    Notizen: Asymptotic expansions occur widely in quantum physics. The Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory for hydrogen in an electrostatic field (the LoSurdo - Stark effect) is one example. The 1/R expansion for the hydrogen molecule ion H+2 is a second. The quantum defect theory and the JWKB method are two more. It is not so widely known that the sum of such real asymptotic expansions may be complex, while the sum of complex asymptotic expansions may be real. The key to this nonintuitive behavior is Borel summation. By examining a simple example related to the exponential integral, the nature of this real-iscomplex, complex-is-real phenomenon is made simple. Then special application is made to derive and clarify the connection formulas (to all orders) in the JWKB method.

    Notizen: A new class of high performance engineering resins, poly(aryl ether ketone)s, has emerged with a property balance not offered by existing polymeric materials. Blends of poly(aryl ether ketone)s with other polymers have not been described in the open literature, although several patents have revealed interesting and important properties of certain blend combinations. Ultem polyetherimide has been found to be miscible over the entire composition range and as a consequence is a very effective heat distortion temperature builder, particularly if the poly(aryl ether ketone) is allowed to crystallize. Crystallization kinetics and mechanical properties were studied as a function of blend composition and poly(aryl ether ketone) melting point. The blends exhibited a maximum in toughness at intermediate compositions along with an accompanying maximum in poly(aryl ether ketone) crystallinity. The chemical resistance of the polyetherimide is significantly improved with the addition of a poly(aryl ether ketone). In organic chemicals, the improvement was expected when tensile stress was plotted vs. log time to rupture. However, in aqueous bases, the resistance of the blends was much greater than anticipated. This property profile suggests that these blends will be useful as thermoplastic composite matrix resins.

    Notizen: Conjugates of polyoxyethylene with proteins and surfaces are of much importance in various biotechnical applications. Consequently, methods for preparing the aldehyde of POE are of interest because of the potential ready attachment of this compound to proteins and aminated surfaces by reductive amination. In this work we describe the results of attempts to prepare an oligomeric POE aldehyde by six routes, two of which proved to be effective. Two previously published routes, manganese-oxide and DMSO/Ac2O oxidation were ineffective. The aldehyde was shown to be unstable in the presence of base and thus of little use for reductive amination. On the other hand, the benzaldehyde derivative, which we also synthesized, is stable, easy to prepare, and undergoes ready reductive amination.

    Notizen: Graft copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on a chitosan backbone (PEG-g-chitosan) have been synthesized and their aqueous solution properties were investigated. At pH 6.5 the graft copolymers are 100% soluble, while chitosan phase separates from solution at those conditions. These interesting graft copolymers may be especially suitable as carriers for delivery of anionic drugs, such as proteins, glycosaminoglycans, and DNA plasmids or oligonucleotides.

    Notizen: One of the remaining problems in the use of CdZnTe material as substrates in liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) of CdxHg1-xTe (CMT) layers is that of variation in lattice matching, i.e. Zn content, across substrates. This wil become increasingly important in the future as larger focal plane arrays of infrared detectors are required. The basic Bridgman growth process for CdTe/Cd0.96Zn0.04Te has been extended by applying the accelerated crucible rotation technique (ACRT). A marked reduction in axial Zn segregtion is seen in 50 mm diameter ACRT material, but this effect is smaller in the case of 75 mm diameter crystals. Radial variations in Zn content are small in both sizes of crystal, demonstrating the benefits obtained from ACRT stirring. Both macro- and microsegregation effects have been studied in these crystals in an attempt to understand the growth mechanism. Zinc distributions have been assessed by near-infrared transmission, X-ray lattice parameter measurements, atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and Auger electron spectrometry (AES). The last technique was used for the microsegregation studies, while AAS provides the absolute calibration for Zn content. Comparisons with segregation behaviour found in the literature will be given. It will be shown that the low temperature gradient and low growth rate lead to a degree of supercooling in the first-to-freeze region and this leads to significant Zn segregation in both radial and axial directions. As the crystals reach full diameter, the radial variation is decreased, presumably by the action of the ACRT, and axial segregation is also reduced.

    Notizen: There is much interest in attaching polyethylene glycol (PEG) and other hydrophilic, neutral polymers to surfaces to reduce the extent of protein and cell adsorption. Interestingly, these same surface-bound polymers are effective in masking surface charge and reducing electrokinetic effects such as particle electrophoretic mobility, streaming potential, and electroosmosis. It is apparent that similar molecular properties are responsible for both protein and cell rejection and reduction of electrokinetic effects. In this work we compared the fibrinogen-rejecting ability and the effect on electrophoretic mobility of three polymer coatings bound to polystyrene. The three polymers were side-bound dextran, end-bound dextran, and end-bound PEG. The results of these measurements were used to elucidate the importance of polymer packing density and polymer layer thickness on protein adsorption and reduction of electrokinetic effects. Protein adsorption appears not to be sensitive to polymer layer thickness or the presence of dilute polymer tails in a surface coating, while electrokinetic effects are. Protein adsorption is, however, very sensitive to the availability of exposed surface. Finally, the unique effectiveness of PEG is apparent in this research as in previous studies. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Pseudo first-order rate constants for the solvolytic displacement of benzyl bromide in 100% ethanol and in 80 and 60% aqueous ethanol (v/v) are reported. The effect of adding poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and PEG dithiols and diamines to the solvolytic solutions has been studied. The solvolytic rates are mildly retarded on adding PEG, MW 950, or PEG dimercaptoacetate, MW 548 or 748 (at a concentration of about 8% of the polymer) to reactions in absolute ethanol. In 80% ethanol, however, a rate acceleration by the polymers was observed, with the thiols exhibiting the largest effects. PEG di(3-mercaptopropionate) reacts slightly faster than the PEG dimercaptoacetates, but liberated acid affects the former's reaction. Three molecular weights of primary diamines structurally derived from propylene oxide-capped PEG were evaluated and found to increase solvolytic rates of benzyl bromide significantly. Kinetic evaluation and comparisons with reactions containing equivalent amine groups per gram in an appropriate model (ethanolamine) revealed that the polymer's amine groups are actively involved nucleophilically. Grunwald-Winstein plots and second-order rate constants revealed that the polymeric diamines caused the benzyl bromide to undergo polymer-assisted displacement in all solvent compositions. Since it was noted that the second-order rates increased as the PEG amine molecular weight increased, it appears that the PEG framework may be assisting the reaction.
