We present the preliminary results of the oceanographic cruise CAFE_07 – Leg 3, conducted in the Napoli and Pozzuoli Bays in January 2008, on board of the Research Vessel (R/V) URANIA of the CNR. The aim of the cruise was the acquisition of high resolution multi-channel seismic profiles to understand the stratigraphic-structural setting of the Pozzuoli Bay area, with specific reference to the major offshore volcanic features, as well as the acquisition of bathymetric data on the seafloor morphology of the Bay. About 800 km of seismic profiles were acquired simultaneously by two acquisition systems, each characterized by different seismic source and streamer configuration, operating at different frequency ranges. Moreover shallow high resolution seismic reflection profiles (sub-bottom CHIRP) and multibeam echo-sounder bathymetry data have been recorded. The seismic grid consisted in a number of assistant profiles acquired over the Bay of Naples, along with a dense network of profiles with average distance of about 150 m between navigation routes, in order to obtain a quasi 3-D seismic coverage of the Pozzuoli Bay. This data set represents a part of the requirements for on-site detailed investigations (“site survey”) that are necessary for the development of an Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) proposal dedicated to the offshore drilling of the Campi Flegrei and is a relevant complement in the site survey of an ongoing project that has been submitted to the International Continental Drilling Program (ICDP).

Description: The development of the hiking paths network in the Campania Region, its marking and maintenance in the field, as well as the relative cartographic restitution on up-to-date maps are nowadays important objectives, since the naturalistic tourism in mountainous environment has recently become more intense, and consequently it is necessary a correct and secure fruition of the hiking paths in the various Campanian mountains groups. Therefore, it is important implementing a Geographical Information System (GIS) dedicated to the Campanian hiking paths network with the aim of process, storing and managing all the parameters and characteristics of the local paths, also during time. In this study some routes of naturalistic and environmental particular value have been selected, which are located in the Lattari Mountains Group, the Vesuvius National Park and the Capri Island. GPS field survey measurements have been carried out along these routes and stored using the national official digital cartography. The field measurements have been taken during yearly scheduled excursions of the Neapolitan section of the Italian Alpine Club. The acquired data have been plotted on the relative maps, stored with the relative attributes tables and visualized through Google Earth interactively. The obtained results represent a feasibility study for a GIS of the hiking paths network of the Campania Region, with evident advantages and possible future developments not only for the trekkers but also for environment protection goals.

Description: In the most recent year, the environmental monitoring is became important for managing of territory and mitigation of the geo-environmental risks. The integration of the current geo-technologies and geomorphologic, geological, geochemical and geophysical parameters is fundamental for excellent results. In this paper we describe a methodology of study to identify environmental anomalies (illegal buried waste) of the Marigliano town, in province of Naples, brownfield of national interest for the reclamation. Particularly we have been described the use of satellite imagines in several years that has been the goal of this research. Brownfields not known potential contaminated have been identified and managing in GIS system to give a base for realization of a control support system.

Description: The Campi Flegrei volcanic district formed within an extensional tectonic regime that was active in the region since the Plio-Quaternary times (Rosi & Sbrana, 1987). The tectonic elements outcropping in the area are mainly correlated with a circular geometry of deformation, and could also have been inherited by the regional NWSE and NE-SW normal faults; likely, such faults acted as preferential magma rise conduits feeding the active Campanian volcanoes. In this paper we apply a methodology for identifying the structural lineaments from morphometrical data analysis (Nappi et al. 2007) derived by processing of a very high resolution DTM. The criteria of lineament extraction is based on the identification of linear topographic surface features, such as valleys, ridges, breaks in slope, boundaries of elevated areas aligned in a rectilinear or slightly curvilinear shape and that distinctly differ from the patterns of adjacent features (Jordan et al., 2005). We have identified significant structural lineaments extracting the linear continuity of the morphostructural features observed on the DEM. Their spatial and statistical coherence has been examined and the comparison with the structural lineaments already known from literature has been carried out. The results of the analysis have been correlated to the spatial distribution of the recent seismicity (crises of 1982-1984 and 2004-2006) as well as with the local ground deformation measured through high precision levelling surveys over the last 20 years, together with the tiltmetric data continuously recorded over the last 10 years. The aim of this analysis is understanding the relationships between the recent dynamics of the area and its active structural lineaments.

Description: We have studied the inland disastrous evidences of the tsunami triggered by the earthquake (M 9.0) occurred on March 11th, 2011 (at 05:46:23 UTC) offshore the coast of Honshu island (Japan). This large earthquake has been generated along the subduction plate boundary between the Pacific and the North America plates. The followed destructive tsunami caused casualties and severe damages along the coastline of most of Honshu Island. The dataset used in this work is composed of data in the visible spectral range, provided by ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) and Hyperion sensors, while for the microwave we have taken advantage of the active sensors such as Synthetics Aperture Radar (SAR). The large amount of data available from different sensors onboard of different satellite missions have allowed to sample the gradual tsunami inundation receding during the days soon after it occurred. Unsupervised and supervised algorithms have been applied for land cover classification purposes, identifying and mapping the extent of the effects caused by the tsunami on the different land cover classes present on the scene nearby the Sendai coast. The change classes, which have been identified, are in particular the stressed vegetation, the structural/house damage, the flooded areas, the debris, the sand deposits and boulders. The synoptic view, which is peculiar of remote sensing satellite data, DTM analysis and the information extracted from such a broad spectral range data have allowed an analysis of the tsunami characteristics phenomenon, such as the minimum inundation distance and the minimum run-up, respect to physical characters of the coastal area, such as topography, vegetation coverage and coastal orientation. This study would contribute to the definition of the susceptible level of the coastal region to get devastated by tsunami wave.
