Notes: Combined CI-HY method techniques have been employed in obtaining a 57-term CI-HY wave function with an energy of -14.66632 a.u. A method due to Brown has been adopted for obtaining this wave function and various shorter expansions. A 44-term expansion with an energy of -14.66606 a.u. is analyzed in terms of various pair effects, and qualitative arguments are presented for understanding these effects.

Notes: Combined CI-HY method calculations are reported for the ground and first three excited S states of He with an error on the order of 10-7 a.u. within the same 120-term basis. For He 1P, the four lowest states are obtained with an error ≤2 × 10-6 a.u. within the same 102-term basis. H-1 S and 1P states are also treated by the same CI-HY technique. The utility of an spd Slater-type orbital, rijv, v = 0, 1 basis is investigated, with indications that it might be an excellent basis for states of first row atoms.

Notes: The liver of the cobia, Rachycentron canadum, was examined by gross dissection, histological, and ultrastructural procedures. Other visceral organs were examined by histological techniques only. Unique perivenous smooth muscle cords are associated with veins in these systems, but they are particularly prominent in their association with the hepatic portal veins and their numerous intrahepatic branches. The perivenous smooth muscle cords accompany tributaries of the portal veins to the junction of the venules with the hepatic sinusoids. The reciprocal contraction and relaxation of various segments of the smooth muscle cords appear to result in pooling of blood in temporary reservoirs and in its transport to various regions of the organ. This process might apply to other organ systems as well. Possibly this unique relationship of the smooth muscle cords with veins functions in a diving reflex. Triads are occasionally encountered in the cobia liver. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: The rate of translocation and the percent of the time that cells are stationary have been measured by computer-assisted time-lapse cinemicrography in over 1,000 freshly planted human foreskin fibroblasts (FS-4 cell strain) for periods of up to a week and the effects of interferon-β (IFN-β) on these parameters have been determined. Cells were planted at 2.5 × 103 cells/cm2 in Eagle's minimal essential-medium (MEM) with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS). Frames were taken every 2 or 4 minutes and data were collected on both cell location and cell division as a function of time. After planting FS-4 cells require ∼48 hr to reach maximum motility both with respect to the translocation rate when moving and percent time cells are moving. Recombinant human IFN-β (800 μ/ml) caused a marked increase in the fraction of time cells were stationary and a decrease of lesser magnitude in the translocation rate, as quantitated during the period during which the stationary fraction for control cells was at a minimum. IFN-β also decreased the rate of cell proliferation, without any evidence of degeneration or death of cells. Our results contribute new evidence that the fraction of time cells spend moving directionally is an important determinant of their locomotory behavior and that this determinant is responsive to modulation by cytokines.

Notes: The dynamics of a system of two microbial populations having complementary metabolism are investigated by means of simple mathematical models of growth. Complementary metabolism as used here means that each population produces a substance - not present in the initial or feed medium - required by the other for growth. The simple models indicate that (1) something other than lack of the substrate or growth factor produced by its partner must limit the growth of at least one population and (2) the coexistence steady state of such populations in continuous culture is not stable with respect to large perturbations, though it is stable with respect to a wide range of perturbations.

Notes: The use of another air operated extreme pressure hydraulic pump fitted with either a needle valve or a simple microbore tube is described, together with the figures obtained for the soluble protein released from suspensions of commercially obtained baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The theory of the mechanism is also discussed.

Notes: Very good separations of non-ionic organic compounds have been achieved by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) using a tetrahep-tylammonium salt as an additive in aqueous acetonitrile as solvent. A systematic study was undertaken to determine the effect of experimental parameters on electroosmotic mobility and electro-phoretic mobility. It was found that pH, acetonitrile concentration, and the type and concentration of quaternary ammonium salt are important experimental variables. Under appropriate conditions, the separation window was enlarged and a broad range of electrically neutral organics, including very hydrophobic compounds (e. g. poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and fairly hydrophilic compounds were separated in a relatively short time. By adjusting the separation conditions, high resolution CZE of a specific group of neutral organic compounds could be achieved. A method for calculation of capacity factor was proposed and capacity factors for a variety of non-lonic organic compounds were calculated.
