Notizen: Abstract. Taking advantage of the fast and accurate X-ray scattering techniques recently developed in our laboratory, we tackled the study of the structural alterations induced in myelin by malnutrition. Our work was performed on sciatic and optic nerves dissected from rats fed with either a normal or a low-protein caloric diet, as a function of age (from birth to 60 days). By way of electrophysiological controls we also measured (on the sciatic nerves) the height and velocity of the compound action potential. Malnutrition was found to decrease the amount of myelin and to impair the packing order of the membranes in the sheaths.

Notizen: Abstract: It was recently shown that the shrimp high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and the β-1,3-glucan binding protein (BGBP) are identical, implying dual functions for the same protein: lipid transport and involvement in the defense system. Because this protein is present in plasma, and the hepatopancreas is a major lipid storage gland, we investigated the presence of the HDL/BGBP polypeptide and its messenger RNA in this tissue using a monospecific antibody against HDL/BGBP. Hepatopancreas crude protein extracts, as well as polypeptides produced by poly(A)+ RNA in vitro translation, were recognized by the anti-HDL/BGBP. Furthermore, a specific pattern was revealed in hepatopancreas thin sections by immunodetection. Strong recognition was seen in the epithelial cells of hepatopancreatic tubules, probably related to the secretion process of this protein.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract Mature female Mediterranean fruit flies, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), isolated from conspecifics for 7 days prior to testing in laboratory cages, were attracted to yellow plastic fruit-mimicking hemispheres or spheres in significantly greater numbers when groups of conspecific females were present than absent on fruit mimics. Attraction of females to conspecifics occurred for females deprived of protein or continuously provided with protein since eclosion, for fruit mimics that were unbaited or baited with odor of food or fruit, and under single-choice as well as multiple-choice test conditions. Attraction proved just as great to fruit mimics having dead conspecifics as to mimics having live conspecifics, was evident also when fruit mimics were orange or white, and occurred also in response to presence of live Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel)females on fruit mimics. We discuss our findings in relation to local enhancement, a form of social facilitation in insects and other animals.

Notizen: Abstract. This paper is a continuation of [TV], in which new bilinear estimates for surfaces in $ {\bold R}^3 $ were proven. We give a concrete improvement to the square function estimate of Mockenhaupt [M]. We apply these estimates to give new progress on several open problems concerning the wave and Schrödinger equation in $ {\bold R}^2+1 $ , and convolution with curves in $ {\bold R}^3 $ .

Notizen: Abstract  Most soils sown with field beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) contain indigenous rhizobia which might interfere with the establishment of inoculated strains. As a consequence, the benefits of bean inoculation are usually questioned, and the use of N fertilizer is gradually becoming a common practice. The present study had the objective of evaluating the effectiveness of inoculation and N fertilization in field soil with (site 1) and without (site 2) a previous bean-cropping history. At site 1, which had a rhizobial population of 7×102 cells g–1 soil, inoculation had no effect on nodulation or yield, whereas at site 2 (〈10 cells g–1 soil) inoculation increased nodulation, nodule occupancy by the inoculated strain and grain yield. N fertilizer decreased nodulation at both sites, but increased grain yield at site 1 but not at site 2, indicating that the response to inoculation and N fertilization depends on the cropping history. When bean was cultivated for the first time, indigenous populations of rhizobia were low and high yields were accomplished solely with seed inoculation, with no further response to N fertilizer. In contrast, previous cultivation of bean increases soil rhizobia, preventing nodule formation by inoculated strains, and N fertilizer may be necessary for maximum yields. A significant interaction effect between N fertilizer and inoculation was detected for serogroup distribution only at site 2, with N fertilizer decreasing nodule occupancy by the inoculated strain and increasing the occurrence of indigenous strains. Consequently, although no benefits were obtained by the combination of inoculation and N fertilizer, this practice may be feasible with the selection of appropriate N-tolerant strains from the indigenous rhizobial population.

Notizen: Abstract Anaerobic enrichment cultures with sediment from an intertidal strait as inoculum were established under denitrifying, sulfate-reducing, iron-reducing and methanogenic conditions to examine the biodegradation of mono-fluorophenol and mono-fluorobenzoate isomers. Both phenol and benzoate were utilized within 2–6 weeks under all electron-accepting conditions. However, no degradation of the fluorophenols was observed within 1 year under any of the anaerobic conditions tested. Under denitrifying conditions, 2-fluorobenzoate and 4-fluorobenzoate were depleted within 84 days and 28 days, respectively. No loss of 3-fluorobenzoate was observed. All three fluorobenzoate isomers were recalcitrant under sulfate-reducing, iron-reducing, and methanogenic conditions. The degradation of the fluorobenzoate isomers under denitrifying conditions was examined in more detail using soils and sediments from different geographic regions around the world. Stable enrichment cultures were obtained on 2-fluorobenzoate or 4-fluorobenzoate with inoculum from most sites. Fluoride was released stoichiometrically, and nitrate reduction corresponded to the values predicted for oxidation of fluorobenzoate to CO2 coupled to denitrification. The 2-fluorobenzoate-utilizing and 4-fluorobenzoate-utilizing cultures were specific for fluorobenzoates and did not utilize other halogenated (chloro-, bromo-, iodo-) benzoic acids. Two denitrifying strains were isolated that utilized 2-fluorobenzoate and 4-fluorobenzoate as growth substrates. Preliminary characterization indicated that the strains were closely related to Pseudomonas stutzeri.

Notizen: Abstract. In this paper, we continue the study of three-dimensional bilinear restriction and Kakeya estimates which was initiated in [TVV]. In particular, we give new linear and bilinear restriction estimates for the cone, sphere, and paraboloid in $ {\bold R}^3 $ , building upon and unifying previous work in this direction by Bourgain, Wolff, and others. In a subsequent paper [TV] we will give applications of these estimates to some open problems in harmonic analysis and wave equations.

Notizen: Abstract A method was developed for the generation of a “cold vapor” of cadmium by means of flow injection-chemical vapor generation from aqueous samples, the determination being conducted with an atomic absorption spectrometer (Pyrex glass T-cell). Several gas-liquid separator designs, atomizer designs, and the effect of several reagents previously reported as sensitivity enhancers (including cobalt, nickel, thiourea and didodecyl-dimethylammonium bromide) were investigated. The limit of detection, calculated as the concentration giving a signal equal to three times the standard deviation of the blank, was 16 ng L–1, and the relative standard deviation was 1.4% for a concentration of 2 μg L–1 and 3.8% for 0.1 μg L–1. The addition of nickel and thiourea to the samples provided improved tolerance to the interference of coexisting ions. Two NIST certified reference materials, Montana Soil and Apple Leaves (respectively containing ¶41.7 ± 0.25 mg kg–1 Cd and 0.013 ± 0.002 mg kg–1 Cd) were accurately analyzed. The interference of lead was overcome by coprecipitation with barium sulfate, and the experimental values obtained were 41 ± 1 mg kg–1 Cd and 0.013 ± 0.002 mg kg–1 Cd, respectively.
