Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Reactions of elemental Sulfur with Halogenated MethanesAt 250°C a reaction between CCl4 and sulfur forms S2Cl2 and CS2 (besides small amounts of S3Cl2 and S4Cl2). CHCl3 and sulfur above 200°C under catalytic influence of AlCl3 are forming HCl, S2Cl2, and CS2; CH2Cl2 and sulfur also are reacting (with AlCl3 or AI as catalyst) to CS2 and HCl. Only at 345°C one gets,CS2, HCl, and H2S from CH3Cl and sulfur. At 160°C forms HBR,BR2, and CS2. Aluminium is necessary for the reaction of CH2Br2 at 250°C with sulfur, forming CS2 and HBr. A mixture of products (CS2,H2S, HBr, CH3SCH3, and (CH3)3SBr) results from CH3 Br and sulfur at 250°C. CH3I and sulfur produce CS2,I2, and H2S at 145°C. The same products are formed from CH2I2 and sulfur with aluminium as catalyst at 175°C.

Beschreibung: Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is the main activity-dependent neurotrophin in the human nervous system. BDNF is implicated in production of new neurons from dentate gyrus stem cells (hippocampal neurogenesis), synapse formation, sprouting of new axons, growth of new axons, sprouting of new dendrites, and neuron survival. Alterations in the amount or activity of BDNF can produce significant detrimental changes to cortical function and synaptic transmission in the human brain. This can result in glial and neuronal dysfunction, which may contribute to a range of clinical conditions, spanning a number of learning, behavioral, and neurological disorders. There is an extensive body of work surrounding the BDNF molecular network, including BDNF gene polymorphisms, methylated BDNF gene promoters, multiple gene transcripts, varied BDNF functional proteins, and different BDNF receptors (whose activation differentially drive the neuron to neurogenesis or apoptosis). BDNF is also closely linked to mitochondrial biogenesis through PGC-1alpha, which can influence brain and muscle metabolic efficiency. BDNF AS A HUMAN SPACE FLIGHT COUNTERMEASURE TARGET Earth-based studies reveal that BDNF is negatively impacted by many of the conditions encountered in the space environment, including oxidative stress, radiation, psychological stressors, sleep deprivation, and many others. A growing body of work suggests that the BDNF network is responsive to a range of diet, nutrition, exercise, drug, and other types of influences. This section explores the BDNF network in the context of 1) protecting the brain and nervous system in the space environment, 2) optimizing neurobehavioral performance in space, and 3) reducing the residual effects of space flight on the nervous system on return to Earth

Beschreibung: Images of the gravitational lens 2237+0305 acquired in good seeing have resolved the system into at least five components within the central few arsec of the object: the galaxy nucleus and four point sources in a ringlike formation approximately centered on the galaxy. It is found that the four point sources are distinctly bluer than the galaxy, but that they do not have identical colors. The observed configuration is well reproduced by a simple model that assumes that the four objects are images of the quasar and that the lens is a constant mass-to-light ratio, elliptical, de Vaucouleurs bulge.

Beschreibung: Moderate-resolution slit spectroscopy of the extended emission-line objects A1 and B1 located within 5 arcsec of the triple radio source 2016 + 112 shows that at least one is physically associated with the z = 3.273 quasar thought to be multiply imaged by a foreground galaxy. The data and theoretical models unanimously favor the identification of A1 and B1 with two separate clouds of ionized gas that lie within a few kiloparsecs of the primary A/B QSO and radio source. The available evidence does not support the view that they are multiple images of a single object or their classification as separate (companion) galaxies.

Beschreibung: A survey for faint quasars has been conducted using slitless spectroscopy with the PFUEI at the 200 inch (5 m) telescope. The survey covers a total of 0.91 sq deg in 113 fields at galactic latitudes above 30 deg. Calibrated spectra in the range 4500-7200 A were obtained for more than 9000 objects. Emission-line candidates were selected on the basis of two criteria: the equivalent width must exceed 50 A, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the detection of the line versus the sky background should be larger than 7. Among 45 candidates so selected, subsequent slit spectroscopy confirmed 27 emission-line objects. Among these, 17 are emission-line galaxies with redshifts in the range 0.04-0.31, and 10 are quasars with redshifts between 0.91 and 2.66. The well-defined selection criteria for these objects, together with the distribution of rest frame equivalent widths of the emission lines, allow derivation of the area of sky covered as a function of the continuum limiting magnitude. The observed number of quasars in the redshift range 0.7-2.7 agrees well with that predicted by the luminosity function models published by Schmidt and Green in 1983. It is concluded that quasars with an absolute magnitude of M(B) = -25 suffer a redshift cutoff near or below a redshift of 3.
