Notes: Abstract A model for the human eye-movement mechanism is derived. The derivation is based on a literature search directed toward identifying and mathematically describing each component through physiological and anatomical considerations. It is felt that although certain parameter values may not be exactly correct (for the data were taken from a wide variety of animals), we can place a great deal of confidence in the configuration.

Notes: Summary Background Present animal models used to emulate type 2 diabetes may not accurately reflect the metabolic changes that occur in humans. Aims of the study The purpose of this research was to evaluate diets reported to induce insulin resistance and impaired glucose metabolism in rats as a potentially useful model for studying type 2 diabets. Methods Three groups of male Sprague Dawley rats (n=7) were fed either a control diet, based on AIN recommendations (53% cornstarch, 10% sucrose and 7% soybean oil), a high fat diet (25% soybean oil, 35% cornstarch) or a high fructose diet (53% fructose, 10% sucrose) for a 3 month period. Glucose tolerance tests were carried out in week 3 and week 9 of the experiment. At the termination of the experiment, serum insulin, glucose, cholesterol and triacylglycerols were measured. Glucose incorporation into glycogen and glycogen synthase activity were measured in soleus muscles. Results Similar weight gain was observed for all three groups of rats. Glucose tolerance curves and fasting glucose levels were not significantly different at any time point in the experiment. Insulin levels were unchanged for the controls (171±21 pM), high fructose (164±16 pM) and high fat (181±30 pM) diets. Fasting serum triacylglycerols and cholesterol levels were not significantly elevated by dietary treatment. In soleus muscles, rats on all three diets had a significant increase in glycogen synthesis in response to insulin, but synthesis was similar in all three groups. Glycogen synthase activity was also not significantly affected by long-term dietary intervention. Conclusions In this study, healthy Sprague Dawley rats fed high fat or high fructose diets for 3 months adapted to the nutritional intervention without developing classical signs of insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The author investigates the principal asymptotic expansion of the measure of approximation of particular singular integrals having a non-negative kernel with respect to the approximation of continuous, 2π-periodic functions belonging to theLipschitz classes Lip 2 * 1 (or Lip1 1) and Lip 2 * 2. A simple connection between the measure of approximation of a singular integral and the moments of the corresponding kernel enables one to calculate these expansions in an elementary way using the associated convergence factors. Thereby a more precise comparison of the quality of approximation by various kernels is possible. In particular the first generalized kernel ofJackson andFejér's kernel are considered.

Notes: Abstract Grab samples of shallow (5–35 m) marine benthic sediments and epi- and infaunal assemblages were taken from nearshore regions around Casey Station, Windmill Islands, East Antarctica. A hierarchical, spatially nested sampling design was used with locations (kilometres apart), sites (hundreds of metres apart) and plots (tens of metres). Two potentially impacted, polluted locations (adjacent to a sewage outfall and an old garbage tip) were compared with two control locations in an asymmetrical design. Significant differences in assemblages were found between locations and between sites within locations. Significant differences in the abundances of taxa at several taxonomic levels (species, family, order, phylum) were found at all three spatial scales. Significant differences were also detected between the polluted and control locations. Compared with other Antarctic locations, the assemblages were dominated by crustaceans (90–97% of individuals) and there was a paucity of polychaete fauna at the locations sampled.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes an investigation of the overtip endwall flow in a single-stage axial-flow low-speed compressor (absolute flow) and in a corresponding compressor cascade (simulated relative flow) with a tip clearance on one side. The clearance to chord ratio is 3% in both cases. Oil flow pictures of the rotor casingwall and cascade endwall are used to visualize and analyse the boundary layers on the walls at various flow rates and corresponding inlet angles, respectively. The results enable the different sources of endwall blockage to be identified and changes with flow rate or inlet angle to be determined.

Notes: Abstract Hypervelocity impacts on the retrieved Hubble Space Telescope (HST) solar array was investigated by our extended Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) model and the result matches well with the measured data in most of the particle mass range. The revelation of the altitude dependence of particles flux onto the retrieved surfaces provides some insight in understanding the observed higher flux onto Mir space station relative to that onto Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF). Our analysis suggests that a slightly higher primary flux onto Mir space station would be possible even without taking into account the secondary impacts, as a result of the existence of the highly eccentric orbits of small-sized debris. It is, furthermore, predicted that 43% of the measured impact flux onto Mir station in PIE experiment may be from secondary impacts, and a corresponding 7% for the detectors in Echantillions experiment.

Notes: Abstract A 3.0-kb genomic fragment has been isolated from Rhodospirillum rubrum (ATCC 25903) that contains an open reading frame (ORF) with strong homology to other known polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthase genes. This ORF has lower homology to the R. rubrum strain Ha PHA synthase than would be expected within the same species. We have conducted a series of heterologous expression studies evaluating the in vivo substrate specificity of PHA synthase genes from Rhodobacter sphaeroides, Ralstonia eutropha (formerly Alcaligenes eutrophus), Thiocystis violacea, and Nocardia corrallina, within the PHA-synthase-negative hosts, Ralstonia eutropha DSM541 and Pseudomonas putida GpP104. The N. corrallina PHA synthase incorporated the highest percentage of C5 monomers in the polymer when fermented in medium supplemented with 0.1% heptanoate as the sole carbon source. When the T. violacea and R. sphaeroides were expressed in the PHA-negative host DSM541, a greater percentage of C5 monomer was observed in the polymer as compared to the expression of the PHA synthase of R. eutropha, when the transconjugants were fermented in medium supplemented with 0.4% propionate. Evaluation for preference of medium-chain-length monomers demonstrated the flexibility of the N. corrallina, T. violacea, and R. eutropha synthase genes to polymerize a copolyester composed of short- and medium-chain-length monomers when the respective transconjugants were fermented in medium supplemented with 0.5% octanoate. These studies demonstrate that the PHA synthase from N. corrallina, T. violacea, and R. eutropha are able to polymerize a copolyester composed of short- and medium-chain-length monomers, while the PHA synthase from R. sphaeroides lacks this ability and only produces a short-chain-length polymer. These observations suggest that the composition of the PHA from the PHA-producing organisms does not necessarily reflect the inherent specificity of the PHA synthase.
