    Description: This study reports changes in ascorbic acid (AA) in anchoveta eggs, copepods and zooplankton during the 2006, 2007 and 2009 main spawning seasons in the coastal area of the central Humboldt Current System, Chile. Anchoveta eggs, copepods and total zooplankton community shared a seasonal variation and an increasing trend in AA concentration from winter through spring which was associated with the spring diatom bloom. The lineal relationship observed between AA concentration in anchoveta eggs, chlorophyll a and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) suggests that the increase in phytoplankton abundance could also increase the amount of AA in the spawning female anchoveta incorporated through tissue, thus increasing the concentration in their eggs. Ascorbic acid concentrations in copepods presented size (weight) dependence. Small copepods (e.g. Acartia, Oithona) had AA concentrations two orders of magnitude higher than the heavier weight class copepods (e.g. Calanus, Rhincalanus). Results of the determination of glutathione and the antioxidant potential showed a similar trend in interannual variations, suggesting that cold SST conditions observed in the 2007 spawning season could increase the consumption of antioxidants in early stages. Potential connections between AA concentration in the food web on anchoveta reproduction and egg hatching and embryo malformations are discussed.

    Description: The solar wind-magnetosphere coupling problem during intense magnetic storms was investigated for ten intense magnetic storm events occurring between August 16, 1978 to December 28, 1979. Particular attention was given to the dependence of the ring current energization on the ISEE-measured solar-wind parameters and the evolution of the ring current during the main phase of the intense storms. Several coupling functions were tested as energy input, and several sets of the ring current decay time-constant were searched for the best correlation with the Dst response. Results indicate that a large-scale magnetopause reconnection operates during an intense storm event and that the solar wind ram pressure plays an important role in the energization of the ring current.

    Description: A study by Sauvaud et al. (1987) on the overall magnetospheric response to a southward turning of the IMF on March 4, 1979 is discussed. Because the coupling function epsilon for the most intense substorm in their study did not show any appreciable intensification prior to the occurrence of the substorm, Sauvaud et al. concluded that the substorm was driven by a magnetospheric reservoir. It is suggested that the coupling function epsilon does not necessarily well represent the magnetospheric energization due to possible combinations of solar wind parameters that are expected to influence the coupling. Therefore, it is concluded that the main substorm studied by Sauvaud et al. was probably driven by the solar wind.

    Description: Linking lower and higher trophic levels requires special focus on the essential role played by mid-trophic levels, i.e., the zooplankton. One of the most relevant pieces of information regarding zooplankton in terms of flux of energy lies in its size structure. In this study, an extensive data set of size measurements is presented, covering parts of the western European continental shelf and slope, from the Galician coast to the Ushant front, during the springs from 2005 to 2012. Zooplankton size spectra were estimated using measurements carried out in situ with the Laser Optical Plankton Counter (LOPC) and with an image analysis of WP2 net samples (200 μm mesh size) performed following the ZooScan methodology. The LOPC counts and sizes particles within 100–2000 μm of spherical equivalent diameter (ESD), whereas the WP2/ZooScan allows for counting, sizing and identification of zooplankton from ~ 400 μm ESD. The difference between the LOPC (all particles) and the WP2/ZooScan (zooplankton only) was assumed to provide the size distribution of non-living particles, whose descriptors were related to a set of explanatory variables (including physical, biological and geographic descriptors). A statistical correction based on these explanatory variables was further applied to the LOPC size distribution in order to remove the non-living particles part, and therefore estimate the size distribution of zooplankton. This extensive data set provides relevant information about the zooplankton size distribution variability, productivity and trophic transfer efficiency in the pelagic ecosystem of the Bay of Biscay at a regional and interannual scale.

    Description: Loss mechanisms which come into play when solar cell modules are mounted in arrays are identified. Losses can occur either from a reduction in the array electrical performance or with nonoptimal extraction of power from the array. Electrical performance degradation is caused by electrical mismatch, transmission losses from cell surface soiling and steep angle of reflectance, and electrical losses from field wiring resistance and the voltage drop across blocking diodes. The second type of loss, concerned with the operating points of the array, can involve nonoptimal load impedance and limiting the operating envelope of the array to specific ranges of voltage and current. Each of the loss mechanisms are discussed and average energy losses expected from soiling, steep reflectance angles and circuit losses are calculated.

    Description: This paper discusses the results of a study to determine the hot-spot susceptibility of amorphous-silicon (a-Si) cells and modules, and to provide guidelines for reducing that susceptibility. Amorphous-Si cells are shown to have hot-spot susceptibility levels similar to crystalline-silicon (C-Si) cells. This premise leads to the fact that the same general guidelines must apply to protecting a-Si cells from hot-spot stressing that apply to C-Si cells. Recommendations are made on ways of reducing a-Si module hot-spot susceptibility including the traditional method of using bypass diodes and a new method unique to thin-film cells, limiting the string current by limiting cell area.

    Description: The separator technology is a critical element in the nickel-hydrogen (Ni-H2) systems. Previous research and development work carried out at NASA Lewis Research Center has determined that separators made from zirconium oxide (ZrO2) and potassium titanate (PKT) fibers will function satisfactorily in Ni-H2 cells without exhibiting the problems associated with the asbestos separators. A program has been established to transfer the separator technology into a commercial production line. A detailed plan of this program will be presented and the preliminary results will be discussed.

    Description: An analysis of ISEE-3 field and plasma data shows that 10 intense magnetic storms that occurred in 1979 were caused by long-duration, large-amplitude (13-30 nT) and negative (less than -10 nT) IMF Bz events associated with interplanetary duskward-electric fields of greater than 5 mV/m. The results suggest that these criteria may be used as predictors of intense storms. A study of opposite polarity (northward) Bz events with the same criteria shows that their occurrence is similar both in number and in their relationship to interplanetary disturbances. The amplitudes of the storms were not found to vary with shock strengths.

    Description: A simple kinematic model is applied to SIR-B observations in the far field of Hurricane Josephine in order to estimate the swell origin in space and time. The SIR data was obtained on October 12, 1984, and the geometry of the hurricane swell kinematic model is described. Estimates of the wavenumber and wave age and generation regions of the system are graphically presented and examined. The data reveal that the waves of Hurricane Josephine were generated 0-9 hours before the SIR-B overpass.

    Description: It is shown that high intensity (AE of greater than 1,000 nT), long duration (T of greater than 2d) continuous auroral activity events are caused by outward (from the sun) propagating interplanetary Alfven wave trains. The Alfven waves are often (but not always) detected several days after major interplanetary events, such as shocks and solar wind density enhancements. Presumably, magnetic reconnection between the southward components of the Alfven wave magnetic fields and magnetospheric fields is the mechanism for transfer of solar wind energy to the magnetosphere.
