provide strong evidence that the measures are judged to be bothvalid and reliable. The empirical replication on a more broadly basedsample provides further corroboration of Saraph et al.'sresults. Examines the level of practice of factors of quality managementin the UAE. Suggests that better use of the instrument is accomplishedwhen it is used jointly with other instruments that measure customersatisfaction.

    Notes: Investigates the industrial location decision behaviour of firms.The behaviour was determined by an examination of the firms' attitudesmeasured on "location variables". Firms representing variouscountries that actually located in an international industrial park andthose that considered but did not locate in the park, provided a sampleframe for the study. Three models were developed from the data thatsupplement or complement traditional approaches to industrial locationanalysis. The models provide a method for management of an existingindustrial site to develop an appropriate marketing strategy for thetarget firms, and to plan modifications based on firms' attitudes.     Notes: Abstract Demands for health care reform will increase service utilization, much of which will fall on a system of expanded primary care providers, many of whom will not be specialists in psychiatry. These providers will need tools to augment their decision-making process. In this paper, we explore the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in three different field sites to predict inpatient psychiatric Length-Of-Stay (LOS). This study describes the development and implementation of a runtime system in three different psychiatric facilities. Data was collected at these respective sites using the runtime system, and then this data was used to retrain the networks to determine if site-specific data would improve accuracy of prediction of LOS. The results indicate that ANNs trained with state hospital data could accurately predict LOS in two different community hospital psychiatric units. When the respective ANNs were retrained with approximately 10% new data from these specific hospitals, rates of improvement ranged from 3% to 15%. Our findings demonstrate that an ANN can adapt to different treatment settings and, when retrained, significantly improve prediction of LOS. Prediction rates by the ANN after retraining are comparable to results of a clinical team.

    Notes: Resonant power absorption is an important phenomenon during microwave heating. The resonances that occur when plane electromagnetic waves are incident on infinitely long cylinders and slabs are investigated as a function of sample dimensions. For cylinders two kinds of incident waves are studied: TMz when the electric field is oriented along the axis of the cylinder and TEz when the magnetic field is oriented along the axis. At a resonant condition the overage power absorbed by the sample is a local maximum. Due to attenuation within the sample the resonances decrease in intensity as the sample size increases. Using the dielectric properties of water, resonances are found to be a function of the ratio of the sample dimension to the wavelength of radiation, λs, in the sample. For slabs of thickness L and integer values of n, resonances occurred at L/λs = 0.5n; for cylinders of diameter D, resonances occurred at D/λs = 0.5n - 0.257. The generality of these relations to predict resonances in other food samples are shown using existing dielectric data. Resonances in cylinders for both polarizations occurred at similar radii. However, the radius at which the first resonance occurred for the TMz case was absent in the TEz case.
