    Description: We present the results of a calibration analysis performed on Italian seismicity datasets of the approach proposed by Bakun and Wentworth (1997) to bound earthquakes epicentral area and magnitude from macroseismic data only. The calibration is required as the method derives an intensity magnitude (equal in the mean to moment magnitude Mw) from macroseismic observations by using a regionally suitable attenuation relationship of intensity as a function of Mw and source distance. To this purpose, a training set of earthquakes occurred in Italy since 1980 was selected, for which a large number of intensity observations and reliable instrumental determinations of Mw and epicentral location are available. Following the Bakun-Wentworth’s method, the distribution of intensity data with epicentral distance was analyzed for each one of the events considered and three different functional relations (linear, logarithmic and cubic dependence on distance) were calibrated. We also considered two better constrained (defined on a much larger dataset) intensity attenuation relationships recently proposed for Italy, originally derived as a function of epicentral intensity I0 and, thus, “converted” through an empirical I0-Mw relation. Performance of all the above relationships was then checked both on the training set and on an independent set of recent Italian earthquakes.

    Description: In the frame of the NA-4 module of the European project NERIES, a specific task is devoted to the determination of earthquakes parameters from macroseismic data. On this regard, a new methodology, implemented in the program MEEP, has been developed by Musson et al. (see relevant presentation in this session). Here we present and discuss some tests performed by using the MEEP program in order to contribute to the setting up of the code and to validate the methodology itself. To this purpose, a set of earthquakes occurred in different regions of Europe and with different ranges of magnitude have been selected. In particular, the main aspects investigated here are: •reliability of estimates of epicentre location, magnitude and hypocentral depth compared with instrumental determinations; •comparison with epicentral parameters derived by using other methods based on macroseismic data; •sensitivity of the methodology to number and geographic distribution of available intensity data points (IDPs); •sensitivity to the calibration parameters requested by the program. Results of this analysis suggested some modifications of the program

    Description: The 2nd century AD earthquake in central Italy is only known by an epigraph that mentions restorations at the ancient locality of Pagus Interpromium. The available seismic catalogues report this event with the conventional date of 101 AD, a magnitude Maw of 6.3, and an epicentral location at the village of San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore in the province of Pescara. Starting from this sparse information, we gathered all the archaeological data collected during modern excavations at sites which were presumably struck by the earthquake, to improve our knowledge of the damage pattern. The most recent archaeological material found in a collapsed unit is a coin of Antoninus Pius, dated at 147-148 AD. This may represent a post quem date very close to the occurrence of the earthquake. The gathered information has allowed us to roughly delineate an area of possible damage, including the Sulmona Plain and surrounding areas. Comparisons between the possible 2nd century damage distribution and (i) the damage patterns of more recent historical events that have struck the investigated area, (ii) a simulated distribution of intensity, given a certain epicentre (i.e. the Sulmona area) and a related epicentral intensity and (iii) a shaking scenario obtained by assuming the activation of the major active fault of the Sulmona Plain area (the Mt. Morrone fault, Mw 6.6-6.7 based on the fault length), have revealed consistency between the ancient earthquake and the activation of this fault. The comparison between the presumed 2nd century damage and the shaking scenario suggests that also the magnitude mentioned is consistent with the presumed effects of the ancient earthquake. Therefore, we can conclude that: (i) the earthquake occurred shortly after 147-148 AD; (ii) a magnitude Mw 6.6-6.7 can be attributed to it; and (iii) the probable macroseismic epicentral area was Sulmona.

    Description: The methodology proposed by Bakun and Wentworth (1997, Estimating earthquake location and magnitude from seismic intensity data, Bull. Seism. Soc. Am., 87, 1502-1521; hereinafter B&W) and calibrated with Italian data by Gomez Capera AA, D’Amico V, Meletti C (2008, Calibrating the Bakun-Wentworth’s method for the macroseismic estimation of earthquake parameters in Italy, this conference) was applied to the recently released macroseismic database of Italian earthquakes (DBMI07; http://emidius.mi.ingv.it/DBMI07). The database contains about 83000 intensity data points for 1430 earthquakes. In the time-interval 1900-2006, for the greater part of the earthquakes the instrumental determination (epicentral coordinates and magnitude) is available. Thus, the Bakun and Wentworth method (B&W) was applied to a large set of Italian earthquakes and the results compared with those obtained adopting the Boxer approach (Gasperini, P., Bernardini, F., Valensise, G., Boschi, E.,1999, Defining seismogenic sources from historical earthquake felt reports, Bull. Seismol. Soc. Am. 89, 94-110); epicentral determinations by both methods were then compared with the instrumental parameters.

    Description: As part of the NERIES (Network of Research Infrastructures for European Seismology) project, a catalogue of the larger European earthquakes from 1000-1900 is being newly compiled. A problem with previous pan-European catalogues is that they all involve merging of national catalogues that were compiled in different ways, leading to inconsistencies in the final result. A fundamental goal of the NERIES catalogue is that all events should be assessed using the same homogeneous procedures from the basic raw material, i.e. the intensity data points (IDP). Defining suitable procedures is, however, far from straightforward. A number of competing methods have been proposed in the past, and the issue of calibration is problematic. After extensive surveys of current practices, a test was conducted in which some modern IDP sets were massaged to resemble historical data sets. Results suggest that methods relying on a grid-search, attenuation-fitting approach perform better than other methods. We propose here a method based on the mechanics of earthquake perception, which allows for parameter estimation in different parts of Europe without the need for separate calibration exercises. An initial epicentral estimation is made on the distribution of high intensities. This used as the starting point for fitting an intensity attenuation model, which gives the final solution of both epicentre and depth. Finally, the data set is compared to expected intensity distribution from different magnitude events to provide the estimated magnitude events to provide the estimated magnitude, Mi, equivalent o Mw.

    Description: Within the European Project NERIES, sponsored by the European Commission in the frame of the Specific Programme "Structuring the European Research Area", the NA4 module is devoted to establish a distributed archive of historical earthquake. NA4 objectives are to establish the required tools leading to the compilation of a comprehensive, digital macroseismic intensity database for the largest European earthquakes (with magnitude 〉=5.8 at least) and a validated and homogeneous European parametric earthquake catalogue for M〉=5, to serve as an authoritative reference for users involved in the assessment of seismic hazard and risk. The main focus is devoted to the time-window before 1900. Some highlights about the whole NA4 project, actual state of the initiatives undertaken in the Iberian Peninsula to contribute to it and future developments are presented.
