    Description: This study reports the conodont succession across the Visean–Serpukhovian (V/S) boundary interval at the Naqing section, South China. Continuous centimetre-scale sampling of the relatively deep-water section in recent years has provided new data for a more detailed biostratigraphy of conodonts across the Visean–Serpukhovian boundary. Three conodont zones were described in ascending order: the Gnathodus bilineatus , Lochriea nodosa and Lochriea ziegleri zones. The first appearance datum (FAD) of L. ziegleri has been moved down to 60.1 m above the base of the Naqing section. The correlation of the conodont succession across the Visean–Serpukhovian boundary in the Naqing section with other sections in Eurasia is discussed.

    Description: Force and particle image velocimetry measurements were conducted on a NACA 0012 aerofoil undergoing small-amplitude high-frequency plunging oscillation at low Reynolds numbers and angles of attack in the range 0-20°. For angles of attack less than or equal to the stall angle, at high Strouhal numbers, significant bifurcations are observed in the time-averaged lift coefficient resulting in two lift-coefficient branches. The upper branch is associated with an upwards deflected jet, and the lower branch is associated with a downwards deflected jet. These branches are stable and highly repeatable, and are achieved by increasing or decreasing the frequency in the experiments. Increasing frequency refers to starting from stationary and increasing the frequency very slowly (while waiting for the flow to reach an asymptotic state after each change in frequency); decreasing frequency refers to impulsively starting at the maximum frequency and decreasing the frequency very slowly. For the latter case, angle of attack, starting position and initial acceleration rate are also parameters in determining which branch is selected. The bifurcation behaviour is closely related to the properties of the trailing-edge vortices. The bifurcation was therefore not observed for very small plunge amplitudes or frequencies due to insufficient trailing-edge vortex strength, nor at larger angles of attack due to greater asymmetry in the strength of the trailing-edge vortices, which creates a preference for a downward deflected jet. Vortex strength and asymmetry parameters are derived from the circulation measurements. It is shown that the most appropriate strength parameter in determining the onset of deflected jets is the circulation normalized by the plunge velocity. © 2012 Cambridge University Press.

    Description: Motivated by our interest in understanding collective behaviour and self-organization resulting from hydrodynamic interactions, we investigate the two-dimensional dynamics of horizontal arrays of settling cylinders at intermediate Reynolds numbers. To simulate these dynamics, we develop a direct numerical simulation based on the immersed interface method. A novel aspect of our method is its ability to efficiently and accurately couple the dynamics of the freely moving objects with the fluid. We report the falling configuration and the wake pattern of the array, and investigate their dependence on the number of particles, n, as well as the initial inter-particle spacing, d 0 . We find that, in the case of odd-numbered arrays, the middle cylinder is always leading, whereas in the case of even-numbered arrays, the steady-state shape is concave-down. In large arrays n≥ 5, the outer pairs tend to cluster. In addition, we analyse detailed kinematics, wakes and forces of three settling cylinders. We find that the middle one experiences a higher drag force in the presence of neighbouring cylinders, compared to an isolated settling cylinder, resulting in a decrease in its settling velocity. For a small initial spacing d0 , the middle cylinder experiences a strong sideway repulsive force, the magnitude of which increases with decreasing d 0 . During the fall, the left and right cylinders rotate outwards and shed vortices in anti-phase. © 2011 Cambridge University Press.

    Description: We present new families of gravity - capillary solitary waves propagating on the surface of a two-dimensional deep fluid. These spatially localised travelling-wave solutions are non-symmetric in the wave propagation direction. Our computation reveals that these waves appear from a spontaneous symmetry-breaking bifurcation, and connect two branches of multi-packet symmetric solitary waves. The speed - energy bifurcation curve of asymmetric solitary waves features a zigzag behaviour with one or more turning points. © Cambridge University Press 2014.

    Description: Breeding activity of pairs of south polar skuas (Catharacta maccormicki) in the eastern Larsemann Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica, was recorded in five of six austral summers between 1988 and 1994. More detailed observations of breeding success were made in the 1989/90 and 1993/94 summers. Although relatively few skuas nest in the study area, data suggest that there was inter-annual variation in numbers and locations of territories and chicks fledged. This variation is discussed in relation to increased human activities in the area (development of a summer base and more permanent stations) and to an enhanced access to human-derived foods. It is concluded that there has been some human impact on this species in the Larsemann Hills.

    Description: This paper presents the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of wavepacket evolution and breakdown in a Blasius boundary layer. The study covers the physical, spectral and structural aspects of the whole transition process, whereas previous studies have tended to focus on issues of a more limited scope. The simulations are modelled after the experiments of Cohen, Breuer & Haritonidis (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 225, 1991, p. 575). The disturbance wavepackets are initiated here by a u-velocity and a v-velocity delta pulse. They evolve through a quasi-linear growth stage, a subharmonic stage and a strongly nonlinear stage before breaking down into the nascent turbulent spots. Pulse-initiated wavepackets provide a plausible model for naturally occurring laminar-turbulent transition because they contain disturbances in a broadband of frequencies and wavenumbers, whose sum of interactions determines the spatio-temporal progress of the wavepackets. The early development of the wavepackets accords well with established linear results. The ensuing subharmonic evolution of the wavepackets appears to be underpinned by a critical-layer-based mechanism in which the x-phase speeds of the fundamental two-dimensional and dominant three-dimensional waves with compatible Squire wavenumbers are approximately matched. Spectral data over the bulk of the subharmonic stage demonstrate good consistency with the action of a phase-locked theory recently proposed by Wu, Stewart & Cowley (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 590, 2007, p. 265), strongly suggesting that the latter may be the dominant mechanism in the broadband nonlinear evolution of wavepackets. The dominant two-dimensional and three-dimensional waves are observed to be spontaneously evolving towards triad resonance in the late subharmonic stage. The simulations reproduce many key features in the experiments of Cohen et al. (1991) and Medeiros & Gaster (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 399, 1999b, p. 301). A plausible explanation is also offered for the apparently deterministic subharmonic behaviour of wavepackets observed by Medeiros & Gaster. The strongly nonlinear stage is signified by the appearance of low-frequency streamwise-aligned u-velocity structures at twice the spanwise wavenumber of the dominant three-dimensional waves, distortion of the local base flow by the strengthening primary-vortex and rapid expansion of the spanwise wavenumber () spectrum. These are in broad agreement with the experimental observations of Breuer, Cohen & Haritonidis (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 340, 1997, p. 395). The breakdown into incipient turbulent spots occurs at locations consistent with the experiments of Cohen et al. (1991). A visualization shows that the evolving wavepackets comprise very thin overlapping vorticity sheets of alternating signs, in stacks of two or three. Strong streamwise stretching of the flow at the centre of the wavepacket in the late subharmonic and strongly nonlinear stages promotes the roll-up and intensification of the vorticity sheets into longitudinal vortices, whose mutual induction precedes the breakdown of the wavepacket. The critical layer of the dominant two-dimensional and oblique wave modes reveals the progressive coalescence of a strong pair of vortices (associated with the-vortex) during the subharmonic stage. Their coalescence culminates in a strong upward burst of velocity that transports lower momentum fluid from below the critical layer into the upper boundary layer to form a high shear layer in the post-subharmonic stage. © 2010 Cambridge University Press.

    Description: Palm oil has been the world's main source of oil and fats since 2004, producing over 45 million tonnes in 2009. Malaysia alone has over 4·5 million hectares planted with oil palm and, based on common practice, ∼300 palm fronds are pruned per hectare per year. This agricultural waste is currently either being used as roughage feed or, more frequently, being left between rows of palm trees to prevent soil erosion, or for nutrient recycling purposes. This paper proposes an alternative use for palm frond as a source of biochar. A traditional method commonly use by gardeners in Malaysia to improve soil fertility was used to produce the biochar. A shallow earth pit was dug in the ground for the carbonisation process. The process is described and the impact of carbonisation on the earth wall is analysed and presented. The process was later re-assessed by using TGA-FTIR. Most of the hemicelluloses had fully disintegrated, but the depolymerisation of the cellulose was still incomplete at the carbonisation temperature. Most of the lignin aromatic structure was still present in the biochar. The carbonisation process was repeated in the laboratory and biochar was characterised by using BET, SEM and FTIR. An adsorption isotherm study was conducted and the experimental data were fitted to the Langmuir model. The model predicted Pb2+ adsorption rates of 83·3 mg/g, Cu2+ 41·4 mg/g, Ni2+ 13·0 mg/g and Zn2+ 19·7 mg/g.

    Description: This paper presents the bed topography of Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, and Byrd Glacier, Antarctica, derived from sounding these glaciers with high-sensitivity radars. To understand the processes causing the speed-up and retreat of outlet glaciers, and to enable the development of next-generation ice-sheet models, we need information on bed topography and basal conditions. To this end, we performed measurements with the progressively improved Multichannel Coherent Radar Depth Sounder/Imager (MCoRDS/I). We processed the data from each antenna-array element using synthetic aperture radar algorithms to improve radar sensitivity and reduce along-track surface clutter. We then applied array and image-processing algorithms to extract the weak bed echoes buried in off-vertical scatter (cross-track surface clutter). At Jakobshavn Isbræ, we observed 2.7 km thick ice ~30 km upstream of the calving front and ~850 m thick ice at the calving front. We also observed echoes from multiple interfaces near the bed. We applied the MUSIC algorithm to the data to derive the direction of arrival of the signals. This analysis revealed that clutter is dominated by the ice surface at Jakobshavn Isbræ. At Byrd Glacier, we found ~3.62 km thick ice, as well as a subglacial trench ~3.05 km below sea level. We used ice thickness information derived from radar data in conjunction with surface elevation data to generate bed maps for these two critical glaciers. The performance of current radars must be improved further by ~15 dB to fully sound the deepest part of Byrd Glacier. Unmanned aerial systems equipped with radars that can be flown over lines spaced as close as 5 m apart in the cross-track direction to synthesize a two-dimensional aperture would be ideal for collecting fine-resolution data over glaciers like Jakobshavn near their grounding lines.

    Description: SUMMARYMaize (Zea mays L.) hybrids with different productivity per unit approximate leaf projected area (ALPA) were compared in China, 1990–92. The results showed that the selection index (SI) values of all the hybrids tested decreased with an increase in population density. Nevertheless, the hybrids with high SI values at low plant densities also had relatively high SI values at high plant densities. Thus, high SI hybrids could be selected at any of these densities. Although no significant yield increase was obtained by using high SI hybrids at plant densities of 52500 plants/ha or lower; significant increases in yield were obtained for high SI hybrids at 〉 67 500 plants/ha. Leaf area was one of the parameters necessary for determining SI, and this could be predicted with a skewed bell-shaped function simply by measuring the length and breadth of the largest leaf and counting the total number of leaves per plant.

    Description: SUMMARYStarch granule size distribution of wheat is an important characteristic that can affect its chemical composition and functionality. Phosphorus (P) fertilization has been studied extensively; however, little is known about its impact on starch granule size distribution in wheat. In the present study, two high-yield winter wheat cultivars were grown under different P fertilization conditions to evaluate its effect on starch granule size distribution and starch components in wheat grains at maturity. P fertilization resulted in a significant increase in the proportions (both by volume and by surface area) of B-type (9·9 μm e.d.) starch granules. The P fertilization also increased starch content, amylose content and amylopectin content at maturity. However, P fertilization conditions significantly reduced the ratio of amylose to amylopectin, which showed a significant positive relationship with the volume proportion of granules 22·8–42·8 μm e.d. but was negatively related to the volume proportion of granules 2·8–9·9 μm e.d.
