Notes: Abstract Higher order moment computations are generally necessary wherever the recognition task exceeds the confines of linearity. This paper provides an overview of recent progress on a specific neural network design, which explicitly uses higher order moment information. Attention is focused on the training algorithms used in the design and on network performance in prototype applications.

Notes: Summary Semiempirical (PM3 type) calculations have been carried out on theE isomer of acetophenone phenylhydrazone and extended to include acetophenoneimine and phenylhydrazone. The optimized structure of acetophenone phenylhydrazone has also been compared with the solid state structure obtained from the results of an X-ray crystal structure determination. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/c,a=5.520(2) Å,b=8.944(3) Å,c=23.591(8) Å, β=90.28(3)°, andV=1164.7(7) Å3. The finalR value is 0.0549 for 1097 reflections withF〉3σ(F). The structure possesses a planar conformation and both N atoms possess trigonal-planar geometries. Results of the theoretical calculation are in good agreement with those obtained from the crystallographic data and indicate that conjugation between the hydrazone region and the phenyl rings plays a significant role in favoring a planar molecular conformation and has a significant perturbing influence on the bond lengths and angles associated with the hydrazone C=N-N atoms. A Mulliken analysis for the structure gives bond orders of 1.77 and 1.10 for the formally double bonded C-N and single-bonded N-N atoms, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The accuracy of CARS N2 thermometry has been assessed using carefully measured experimental data at high pressures for the temperature range 295 to 870 K and pressure range 1–20 bar. Excellent agreement between calculated and experimental spectra was achieved using statistically based fitting laws to model rotational relaxation. Temperature errors of within ±60 K were achieved using the MEG fitting law, and within ±30 K using an extension to the model (XMEG). Results of separate ab initio IOS calculations with ECS corrections for rotational relaxation gave good overall agreement but did not model the structure of the motionally narrowed spectra as well as the empirical models. The various models were also compared with some complementary data measured by DLR, Stuttgart in their high pressure burner for pressures up to 40 bar. This study also investigated the sensitivity of CARS thermometry to pressure; in certain regions a significant reduction in sensitivity was found. Other key factors investigated include nonlinearities in the intensified diode array detector.

Notes: Abstract The accuracy of CARS thermometry for H2O vapour has been assessed under carefully controlled conditions for the temperature range 295 to 900 K and the pressure range 0.0066 to 2.7 atm. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment was achieved for line-broadening regimes ranging from Doppler broadening to motional narrowing. Various models for rotational energy transfer and line-broadening were compared and where pressure broadening dominated, excellent agreement was achieved with a simple linewidth model, dependent only on temperature and pressure. Excellent agreement was also achieved using either energy or angular momentum based relaxation models to model motionally narrowed spectra in the pressure range up to 2.7 atm. However, good agreement between theory and experiment depended on the inclusion of state mixing correction factors, and good thermometry accuracy at high temperature was sensitive to the value assumed for the water molecular polarisability.

Notes: Abstract We present here a theoretical study of the nonlinear effect arising from one- and two-photon absorption-induced self defocusing in liquids. Experimental results demonstrate power limiting of 10ns, 532 nm laser pulses by linear and two-photon absorption in concentrated solutions of platinum poly-ynes.

Notes: Abstract Many reef-building corals and other cnidarians lost photosynthetic pigments and symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) during the coral bleaching event in the Caribbean in 1987. The Florida Reef Tract included some of the first documented cases, with widespread bleaching of the massive coral Montastrea annularis beginning in late August. Phototransects at Carysfort Reef showed discoloration of 〉90% of colonies of this species in March 1988 compared to 0% in July 1986; however no mortality was observed between 1986 and 1988. Samples of corals collected in February and June 1988 had zooxanthellae densities ranging from 0.1 in the most lightly colored corals, to 1.6x106 cells/cm2 in the darker corals. Minimum densities increased to 0.5x106 cells/cm2 by August 1989. Chlorophyll-a content of zooxanthellae and zooxanthellar mitotic indices were significantly higher in corals with lower densities of zooxanthellae, suggesting that zooxanthellar at low densities may be more nutrientsufficient than those in unbleached corals. Ash-free dry weight of coral tissue was positively correlated with zooxanthellae density at all sample times and was significantly lower in June 1988 compared to August 1989. Proteins and lipids per cm2 were significantly higher in August 1989 than in February or June, 1988. Although recovery of zooxanthellae density and coral pigmentation to normal levels may occur in less than one year, regrowth of tissue biomass and energy stores lost during the period of low symbiont densities may take significantly longer.

Notes: Abstract Studies were conducted in the Bay Region of Somalia to determine the incidence of charcoal rot in sorghum incited by Macrophomina phaseolina and the soil population of M. phaseolina in sorghum fields and areas of native vegetation. Charcoal rot was detected in 34 of 40 sorghum fields. Incidence (percent sorghum hills with diseased plants) in the four regional districts was 21, 70, 20 and 35% (mean of 15 hills/field and 10 fields/district) for Baidoa, Burhakaba, Dinsoore and Quansadhere, respectively. Soil collected from the 40 sorghum fields and from 40 native vegetation sites (10 in each district) all contained M. phaseolina. Mean soil populations for sorghum fields and native vegetation sites were 25.2 and 2.5 microsclerotia g−1 soil, respectively. Soil populations of M. phaseolina in sorghum fields were significantly (p=0.05) different from populations in native vegetation sites and ranged from 7 to 107 and 0.1 to 14.0 microsclerotia g−1 soil, respectively. Incidence of charcoal rot in sorghum was positively correlated with soil populations of M. phaseolina (r=0.53, p= 0.01). Correlation between ratoon failure and disease incidence was also highly significant (r=0.48, p=0.01). Correlation between ratoon failure and soil population of M. phaseolina was not significant (r=0.17, p=0.10). Only one out of 30 seed lots of sorghum grown in the Bay Region contained seed infected with M. phaseolina.
