    Description / Table of Contents: In 1978, the USGS began the preparation of the 11-chapter USGS Professional Paper 1386, "Satellite Image Atlas of Glaciers of the World." Between 1979 and 1981, optimum satellite images were distributed to a team of 70 scientists, representing 25 nations and 45 institutions, who agreed to author sections of the Professional Paper concerning either a geographic area (chapters B-K) or a glaciological topic (included in Chapter A). The scientists used Landsat 1, 2, and 3 multispectral scanner (MSS) images and Landsat 2 and 3 return beam vidicon (RBV) images to inventory the areal occurrence of glacier ice on our planet within the boundaries of the spacecrafts' coverage (between about 82º north and south latitudes). Some later contributors also used Landsat 4 and 5 MSS and Thematic Mapper, Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper-Plus (ETM+), and other satellite images. In addition to analyzing images of a specific geographic area, each author was asked to summarize up-to-date information about the glaciers within each area and compare their present-day areal distribution with reliable historical information (from published maps, reports, and photographs) about their past extent. Because of the limitations of Landsat images for delineating or monitoring small glaciers in some geographic areas (the result of inadequate spatial resolution, lack of suitable seasonal coverage, or absence of coverage), some information on the areal distribution of small glaciers was derived from ancillary sources, including other satellite images. Completion of the atlas will provide an accurate regional inventory of the areal extent of glaciers on our planet during a relatively narrow time interval (1972-1981).

    Description / Table of Contents: This chapter is the ninth to be released in U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1386, Satellite Image Atlas of Glaciers of the World, a series of 11 chapters. In each of the geographic area chapters, remotely sensed images, primarily from the Landsat 1, 2, and 3 series of spacecraft, are used to analyze the specific glacierized region of our planet under consideration and to monitor glacier changes. Landsat images, acquired primarily during the middle to late 1970s and early 1980s, were used by an international team of glaciologists and other scientists to study various geographic regions and (or) to discuss related glaciological topics. In each glacierized geographic region, the present areal distribution of glaciers is compared, wherever possible, with historical information about their past extent. The atlas provides an accurate regional inventory of the areal extent of glacier ice on our planet during the 1970s as part of a growing international scientific effort to measure global environmental change on the Earth's surface.The chapter is divided into seven geographic parts and one topical part: Glaciers of the Former Soviet Union (F-1), Glaciers of China (F-2), Glaciers of Afghanistan (F-3), Glaciers of Pakistan (F-4), Glaciers of India (F-5), Glaciers of Nepal (F-6), Glaciers of Bhutan (F-7), and the Paleoenvironmental Record Preserved in Middle-Latitude, High-Mountain Glaciers (F-8). Each geographic section describes the glacier extent during the 1970s and 1980s, the benchmark time period (1972-1981) of this volume, but has been updated to include more recent information.

    Description: Mean, clear-sky surface temperature of the Greenland Ice Sheet was measured for each melt season from 2000 to 2005 using Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)–derived land-surface temperature (LST) data-product maps. During the period of most-active melt, the mean, clear-sky surface temperature of the ice sheet was highest in 2002 (−8.29 ± 5.29°C) and 2005 (−8.29 ± 5.43°C), compared to a 6-year mean of −9.04 ± 5.59°C, in agreement with recent work by other investigators showing unusually extensive melt in 2002 and 2005. Surface-temperature variability shows a correspondence with the dry-snow facies of the ice sheet; a reduction in area of the dry-snow facies would indicate a more-negative mass balance. Surface-temperature variability generally increased during the study period and is most pronounced in the 2005 melt season; this is consistent with surface instability caused by air-temperature fluctuations.

    Description: A daily time series of 'clear-sky' surface temperature has been compiled of the Greenland ice sheet (GIS) using 1 km resolution moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) land-surface temperature (LST) maps from 2000 to 2006. We also used mass-concentration data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) to study mass change in relationship to surface melt from 2003 to 2006. The mean LST of the GIS increased during the study period by ∼0.27°C a−1. The increase was especially notable in the northern half of the ice sheet during the winter months. Melt-season length and timing were also studied in each of the six major drainage basins. Rapid (〈15 days) and sustained mass loss below 2000 m elevation was triggered in 2004 and 2005 as recorded by GRACE when surface melt begins. Initiation of large-scale surface melt was followed rapidly by mass loss. This indicates that surface meltwater is flowing rapidly to the base of the ice sheet, causing acceleration of outlet glaciers, thus highlighting the metastability of parts of the GIS and the vulnerability of the ice sheet to air-temperature increases. If air temperatures continue to rise over Greenland, increased surface melt will play a large role in ice-sheet mass loss.

    Description: Iceland’s largest ice cap, Vatnajökull, has been the test site for a series of airborne and satellite remote-sensing studies since 1966. Various types of image data acquired by the Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) and the Seasat Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) are assessed for their value to glaciological studies of Vatnajökull. A low Sun angle winter 1973 MSS band 7 Landsat image of Vatnajökull provides information about the distribution and size of subglacial volcanic calderas, cauldron subsidence caused by subglacial geothermal and (or) intrusive volcanic activity, and delineation of the probable position of surface ice divides. Two types of multi-spectral digital enhancements were applied to a late summer 1973 MSS image of Vatnajökull. The first type was used to prepare a planimetric base map showing the location of the principal surface features and an inventory of 38 named outlet glaciers, one internal ice cap (Öraefajökull), and two detached glaciers which comprise this complex ice cap, and to measure its area (8300 km2). The second type provides information about the position of the snow line at the approximate end of the 1973 melt season, the areas encompassed by the ice fades of the ablation area and the slush zone and wet-snow facies/percolation facies of the accumulation area. More information about the surface morphology of Vatnajökull was available from the Sow Sun angle winter and the digitally enhanced summer Landsat image of the ice cap than from the Seasat SAR image.
