Notes: Summary When making normal-force measurements in cone-and-plate, parallel plate, or Eccentric Rotating Disc (E. R. D.) geometries, a correction for inertial effects is often imperative. This is especially true when making measurements at high rotation speeds, using large diameter tools, or when the material under test generates little normal-force (e. g. for fluids of low viscosity and elasticity). Theoretical expressions for this correction are quoted herein and are tested for a variety of Newtonian fluids and test geometries. These are found to be accurate to within an experimental error of maximal 4%. Surface tension has no influence. The correction for parallel plate and cone-and-plate is different from that for E.R.D. It is also demonstrated herein that failure to make this correction can lead to apparent first normalstress differences which are greatly in error and even negative for polymer solutions. This is illustrated with an example using aqueous polyacrylamide solutions.

Notes: Summary Steady shear (viscosity and first normal stress difference), dynamic (viscosity and storage modulus), and rheo-optical measurements (polarized light micrographs taken during shear with stroboscopic illumination) were all made on a concentrated gel of poly-β-benzyl-aspartate. The properties were found to be strongly dependent on prior shear history. Results are consistent with the existence of a shear-sensitive and healable network.

Notes: Abstract A study has been made of the galvanostatic polarization behaviour of porous zinc electrodes as a function of electrode surface area. Correlations have been established between the electrode polarization parameters and surface areas as measured by BET and methylene blue adsorption methods.

Notes: Abstract A sea-level cosmic ray burst detector was in operation at the time of occurrence of 16 Vela bursts, between 1970 and 1973. No events were seen. Upper limits for primary γ-rays of 1011 eV or higher were set at 10−29 erg cm−2 Hz−1.

Notes: Abstract Consumption of carrot by third-instar larvae of Sericesthis nigrolineata was measured under conditions of constant temperature. Consumption increased curvilinearly with increasing temperature between 4° and 30°. Larvae stopped feeding at the lower threshold, but at the upper threshold larval mortality prevented further feeding. Larval relative growth rate peaked at 17.5°, with zero growth at 5° and 32°, and the proportion of food converted to growth was greatest at 14° with a value of 11%. Late third-instar larvae lost weight but continued feeding, except for a short non-feeding period, before entering the prepupal stage. There was no evidence for a diapause by mature larvae.

Notes: Abstract Let {U 1 ,⋯,Un} denote stochastic processes with imbedded signals {u 1 ,⋯,un} respectively. A mapT is said to extract {u 1,⋯,un} without distortion provided $$\xi _i = Tu_i , i = 1,...,n$$ whereξ i , i = 1,⋯,n are chosen apriori. The mapT is said to be optimal whenever it minimizes $$J(T) = E\sum\limits_i {||\Xi _\iota - TU_i ||^2 } $$ whereΞ i , i = i,⋯,n are suitable stochastic processes. The mapT is called an optimal distortion free signal extractor if it also is causal. This paper analyses polynomic optimal distortion free signal extractors.
