    Description: An examination of factors affecting the occurrence of field-aligned 2.3-keV electron precipitation has been performed by using data from more than 7500 orbits of the polar-orbiting satellite Ogo 4. Both season and altitude were found to be parameters that are directly related to the probability of occurrence. The highest probabilities occurred when the measurements were made at altitudes from 800 km to apogee (914 km), except during summer. In this altitude interval, the electron precipitation was more likely to be field-aligned during winter than during any other season. The analysis suggests the establishment by electrostatic charge layers of localized electric fields parallel to the magnetic field. The resulting potential distribution focuses the electron beam along the field lines in the region between the charge layers but destroys the focused beam below the lower layer, and thus an altitude dependence is created.

    Description: Photometers on the ISIS-II spacecraft provide a view of the atomic oxygen 5577-A and 6300-A emissions and the N2(+) 3914-A emission detected as dayside aurora in the magnetospheric cleft region. The 6300-A emission forms a continuous and permanent band across the noon sector, at about 78 deg invariant latitude, with a defined region of maximum intensity that is never less than 2 kR (uncorrected for albedo) and is centered near magnetic noon. There are significant differences in the intensity patterns on either side of noon and their responses to geomagnetic activity. Discrete 3914-A auroral forms appear within this region at preferred locations that cannot be precisely specified but which tend to the poleward edge of the 6300-A emission in the evening and the equatorward edge in the morning, where the difference between the two emissions is greatest. It is concluded that the discrete auroras observed by all-sky cameras in the day sector follow the 6300-A emission through the cleft region, though a definite cleft boundary is not defined.

    Description: Following a large sudden commencement on June 17, 1972, a large magnetic storm evolved, with a well-developed main phase and recovery phase. Explorer 45 (S3-A), with its apogee near 16 hours local time in June, measured the equatorial particle populations and magnetic field throughout this period. By use of data obtained during the symmetric recovery phase it is shown that through a series of self-consistent calculations, the measured protons, with energies from 1 to 872 keV, can account for almost all of the observed ring current magnetic effects within the limits of experimental uncertainties. This enables us to set an upper limit to the heavy ion contribution to the storm time ring current of a few percent of the proton contribution.

    Description: The local spectrum S(k, omega) of either potential or electron-density fluctuations can be used to determine macroscopic-plasma characteristics such as the local density and temperature, transport coefficients, and drift current. This local spectrum can be determined by measuring the cross-power spectrum. The paper examines the practicality of using the cross-power spectrum analyzer on the Space Shuttle to measure ionospheric parameters. Particular attention is given to investigating the integration time required to measure the cross-power spectral density to a desired accuracy.

    Description: Satellite measurements of field-aligned auroral electron precipitation were analyzed using 16 months of data from the OGO-4 auroral particles experiment. It was observed that the anisotropies are of short time duration and are most likely to occur when particle fluxes are high. Field-aligned 2.3 keV electron precipitation is found in an oval shaped region primarily in the nighttime hours, with a maximum probability at approximately 70 deg invariant latitude near midnight, congruent to and poleward of the auroral optical emissions in these hours. This precipitation was found to be associated with the high latitude boundary of auroral electron precipitation during substorm expansion and is characterized by a harder and more intense energy spectrum than typical isotropic precipitation.

    Description: Data from more than 7500 orbits of the polar-orbiting satellite OGO-4 have been analyzed to determine the existence of seasonal, altitude, or universal time differences in the occurrence of field-aligned electrons. Unexpected variations in frequency of occurrence have been found at different altitudes and in different seasons. In particular, the probability of observing this phenomenon at high latitudes was found to be greatest in the winter months at the highest altitudes attained by OGO-4. A localized parallel electric field acceleration mechanism is presented which could account for the particle observations.

    Description: Simultaneous measurements of low energy precipitating electrons and magnetic fluctuations from the low altitude polar orbiting satellite OGO-4 have been compared. Analysis of the two sets of experimental data for isolated events led to the classification of high latitude field-aligned currents as purely temporal or purely spatial variations. Magnetic field disturbances calculated using these simple current models and the measured particle fluxes were in good agreement with measured field values. While fluxes of greater than 1 keV electrons are detected primarily on the nightside, magnetometer disturbances indicative of field-aligned currents were seen at all local times, both in the visual auroral regions and dayside polar cusp. Thus electrons with energies less than approximately 1 keV are the prime charge carriers in high latitude dayside field-aligned currents. The satellite measurements are in good agreement with previously measured field-aligned current values and with values predicted from several models involving magnetospheric field-aligned currents.
