Notes: Summary The importance of the hydrodynamic instability for the formation of anticyclonic eddies just south of westerly jet stream in the middle latitudes is pointed out. Finally, the author would like to call attention for his earlier works on dynamic instability in 1941.

Notes: Summary It is shown that the conservation equation of potential vorticity in the barotropic atmosphere $$\frac{d}{{dt}}\left( {\frac{{f + \zeta }}{{\Delta p}}} \right) = 0$$ holds good, even in the baroclinic atmosphere, if it is permissible to introduce the isentropic and mass-conservation approximations.

Notes: Summary The movements of whirlwinds are discussed along the line of the phugoid theory, and it is concluded that the path of whirlwinds has the shape of a trochoid.

Notes: Summary Tangential and normal equations of horizontal motion along and normal to the characteristic lines (for example: stream lines, isobars, isotherms, etc.) are derived in general form. Then the later section of this paper is devoted to applications to natural coordinates and the coordinates chosen to lie parallel and normal to the isobars.

Notes: Summary Many writers treated on the problem of dynamic instability of westerly flow due to the excessive horizontal shear, and the present author discusses the corresponding dynamic instability due to the vertical shear. The critical vertical shear in indifferent stratification is given by the condition — the meridional component of absolute vorticity vanishes, — and is an approximate negative valueof 10−4 sec −1 in middle latitude. However the critical vertical shear in normal stable stratification is a fairly large negative value of 2 sec−1. It might be emphasized that the problem of this study differs fromRichardson's criterion of turbulence, for the present author discusses the condition under which the zonal flow is dynamically stable, whileRichardson expressed the condition under which the turbulence will decrease.

Notes: Abstract The mechanism of the maintenance of the mean zonal circulation of the atmosphere is discussed from the point of view of vorticity transfer and vorticity generation by atmospheric disturbance. The method of analysis used is quite similar with that given byA. Ångström which offers a simple explanation for the mean temperature distribution over the surface of the earth. The annual mean zonal winds over the earth are expressed in a single expression, whereas the zonal wind distribution given byRossby, Kasahara andKuo have all been given for the polar cap and the tropical region separately. The general trends of the latitude variation of the zonal winds computed here fit the observations quite well.

Notes: Abstract In view of the importance of baroclinicy for the dynamics of the general circulation of the atmosphere, the intensity of solenoidal field alongHess' mean meridional cross sections through the atmosphere as well as the baroclinicy alongPalmén's individual meridional cross section through the atmosphere are computed, tabulated and illustrated.

Notes: Summary As phenological indicators, the freezing dates of Lake Suwa in the Central Japan are tabulated in chronological order over more than five centuries since the winter 1443/44 up to the present. The years in the last 2 1/2 centuries have been characterized by warmer winter (i. e. later freezing), even though there is a definite sequence of fluctuation between cold and warm. Tree-rings analysis is also given for references.
