    Description: The Atirro–Río Sucio fault system forms a major northwest-trending strike-slip fault zone in east-central Costa Rica. We examined the kinematics and temporal evolution of this fault system through geomorphic, structural, and seismologic analysis. This 150-km-long strike-slip fault zone traverses the northern flank of the paleovolcanic Cordillera de Talamanca and extends northwestward into the active Cordillera Volcánica Central. Historical seismicity includes frequent minor swarms and occasional moderate-magnitude (M 5.0–6.5) damaging earthquakes. Field geomorphic evidence, fault kinematic data, and earthquake focal mechanisms are consistent in showing dextral slip along the mapped traces of northwest-striking faults. Continuity with other transcurrent faults in northwest Costa Rica indicates that the Atirro–Río Sucio fault system may form the southeastern end of a regional network of northwest-trending dextral faults that accommodate margin-parallel displacement of the Central American forearc sliver. The Atirro–Río Sucio fault system originates within the Central Costa Rica Deformed Belt inboard of the indenting Cocos Ridge. We infer that ridge collision drives lateral escape of crustal fragments northwestward along an array of dextral Central Costa Rica Deformed Belt faults including the major structures of the Atirro–Río Sucio fault system. This zone of arc-parallel extrusion thus represents the root of the Central American forearc sliver. Consistent with recent geodynamic models, we propose that northwestward sliver escape along the Atirro–Río Sucio faults is driven by rigid indentation of the aseismic Cocos Ridge into southern Costa Rica.

    Description: Many nearby main-sequence stars have been searched for debris using the far-infrared Herschel satellite, within the DEBRIS, DUNES and Guaranteed-Time Key Projects. We discuss here 11 stars of spectral types A–M where the stellar inclination is known and can be compared to that of the spatially resolved dust belts. The discs are found to be well aligned with the stellar equators, as in the case of the Sun's Kuiper belt, and unlike many close-in planets seen in transit surveys. The ensemble of stars here can be fitted with a star–disc tilt of 10°. These results suggest that proposed mechanisms for tilting the star or disc in fact operate rarely. A few systems also host imaged planets, whose orbits at tens of au are aligned with the debris discs, contrary to what might be expected in models where external perturbers induce tilts.

    Description: In recent years, a number of planetary systems have been proposed to orbit-evolved binary star systems. The presence of planets is invoked to explain observed variations in the timing of mutual eclipses between the primary and secondary components of the binary star system. The planets recently proposed orbiting the cataclysmic variable system QS Virginis are the latest in this ongoing series of ‘extreme planets’. The two planets proposed to orbit QS Virginis would move on mutually crossing orbits – a situation that is almost invariably unstable on very short time-scales. In this work, we present the results of a detailed dynamical study of the orbital evolution of the two proposed planets, revealing that they are dynamically unstable on time-scales of less than one thousand years across the entire range of orbital elements that provide a plausible fit to the observational data, and regardless of their mutual orbital inclination. We conclude that the proposed planets around the cataclysmic variable QS Virginis simply cannot exist.

    Description: Investigation of core and outcrop samples of the Cenomanian Natih-B Member (North Oman) indicates that the different lithofacies present experienced rather different early diagenesis shortly after deposition. Transmitted-light, cathodoluminescence and backscattered scanning-electron microscopy, as well as stable-isotopic, X-ray diffraction and total organic carbon (TOC) analyses were employed to delineate the major controls on the cyclic pattern of early diagenesis and hydrocarbon source potential.The Natih-B intrashelf basinal carbonates are composed of pelagic sediments that exhibit high-frequency cyclicity marked by decimetre-thick lithofacies alternations, mainly between: Lithofacies A compacted, partially bioturbated, skeletal, organic carbon-rich mudstone to wackestone; and Lithofacies B uncompacted, extensively bioturbated, skeletal, sparry-calcite rich wackestone to packstone. Individual units are composed variously of authigenic and biogenic calcite (58.1–97.6%, average 78.5%) and organic carbon (0.3–13.7% TOC, average 3.6%), together with minor quartz, clay, pyrite, dolomite and phosphatic material (fish debris). Lithofacies A contains relatively more organic carbon, clay, pyrite and dolomite than Lithofacies B and constitutes an excellent source rock. Diagenetic textures of Lithofacies A are dominated by compactional deformation of burrow fabrics, faecal pellets and solution seams, in addition to zoned/bright luminescent, non-ferroan sparry and isopachous calcite cement in and around uncompacted foraminifer tests, in an uncemented matrix. In contrast, Lithofacies B does not show any signs of compaction other than microstylolites and is dominated by zoned/dull luminescent, non-ferroan calcite microspar replacement, in addition to pore-filling, predominantly dull-luminescent, non-ferroan, sparry calcite cement. Moreover, Lithofacies B shows evidence of isopachous and meniscus-style cementation, together with geopetal structures and mictritic peloids. Stable-isotopic compositions of both lithofacies were determined from whole-rock samples (δ13C = −0.9 to +0.9‰, average +0.3‰; δ18O = −5.6 to −3.7‰, average −4.8‰) and sparry calcite (both cement and matrix) subsamples (δ13C = −0.6 to +1.2‰, average +0.6‰; δ18O = −5.7 to −3.7‰, average −4.3‰); all results being relative to Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite.These petrographic and isotopic characteristics suggest that the Natih-B abundant calcite cements and replacements were precipitated early, prior to compaction, mainly from ‘normal’ (open, oxic) seawater at slightly elevated depositional temperatures. Some of the slightly negative δ13C values, however, indicate an addition of isotopically light carbon, probably derived from organic-matter oxidation by organisms living in marine pore waters. Based on evidence of extensive seafloor bioturbation and cementation, and their position within the depositional succession, the tops of Lithofacies B (wackestones to packstones) are interpreted as ‘discontinuity surfaces’ that cap shallowing-upward, fifth-order cycles, formed as a function of sediment starvation and increased bottom-current activity during relative sea-level stillstand/turnaround. In contrast, Lithofacies A (mudstones to wackestones) is believed to reflect high organic production coupled with high sedimentation rate and rapid burial. These conditions limited total infaunal colonization and extensive calcite precipitation, and preserved organic matter together with some escape burrows and in-place fauna, suggesting episodic sediment influx when more accommodation was available and seafloor diagenesis was minimized during relative sea-level rises. The relatively higher amounts of pyrite and dolomite in Lithofacies A likely indicate organic-matter degradation by bacterial sulphate reduction in anoxic pore waters during shallow burial.

    Description: A palynological analysis has been conducted on the Cretaceous sediments of the Abu Tunis 1x borehole, in the northern Western Desert, Egypt. The palynomorphs recovered have been analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively, and permit a refinement of the original stratigraphy with the identification of four time-rock units. These have been divided into four informal sporomorph units and one dinoflagellate cyst palynozone. These biozones are, from oldest to youngest: the Afropollis jardinus-Tricolporopollenites-Elaterosporites klaszii Assemblage Zone (early–mid Albian), the Elaterosporites verrucatus-Sofrepites legouxae-Cretacaeiporites Assemblage Zone (late Albian–early Cenomanian), the Sofrepites legouxae Partial Range Zone (early–?mid Cenomanian), the Proteacidites cf. africaensis Total Range Zone (mid–late Cenomanian) and the Canningia senonica Total Range Zone (early? Santonian). A barren interzone has been identified immediately below the youngest palynozone, and this may be related to the unfavourable lithology (i.e., limestone and dolostone). The absolute abundances of spores and pollen represent the first quantitative description of an Egyptian Albian–Cenomanian palynofloral, a flora that is characteristic of the Albian–Cenomanian Elaterate Phytogeographical Province. The early Santonian palynoflora is exclusively marine phytoplankton; terrestrial palynomorphs representative of the Senonian Palmae Province are completely absent. The quantitative and semi-quantitative distributions of Afropollis jardinus are compared with similar semi-quantitative distributions of this species from other wells in the northern Western Desert of Egypt, and this permitted the identification of a mid Albian–early Cenomanian Afropollis jardinus ‘acme’ as an important local biostratigraphical event in the mid Cretaceous.

    Description: We present a detailed dynamical analysis of the orbital stability of the BD +20 2457 system, which features planets or brown dwarfs moving on relatively eccentric orbits. We find that the system exhibits strong dynamical instability on astronomically short time-scales across a wide range of plausible orbital eccentricities, semi-major axes and inclinations. If the system truly hosts massive planets or brown dwarfs, our results suggest that they must move on orbits significantly different to those proposed in the discovery work. If that is indeed the case, then it is likely that the best-fitting orbital solutions for the proposed companions will change markedly as future observations are made. Such observations may result in the solution shifting to a more dynamically stable regime, potentially one where stability is ensured by mutually resonant motion.
