Description / Table of Contents: This book presents carefully edited and peer-reviewed papers from the 3rd International Workshop on Occultations for Probing Atmosphere and Climate (OPAC-3), held in Graz, Austria. Starting with an overview on occultation methodology and its applications, the topics comprise the use of occultation data in numerical weather prediction and atmospheric wave analysis as well as in climate monitoring and change research. It covers results from current radio occultation missions (CHAMP to Formosat-3/COSMIC) and from solar, lunar, and stellar occultation by the SCIAMACHY and GOMOS instruments onboard ENVISAT. Description / Table of Contents: Four moorings were deployed in Prydz Bay during 1985 to collect information at four depths at four sites on water speed, direction, temperature, and in some cases, conductivity. The reduced data and notes on the data acquisition methods and locations are presented. Some initial comments on the characteristics of the data are given and some speculation on the implications of the data is included. An initial description of the physical oceanography of Prydz Bay provided the first input to a database of sufficient intregrity and quantitiy for numerical modelling purposes.

Description / Table of Contents: Previous exploration and ornithology in the Rauer Islands are reviewed. Estimates of the nesting populations of southern fulmars and Antarctic petrels are compared with censuses conducted in 1983 / 84 and 1984 / 85. Population estimates varied considerably between years, and within the same year between different observers. To remedy this situation the three islands with sympatric breeding populations of the two species were divided into counting units, which are detailed with photographs. The total populations of surface-nesting petrels are in the order of 14000 pairs of fulmars, 2500 pairs of Antarctic petrels and 400 pairs of cape petrels. Chick survival was estimated at the time of banding and varied considerably between species, islands and years.
