    Notes: Cosmetic creams were analyzed for their content of jojoba wax and shea fat using anticircular HPTLC, a fast, precise, and reliable method. After optimization of the solvent system (petrol ether/diethyl ether) for the separation of jojoba wax and shea fat, the spots were visualized with phosphomolybdic acid by the “dip-in” technique, subsequently heated, and finally recorded by scanning with a densitometer at 546 nm. Results showed that one particular concentration range gives an optimum correlation between calibration curves and sample evaluations.

    Notes: A preparative anticircular chromatography (PACH) device was constructed to elucidate different applications of separation problems as well as to compare different sample collection techniques in this particular PLC mode. An anticircular PC apparatus had to be established which allowed the utilization of 20 X 20 cm thin-layer plates as well as sampling positioning at any given radius. Typical solvent migration times were 8-12 minutes and ca. 8-10 ml of solvent was needed for an entire 20 cm plate. It was shown that peak broadening effects due to diffusion during long migration could be avoided in the same way as for analytical anticircular PLC on 10 X 10 plates. On the other hand, longer migration distances allow increased resolution, in turn allowing higher sample loads, particularly in the case of trace compound enrichment. A full description of the apparatus is given, including the sampling device.Different sample collection techniques were tried and evaluated, including the through-flow technique by on-line center collection for plate washing as well as classical scraping-off of interesting zones. Further evaluation of the method included quantification and evaluation of consistency by UV/VIS scanning after spot-visualization. Several application examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of the preparative anticircular PLC-system.

    Description: A small compact magnetic bearing design developed and tested features a bearing capable of supporting over ten times its own weight, dimensioned 8 cm diam by 3.75 cm, with rare-earth cobalt magnets. Only 1% of the device payload figures as part of the magnetic suspension. The design is servoed in two axes and exhibits inherent stability in three more degrees of freedom, with full rotational freedom in the desired axis. Capacitive radial gap sensing allows stiff servoing of the rotation axis. Differential sensing and EM control linearize control functions. Low power drain, simple fabrication and assembly, and larger clearances than in air bearings or ball bearings are reported

    Description: Magnetic suspension technology has advanced to the point of being able to offer a number of advantages to a variety of applications in the rotating machinery and aerospace fields. One strong advantage is the decrease in power consumption. The design and construction of a set of permanent magnet biased, actively controlled magnetic bearing for a flexible rotor are presented. Both permanent magnets and electromagnets are used in a configuration which effectively provides the necessary fluxes in the appropriate air gaps, while simultaneously keeping the undesirable destabilizing forces to a minimum. The design includes two radial bearings and a thrust bearing. The theoretical development behind the design is briefly discussed. Experimental performance results for a set of operating prototype bearings is presented. The results include measurements of load capacity, bearing stiffness and damping, and the dynamic response of the rotor. With few exceptions, the experimental results matched very well with the predicted performance. The power consumption of these bearings was found to be significantly reduced from that for a comparable set of all electromagnetic bearings.

    Description: A plurality of identical modules are serially connected together with each module including a base plate and a top plate interconnected by a ball joint assembly so that the top plate is adapted to pivotally nutate around the base plate to describe a cone in space. An array of twenty-four electromagnets, sequentially energized in sets of three, are arranged in a ring around the periphery of the base plate. Selective energization of the eight sets of electromagnets causes the rim of the top plate to be magnetically attracted to the energized electromagnets. The tilt of the top pivot plate is detected and controlled over a range of 360 degrees, thus permitting a series string of modules to assume any desired elongated configuration.

    Description: This paper presents the system considerations of a magnetically suspended energy storage system. The key technologies for system success are presented in a technology flowchart. The key areas identified and discussed include: the active bearing control system, the back-up touchdown bearings, and the flywheel dynamic performance and balancing. Two possible hardware designs are described which have been identified as having characteristics suitable for energy storage in low earth orbit spacecraft. Finally, a matrix of the key technologies versus the various prototype designs is presented to show the current progress of inertial energy storage, and to show the direction of future work.
