Description: The pearl oyster Pinctada mazatlanica is one species of the family Pteriidae which has the ability to naturally produce pearls. Its high quality pearls and nacar has made it one of the most preferable natural resource for exploitation. Unfortunately many aspects for age determination are poorly understood regardless of how important these aspects are for fisheries management. The larval development could take from 23-27 days before settlement; which may depend on water temperature, salinity, food availability and substrate. Growth rings for the prodissoconch and the dissoconch may represent each day of the larvae or adult`s life, the confirmation of the daily age mark will help determine the age of the organisms that can later be applied to different mathematical models. This work has been done with the sole purpose to determine larval and adult age for mother of pearl to use as core data in future larval drift, ecological and fishery model than can help understand population dynamics. Trimestral spat collection was done for a full year, from March 2008 to May 2009 at 10 different locations in La Paz Bay, S.B.C., Mexico. All P. mazatlanica shells collected where cleaned, measured, marked with calceine fluorocrome, cut along the shells height, dyed with Coomassie Blue R-250 and examined for growth marks on prodissoconch and dissoconch. Juveniles were only captured on the months of July- September (n=158) and August-December (n=143). Grater spat abundance was collected at San Gabriel, Gallo Island, Mogote and Mogote Point. The count for the growth rings of the internal cut of the dissoconch dyed with Coomassie Blue, was the same as the amount counted on the shell auricle ±2 lines, and where assumed as daily marks. Periodicity validation by calceine fluorocrome marking was unsuccessful; however this was achieved through the reproduction cycle.

Notes: [Auszug] THE idea of a charge density wave transition goes back to Peierls1 and, independently, to FrAhlich2 in 1954. They reasoned that a one-dimensional metal can lower its energy by distorting the lattice and forming a gap at the Fermi surface, thereby making a transition into an insulating state. The ...

Notes: Summary Over a 3.5 year period, illness and predation operated in a non-random manner on free-ranging vervet monkeys in Amboseli National Park. As a result, there was no correlation among adult females between dominance rank and reproductive success. Deaths due to illness were concentrated among low-ranking individuals, and appeared to occur as a result of restricted access to food and water during the dry season. In contrast, deaths due to predation were concentrated among high-ranking individuals. The precise cause of such increased vulnerability could not be determined. High-ranking females alarm-called at higher frequencies than low-ranking females, and were also more aggressive than low-ranking females during intergroup encounters. In contrast, low-ranking females were more likely to initiate friendly interactions with the members of other groups. The non-random distribution of causes of mortality suggests that individuals living in the same social group may confront different selective pressures. Perhaps as a result, individuals appear to respond differently to similar social and environmental variables.

Notes: Abstract Since 1973 the Geological Survey of Canada has been making estimates of the petroleum resources for Canadian sedimentary basins. The purpose of this activity has been to provide a systematic approach to making an inventory of petroleum resources for departmental planning purposes. The resource evaluation was processed by the Hydrocarbon Assessment System Processor (HASP), devised by the Geological Survey of Canada. Since then, demands on the evaluation capability have increased and at the same time evaluation data have been increasingly applied to economic analyses. HASP can no longer be adapted to handle the new challenges. This study contains a probabilistic formulation for HASP and establishes a framework from which the following may be calculated: (1)distribution of number of pools; (2)expected rth largest pool size and its distribution; and (3)generation of reservoir parameters for a given pool size. Play 10 from the East Coast of Canada was used as an example to illustrate the applications of the analytical approach presented. This paper demonstrates that the analytical approach has more to offer than HASP.
