    Notes: Abstract Particulate organic carbon and nitrogen in sea water were measured in samples collected along a line 155°W; 50° N-15°S, during the cruise of R.V. “Hakuho-Maru” (KH-69-4). High concentrations of particulate matter were generally found at or near the sea surface; the concentrations decreased rapidly with depth. A consistent minimum was located in the depth range 150 to 250 m through the entire section sampled. The subsurface maximum layers roughly coincided with the chlorophyll maximum, but several irrregularities were noted. One of the most remarkable features of the vast stratum below 200 m depth was the presence of distinctively regional variation in concentration of particulate material through the entire section. In the section, we could define at least 6 large water parcels, vertically oriented, all with significantly different concentrations of both carbon and nitrogen. Variation in the deep water ranged from less than 5 μgC/l to more than 50 μgC/l. Correlation analysis between carbon concentration and apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) of ambient water for all samples showed that the carbon from particle-poor water parcels consistently decreased with increasing AOU, levelling to a practically constant low of around 5 to 10 μgC/l, whereas the carbon from particle-rich parcels was anomalously high (10 to 50 μgC/l) in the range of high AOU, and showed no consistent trend of convergence. The intergrated amount of particulate carbon in the total water column at each station was in the range 20 to 150 gC/m2. More than 90% of this total amount was in the water column below 200 m depth, and the correlation of total amount of particulate material between the surface layer (0 to 200 m) and the water column below 200 m depth was highly significant. These observations are considered to indicate that the downward transport of these materials may be much quicker than so far estimated, at least in some localized areas.

    Notes: Abstract Using the data from a wind-tunnel experiment, bispectra of orbital-motions of wind-waves and of turbulence are calculated, and nonlinear interaction of wind-waves with turbulence in water are discussed. The wind-waves or the orbital motions of them, at first, produce the “turbulence” coherent with themselves, and then this “coherent turbulence” changes to the “turbulence” noncoherent with wind-waves. Nonlinearity of the velocity fluctuations in the surface layer in water under wind-waves is almost due to the nonlinear energy transfer from the orbital motions of wind-waves to the “coherent turbulence”. The vertical variations of the power spectra and of the normalized bispectra suggest that the wind driven currents near the surface play an important role in the process from orbital motion of wind-waves to noncoherent turbulence.

    Notes: Abstract The wave-induced fluctuations of wind velocity over wind-waves measured in the wind tunnel experiment (Ichikawa andImasato, 1976) are compared with the numerical results estimated by a linear model (Model II) on the turbulent wind field over a dominant component of wind-waves. In the Model II, the undulation of mean air flow is introduced by adopting the curvilinear co-ordinates, and the existence of viscous sublayer and the influence of underlying wind-waves to background atmospheric turbulence are taken into account. The numerical results estimated by the Model II are in good agreement with the experimental results. The good agreement, which was not obtained from the previous model (Model I) in the Cartesian co-ordinates, is shown to be attributed to the undulating mean flow introduced in the Model II.

    Notes: Abstract The spectral energy balance in the wind-wave spectrum is studied with taking into account the energy input from turbulent wind to waves, the energy rearrangement due to conservative nonlinear wave-wave interaction and the energy dissipation due to water turbulence. Using the Ichikawa's (1978) model on the turbulent wind field over wind-waves and assuming that the energy dissipation isβ times greater than that due to molecular viscosity of water, the energy input and dissipation are determined so as to satisfy the condition that the nonlinear-transfers of momentum and energy conserve the total momentum and energy of waves. The nonlinear energy-transfer is estimated from the energy balance at each frequency. It is found that the energy input and dissipation satisfying the condition on the conservative nonlinear-transfer are determined by the characteristic height of wind-wave field and the friction velocity of air, and that the spectral distribution of the nonlinear energy-transfer estimated in this paper is qualitatively similar to that estimated by the non-linear wave-wave interaction theory ofHasselmann (1962).

    Notes: Abstract The velocity fluctuations of wind over wind-waves in a wind tunnel are measured with a X-type hot-wire anemometer at some heights over the water surface. The observed vertical profiles of the wave-induced velocity fluctuations and the wave-induced Reynolds stress at the wave spectral peak frequency are different from those expected from the inviscid quasi-laminar model;i.e., the observed vertical profiles of the power spectral density of the wave-induced horizontal or vertical velocity fluctuations of wind have the minimum value at the height much heigher than the critical layer, and the value of the wave-induced Reynolds stress is negative at several heights over the water surface. From the comparison between the experimental results and the numerical solutions of a linear model of the turbulent shear flow over the wavy boundary, it is shown that the discrepancy described above can be attributed to the atmospheric turbulence.

    Notes: Summary The fine structure of the goldfish olfactory epithelium was studied by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Six different cell types were distinguished. Identification of the olfactory receptor cell was accomplished by use of retrograde degeneration studies. Two morphologically distinct types of olfactory receptor cells were identified: one type bears radially oriented cilia (Type I cell); the other type bears microvilli (Type II cell). The other four cell types were not identifiable as olfactory receptor cells: they are ciliated cells (Type III), rod-shaped cells (Type IV), supporting cells (Type V), and basal cells (Type VI).

    Notes: Summary The terminals of centrifugal fibers to the olfactory bulbs of goldfish were studied by electron microscopy after transection of the medial, lateral or entire olfactory tract. The centrifugal fibers originate in the telencephalic hemisphere, pass through both the medial and the lateral olfactory tract, and form synaptic contacts with dendrites in the granule cell layer.
