Abstract A cell theory is proposed to obtain the full phase diagram of hard spherocylinders involving isotropic, nematic, smectic as well as plastic and aligned crystalline phases. Despite its conceptual and numerical simplicity this free-volume theory yields the correct topology of the phase diagram in semi-quantitative agreement with recent computer simulations.
