    Description: DNA mimic proteins occupy the DNA binding sites of DNA-binding proteins, and prevent these sites from being accessed by DNA. We show here that the Neisseria conserved hypothetical protein DMP19 acts as a DNA mimic. The crystal structure of DMP19 shows a dsDNA-like negative charge distribution on the surface, suggesting that this protein should be added to the short list of known DNA mimic proteins. The crystal structure of another related protein, NHTF ( Neisseria hypothetical transcription factor), provides evidence that it is a member of the xenobiotic-response element (XRE) family of transcriptional factors. NHTF binds to a palindromic DNA sequence containing a 5'-TGTNAN 11 TNACA-3' recognition box that controls the expression of an NHTF-related operon in which the conserved nitrogen-response protein [i.e. (Protein-PII) uridylyltransferase] is encoded. The complementary surface charges between DMP19 and NHTF suggest specific charge–charge interaction. In a DNA-binding assay, we found that DMP19 can prevent NHTF from binding to its DNA-binding sites. Finally, we used an in situ gene regulation assay to provide evidence that NHTF is a repressor of its down-stream genes and that DMP19 can neutralize this effect. We therefore conclude that the interaction of DMP19 and NHTF provides a novel gene regulation mechanism in Neisseria spps.

    Description: A process for the recovery and purification of terephthalic acid (TA) from alkali reduction wastewater is reported. TA was first precipitated from alkali reduction wastewater by acidification with sulfuric acid, and then the produced crude TA was dissolved in dimethylacetamide (DMA) so that crude TA could be purified from the solution by cooling crystallization. The results indicated that acidification could reduce the chemical oxygen demand of the wastewater by 83 %, and the purity of TA by crystallization could reach 99.91 %. A correlation was proposed in describing the solubility of crude TA in DMA from 303.4 to 358.65 K, which gives a mean relative discrepancy of less than 1.14 %. The cooling rate of the mother liquor had a large influence on the crystal size distribution. At an average cooling rate of 1.18 K min –1 , the particle size distribution of TA was narrow and the average size was about 100 μm. In a bench-scale study, it was demonstrated that the crystallized product can be recycled as the raw material for polyethylene terephthalate production. Terephthalic acid (TA) was successfully recovered and purified from alkali reduction wastewater, by acidification with sulfuric acid and by cooling crystallization with dimethylacetamide. The chemical oxygen demand of the wastewater was effectively reduced, and TA with a purity of 99.91 % was obtained.

    Description: 5-methylcytosine (5mC) in DNA plays an important role in gene expression, genomic imprinting, and suppression of transposable elements. 5mC can be converted to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) by the Tet (ten eleven translocation) proteins. Here, we show that, in addition to 5hmC, the Tet proteins can generate 5-formylcytosine (5fC) and 5-carboxylcytosine (5caC) from 5mC in an enzymatic activity-dependent manner. Furthermore, we reveal the presence of 5fC and 5caC in genomic DNA of mouse embryonic stem cells and mouse organs. The genomic content of 5hmC, 5fC, and 5caC can be increased or reduced through overexpression or depletion of Tet proteins. Thus, we identify two previously unknown cytosine derivatives in genomic DNA as the products of Tet proteins.     Notes: Thermal stability for Pd/n-GaSb Schottky contacts is analyzed and studied. At room temperature, Pd/n-GaSb Schottky diodes have better performance, but when the annealing temperature is increased to 300 and 450 °C for 30 min, Schottky contacts gradually become ohmic contacts. From the measurement of Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis, the result indicates that the interdiffusion between palladium and gallium forming Ga5Pd is the dominant factor for degrading properties of Schottky diodes.

    Notes: Annealing behaviors of dislocation loops formed near the projected range (Rp loops) in 150 keV, 5×1015/cm2 As+- implanted (001)Si have been studied by both planview and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. Factors influencing the formation and growth of the Rp loops, such as annealing temperature and time, as well as single- and two-step annealings have been investigated. The Rp loops were observed in samples annealed at 550–900 °C for 0.5 h. The loops were also found in samples annealed at 800 °C for a time as short as 1 s and as long as 8 h. However, they were not seen in samples annealed at 470 °C for 4 h, 500 °C for 2 h, or 550 °C for 15 min. The annealing behaviors of Rp loops in single- and two-step annealed samples and in samples with an oxide capping layer were found to be consistent with the suggestion that their formation is related to the agglomeration of self-interstitials mediated by the presence of a high concentration of electrically inactive arsenic atoms.

    Notes: High Tc Tl–Ba–Ca–Cu–O superconducting thin films have been made by the dc magnetron sputtering followed by postannealing. In this study, a Tl-based microstrip ring resonator was fabricated by using standard microelectronic photolithographic patterning and wet chemical etching. Experimental results indicated that these ring resonators exhibit the best unloaded Q of 3269 at its resonant frequency of 3.35 GHz and some other samples display the double resonant behavior at 77 K. The frequency difference of the double resonant peaks depends on the input microwave power, and the splitting is ascribed to spatial variations in the film microstructure. The physical properties of the films are about 1 μm thick, as high as 105 K transition temperature, and greater than 105 A/cm2 current density at zero magnetic field and 77 K. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal stability of MoSi x Schottky contacts to GaAs has been studied. The contacts were analysed by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), sheet resistance, and current-voltage measurements. We have studied MoSi x with the compositionsx=0, 0.3, 0.6, 1, and 2. The films were annealed at various temperatures up to 850°C. The thermal stability of the films is found to bex-dependent. The best composition for thermally stable Schottky contacts is Mo5Si3. Good Schottky characteristics were retained with annealing temperatures up to 850°C for 30 min.

    Notes: Abstract High- T c YBa2Cu4O8 (124) thin films have been made by d.c. magnetron sputtering deposition on (100) MgO substrates. The effect of several processing variables, including the ratio of oxygen to argon, total pressure, and substrate temperature, on the superconducting properties of the thin films, were systematically investigated. The as-prepared films annealed in flowing oxygen at 800°C for 4 h under ambient pressure obtained nearly phase-pure 124 and exhibited superconducting onset transition at 75 K.
