Description / Table of Contents: The book contains methodical overview of the main groups of biological indicators used in palaeoecology: pollen, diatoms, chironomids larvae, cladocera, ostracods, sponges, some other less widely used groups of invertebrates and a review on application of pedohumic method for palaeoecological reconstructions. Articles contain information on systematics, morphology, biology of the selected proxy groups and the modern approaches to palaeoclimatic reconstructions. Applicability of the biological indicators is illustrated by case studies from different regions: steppe Altay and Altay mountains, central and northern Yakutia, Northern Ural, west Siberia, lake Baikal, Tien Shan mountains, Middle Volga, etc. The book can be interesting for specialists in palaeoecology and students.
Description / Table of Contents:

    Keywords: DDC 512/.55 ; LC QC20.7.L54 ; Lie algebras ; Mathematical physics
Description / Table of Contents: This is the long awaited follow-up to Lie Algebras, Part I which covered a major part of the theory of Kac-Moody algebras, stressing primarily their mathematical structure. Part II deals mainly with the representations and applications of Lie Algebras and contains many cross references to Part I. The theoretical part largely deals with the representation theory of Lie algebras with a triangular decomposition, of which Kac-Moody algebras and the Virasoro algebra are prime examples. After setting up the general framework of highest weight representations, the book continues to treat topics as the Casimir operator and the Weyl-Kac character formula, which are specific for Kac-Moody algebras. The applications have a wide range. First, the book contains an exposition on the role of finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebras and their representations in the standard and grand unified models of elementary particle physics. A second application is in the realm of soliton equations and their infinite-dimensional symmetry groups and algebras. The book concludes with a chapter on conformal field theory and the importance of the Virasoro and Kac-Moody algebras therein.

Description / Table of Contents: This revised and updated new edition has entailed a thorough re-writing of the text to take account of the impressive advances that have been made in all aspects of earth sciences, particularly mineralogy, over recent years. The organization of the text and treatment of the subject remains the same with each of the common minerals of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks being discussed in terms of structure, chemistry, optical and physical properties, distinguishing features and paragenesis. Quantitative and qualitative correlations between the various aspects of mineralogy are shown wherever possible to provide a scientific understanding of minerals as well as their description and identification. Tabulated data and optic orientation sketches at the head of each section aim to make identification of each mineral clear and accessible. For this new edition the tabulations include unit cell parameters, and reflectances and Vickers hardness for opaque minerals. Selected references illustrate the different approaches to the study of minerals and include review publications of particular mineral groups. New for this edition is the inclusion of a fourcolour fold-out birefringence chart. This will be an essential textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students of mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry. lt will also have wide appeal as a reference work for postgraduate research students and research workers in related fields.

Description / Table of Contents: The handbook classifies the results of meteorological observations at the "North Pole 1-31" drifting stations for the period 1937-1991. The pecularities of observations and meteorological regime of the Arctic basin are described shortly. The work can be useful for those who study and develop the Arctic regions. The Russian Fund of fundamental research (project 96-07-89159) maintains the preparation of the handbook.
