Notes: Abstract Within the framework of the hydrodynamic model the exact coupling constants of the coupling of the giant multipole resonances to the surface quadrupole oscillations of nuclei are derived. The differences to former variational calculations are discussed. It is found that the coupling constants for the terms linear in the surface variables are almost the same whereas the coupling constants for the quadratic terms differ appreciably. The influence on the photon absorption and scattering cross sections of spherical nuclei is discussed.

Notes: Abstract A method tsing photoelastic coatings and high speed photography is described for determining K1C values for brittle cracks propagating through mild steel plates. The increase of K1C with crack velocity at high crack velocities is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Radioactive sulphite was dispensed to rats by means of a stomach tube and the passage through the organism was followed. Almost complete excretion of sulphur as sulphate in the urine shows that sulphite is resorbed, follows the circulation of the blood and is excreted by the kidney. Experiments were made in order to find out the place of sulphite oxidation in the body of the rat. By estimation of the total radioactivity and the amount of 35SO3 2− in the different organs, blood, stomach and intestines it was shown that sulphite is already oxidized partly when passing from the stomach to the intestines. The empty intestines oxidize about one half, when filled an even greater amount is oxidized. Experiments showed that intestines filled with remains of food cause the sulphite values of blood and organs to decrease because of little resorption. In the liver only traces of sulphite could be detected. This may count for a sulphite oxidase activity in this organ. After increased resorption by the empty stomach and intestines an increase of the sulphite content of these organs was observed and thus the appearance of sulphite in the liver. In the liver, however, only sulphate is responsible for the total radioactivity. A sensitive method for the determination of sulphite by means of 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol was developed.
