Notes: We present a study of deep-ultraviolet-light-enhanced (4.1〈hν〈5.1 eV) oxygen reactions on GaAs from submonolayer to several monolayers coverage. The reaction is nonthermal and does not involve gas-phase excitation or dissociation of O2. Our experiments show a distinct wavelength and coverage dependence for the photoenhancement. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to examine the chemical nature of the oxygen adsorbate and the GaAs oxides in order to find intermediate reaction species and evidence of the reaction pathways. The roles of photons and photogenerated carriers in the reaction enhancement mechanism are discussed. The results indicate that a mechanism based on photoemission of electrons into the growing oxide film is most in accord with the experimental observations. Such electron emission would increase the field-driven transport of oxygen to the GaAs interface.

Notes: Use of hard electromagnetic radiation (λ = 0.12 Å) in diffraction experiments, in conjunction with thin crystals in transmission geometry (Laue case), minimizes multiple scattering, often referred to as the 'extinction problem'. A large crystal slab, completely intercepting the incident beam, was used in this experiment. Several structure factors have been measured in LiF and KCl, with greater accuracy than ever before, using the γ-ray spectrometer of the University of Missouri at Columbia. In the case of LiF the results indicates some compression of the valence electron densities, similar to what has been found earlier for NaF. In the case of KCl all reflections agree well with the values calculated from free-atom Hartree-Fock wave functions except for the 004 and 006, which are appreciably weaker than corresponding reflections with similar or identical sin θ/λ values. This result indicates asphericity of the valence electron density. The 111 is also much weaker than the calculated value, indicating that the negative ions are slightly compressed and the positive ions slightly expanded with respect to the free-ion charge densities.

Notes: Abstract Infrared and Raman spectra of the basic copper salts malachite, Cu2(OH)2CO3, and brochantite, Cu4(OH)6SO4, as well as of deuterated and 13C substituted samples are presented and discussed in terms of group theory and the hydrogen bonds present. The main results are that (i) the hydrogen donor strengths of the OH− ions are strongly increased due to the very great synergetic effect of the copper ions, (ii) the acceptor strengths of the H-bond acceptor groups (SO4 2-, CO3 2-, and OH− ions) are significantly modified by the linkage and coordination of the acceptor atoms — this complicates true assignment of the OH bands observed to the two and six different OH− ions present in malachite and brochantite, respectively -, and (iii) the Cu — O stretching modes at 430–590 cm−1 and 420–520 cm−1 for malachite and brochantite, respectively, exhibit strong, partially covalent Cu — O bonding.

Notes: Abstract Two rhamnobiose-lipid preparations have been studied by fast atom bombardment (FAB) tandem mass spectrometry. The principal rhanobiose-lipids contain the β-hydroxydecanoyl-β-hydroxydecanoate Rha-Rha-C10-C10 and the β-hydroxytetradecanoyl-β-hydroxytetradecanoate Rha-Rha-C14-C14. Both preparations contain minor components which are heterogenous in β-hydroxy fatty acid composition. FAB ionization of rhamnobiose-lipids in the presence of Na+ shows the formation of both [M + Na]+, [M + 2Na - H]+, [M + 3Na - 2H]+ and [M - H]− ions. Tandem mass spectrometry of the [M + 2Na - H]+ and [M - H]− ions give information about the sequence of the building blocks. Particularly, heterogeneity in β-hydroxy fatty acid composition is determined for the principal components and all the minor components present in the preparations.

Notes: Abstract The effects of added poly(vinylbutyral) (PVB) and oxidized Menhaden fish oil (O-FO) on dilute suspensions of Al2O3 in the azeotropic solvent mixture 73/27 Wt.-% trichloroethylene/ethanol were studied by static (SLS) and dynamic light-scattering (DLS). The DLS correlation function consisted of four terms from: 1) interdiffusion of the two solvents, 2) diffusion of Al2O3, 3) diffusion of added O-FO and/or PVB, and 4) an induced velocity of particles through the scattering volume due to “laser pressure.” The amplitude and relaxation time of all terms could be determined. Addition of PVB to the Al2O3 suspension resulted in an increase in particle size corresponding to the adsorption of a monolayer of coils. Addition of O-FO to the Al2O3 suspension did not produce a significant increase in particle size, indicating either no adsorption or a compact conformation of O-FO molecules on the Al2O3 surface.
