Notes: The water absorbed by poly(vinyl acetate), PVAc, at 23°C was found in two states. The first, which can account for up to 4 weight percent, was bound to the polymer. The second was in a freezable or clustered form. The latter type of water had no effect on PVAc's glass temperature, whereas, the former kind plasticized Tg. In annealing studies, the enthalpic and dielectric response of PVAc when held at a fixed temperature increment, ΔT, below Tg, was observed to be independent of the amount of bound water. The time dependence of the shift in the dielectric relaxation spectrum and the recovery of the enthalpy towards its equilibrium value as PVAc approached its equilibrium glassy state from a lower temperature as compared to a higher temperature was initially slower. This delayed response to expansion was of the order of the polymer's average relaxation time at the lower temperature. A model was proposed to explain this asymmetric behavior based upon changes in the polymer's free volume as well as its occupied volume.

Notes: The goal of this series of reports is to develop rapid computational procedures for determining the rearrangement of fibers that occurs during the molding of continuous fiber composite components for flat layups. This report considers the shaping of a cloth into a hemisphere. /the numerical procedure developed predicts that a cloth can be shaped into a hemisphere without wrinkling. This prediction is compared with experiment, and various paramenters connected with the shaping calculation are discussed.

Notes: We have successfully used cross-linked, partially-hydrolyzed, polyacrylamide gels to concentrate solutions of high molecular weight solutes. The gels are sizeselective, concentrating solutes whose diameter exceeds 3 nm. They can be easily regenerated by means of pH-induced changes in gel swelling; this regeneration is consistent with that inferred from existing theories of gel swelling. The resulting separation process is a good alternative to ultrafiltration.

Notes: The dynamic contact angles of various liquids on a gelatin-subbed polyester tape were investigated by plunging a tape into a pool of liquid, in the manner of Perry and of Burley and Kennedy. The effect of the upper fluid was studied by replacing the air normally present by immiscible oils. A fair correlation was found at the point of air entrainment, relating the capillary number, μV/σ, to a physical properties number, gμ4/ρσ3. A dimensional correlation, relating the air entrainment velocity to the viscosity to the -0.67 power, was even better. At various velocities, the dynamic contact angle (or the dynamic contact angle minus the static angle) could be related to the capillary number, the physical properties number, and to density and viscosity ratios. Again, the dimensional correlations were better than the dimensionless ones, perhaps caused by an omission of a significant dimensionless group due to our inability to choose a suitable characteristic length. With any one system, the data could be expressed as θ = kNCab above some minimum velocity, or, covering all velocities, as (θ - θs) = kNCab. With air as the upper fluid, all the data at one angle lie within one decade, with capillary numbers at air entrainment in the range of 0.6-1.3.

Notes: Rheological characterizations were made for a coal liquefaction preheater slurry; measurements were made in line at high temperature and high pressure. Above 400°K, the coal-solvent slurry (35 wt. % coal) was pseudoplastic and was adequately modeled by a power-law equation. Experimental data over a temperature range of 400 to 700°K were correlated, and critical slurry velocities for transition from laminar flow were calculated for flow in several pipe diameters.

Notes: We identify dispersion approximations to the transverse average of the solution of the convective diffusion equation on exacting equality of a finite number of axial Hermite moments. The method unifies the dispersion of chemically active and passive solutes and generalizes dispersion theory to arbitrary transverse averages. We emphasize the importance of the scalar results via their application to the dispersion of a system of chemical isomers.

Notes: The main task of the θ convergence promoter is to afford a better estimate of liquid and vapor molar fractions in each tray of the column. The assumptions implied by the promoter prove to be reliable for conventional columns, while they may cause numerical instability when dealing with nonconventional configurations. In these cases, corrected molar fractions may be computed only after making a supplementary assumption, which in principle is not unique. So, the paper presents a new methodology which gives rather satisfactory results.

Notes: Recycle problems in a sequential modular approach are solved by adopting evolutionary models. When describing a process scheme by means of evolutionary models, a nonlinear algebraic system of equations is obtained. The resulting solution is utilized for updating the values of torn variables in the iterative solution of the scheme.

Notes: The compatible nature of a new polyester blend, polybutylene-terephthalate (PBT) and a copolyester of bisphenol-A-neopentyl glycol-terephthalate (CP-350), has been inferred from the single Tg by DSC and dynamic mechanical studies. Compatibility is further confirmed from the progressive melting point depression of PBT, and the increasingly coarse and open spherulitic morphology of the blends as the weight percent of CP-350 increases. At and above 40 weight percent of CP-350, crystallization of PBT is impeded by the presence of high concentrations of CP-350 which results in a low degree of PBT crystallinity (0-8 percent) in such blends. The melt viscosity as a function of blend composition shows a good fit to the Hayashida model.
