    Notes: The mean winter loss of pupae in four cabbage root fly populations in two peatland sites in Ireland in 1971/72, 1974/75 and 1975/76 was 58 · 4 per cent. Predation by carabids may have been involved as pupal loss was associated, in three winters, with the abundance of either Nebria brevicollis (F.) adults or carabid larvae. The parasites Trybliographa rapae (Westw.) (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) and Aleochara bilineata Gyll. (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) were recorded at average rates of 10·4 and 3·9 per cent respectively.

    Notes: Adult honey bees killed after honey harvest were analyzed and evaluated as a raw material for protein extraction. Bees collected were 49.8% crude protein, 7.54% total lipid, and 27.1% reducing sugar (moisture-free basis). Whole bees were homogenized, body proteins solubilized in alkali, chitin removed by filtration, and protein recovered by acid precipitation. Amount of protein solubilized by NaOH addition varied from negligible without alkali (pH 6.1) to 93% of body crude protein with severest treatment at pH 11.2. With alkali extraction at pH 10.5 and acid precipitation at pH 5.5, 59% of total solids were found in the precipitate and 41% remained in the supernatant. The precipitate was 66.3% crude protein, 9.4% total lipid and 7.9% ash. Heads, thoraces and abdomens were separated and each separately extracted (pH 10.5) and precipitated (pH 5.5). Amino acid analyses of heads (70.1% protein), thoraces (54.9% protein) and abdomens (36.6% protein) permitted evaluation of protein quality. Thorax protein was most homogeneous for amino acids analyzed, and all were nutritionally limited by sulfur containing amino acids.

    Notes: Abstract The Solar Maximum Mission Gamma Ray Experiment (SMM GRE) utilizes an actively shielded, multicrystal scintillation spectrometer to measure the flux of solar gamma rays. The instrument provides a 476-channel pulse height spectrum (with energy resolution of ∼7% at 662 keV) every 16.38 s over the energy range 0.3–9 MeV. Higher time resolution (2 s) is available in three windows between 3.5 and 6.5 MeV to study prompt gamma ray line emission at 4.4 and 6.1 MeV. Gamma ray spectral analysis can be extended to ≳15 MeV on command. Photons in the energy band from 300–350 keV are recorded with a time resolution of 64 ms. A high energy configuration also gives the spectrum of photons in the energy range from 10–100 MeV and the flux of neutrons ≳20 MeV. Both have a time resolution of 2 s. Auxiliary X-ray detectors will provide spectra with 1-sec time resolution over the energy range of 10–140 keV. The instrument is designed to measure the intensity, energy, and Doppler shift of narrow gamma ray lines as well as the intensity of extremely broadened lines and the photon continuum. The main objective is to use this time and spectral information from both nuclear gamma ray lines and the photon continuum in a direct study of the dynamics of the solar flare/particle acceleration phenomena.

    Notes: Summary Three indices of available P were evaluated with 20 mainly calcareous Lebanese soils using wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum L.) in the greenhouse. Both the NaHCO3-and anion exchange resin-extractable P were significantly correlated with P uptake. The relationship for NaOH−Na2C2O4 was not significant. Langmuir isotherm and actual sorption parameters were also poorly related to uptake. In general, soil properties were not significantly related to extractable P or crop uptake. Sequential inclusion of selected soil properties with test values only slightly improved the multiple correlation coefficients.

    Notes: Chick embryo fibroblasts were maintained at confluency for up to 35 days in medium containing 0.5% or 0.75% fetal bovine serum or 2.5% or 5.0% horse serum. At weekly intervals cells were subcultured and serially propagated in medium containing 10% FBS until their replicative lifespans were completed. The results showed that the replicative lifespan of embryonic chick fibroblasts was dependent on the cumulative number of population doublings undergone by the culture and was not related to the calendar time cells were in culture. Further characterization of 0.75% FBS maintained chick cells returned to 10% FBS medium showed that cells had protein contents and incorporated 3H-thymidine into DNA at a rate that resembled that of young cells, despite an advanced chronological age.

    Notes: Chick embryo fibroblasts serially propagated in media containing division ratelimiting amounts of fetal bovine serum underwent premature culture senescence as illustrated by accelerated declines in the number of cells incorporating 3H-thymidine, increased population doubling times, reduced cell densities at subcultivation, and reduced replicative life-spans compared to cells grown in medium containing non-rate-limiting amounts of serum. Low serum serially propagated “senescent” cultures returned to 10% serum containing medium had proliferative rates, incorporated 3H-thymidine, and attained saturation densities at confluency similar to younger cells. “Senescent” cells serially propagated in low serum and returned to 10% serum achieved life-spans similar to cells continuously grown in the presence of 10% serum. The results of these and other studies show that cells serially propagated in the presence of division rate-limiting amounts of fetal bovine serum, or at high inoculation densities, accumulate a substantial number of cells in the population during exponential growth conditions that are not senescent but are prevented from entering DNA synthesis becuase of mitogen limitations. Our results indicate that the amount of serum mitogen in the growth medium affects only the rate at which cells express their genetically predetermined replicative potential and not the replicative lifespan per se. These results are discussed in relation to the techniques that should be employed for studying cellular aging and the mechanism of senescent cell formation.

    Description: Microorganisms associated with coastal sands serve as a natural biofilter, providing essential nutrient recycling in nearshore environments and acting to maintain coastal ecosystem health. Anthropogenic stressors often impact these ecosystems, but little is known about whether these disturbances can be identified through microbial community change. The blowout of the Macondo Prospect reservoir on April 20, 2010, which released oil hydrocarbons into the Gulf of Mexico, presented an opportunity to examine whether microbial community composition might provide a sensitive measure of ecosystem disturbance. Samples were collected on four occasions, beginning in mid-June, during initial beach oiling, until mid-November from surface sand and surf zone waters at seven beaches stretching from Bay St. Louis, MS to St. George Island, FL USA. Oil hydrocarbon measurements and NOAA shoreline assessments indicated little to no impact on the two most eastern beaches (controls). Sequence comparisons of bacterial ribosomal RNA gene hypervariable regions isolated from beach sands located to the east and west of Mobile Bay in Alabama demonstrated that regional drivers account for markedly different bacterial communities. Individual beaches had unique community signatures that persisted over time and exhibited spatial relationships, where community similarity decreased as horizontal distance between samples increased from one to hundreds of meters. In contrast, sequence analyses detected larger temporal and less spatial variation among the water samples. Superimposed upon these beach community distance and time relationships, was increased variability in bacterial community composition from oil hydrocarbon contaminated sands. The increased variability was observed among the core, resident, and transient community members, indicating the occurrence of community-wide impacts rather than solely an overprinting of oil hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria onto otherwise relatively stable sand population structures. Among sequences classified to genus, Alcanivorax, Alteromonas, Marinobacter, Winogradskyella, and Zeaxanthinibacter exhibited the largest relative abundance increases in oiled sands.
