Notes: Abstract Suppose that the family of evolution equationsdu/dt+Au+f N (u)=0 possesses inertial manifolds of the same dimension for a sequence of nonlinear termsf N withf N →f in the C0 norm. Conditions are found to ensure that the limiting equationdu/dt+Au+f(u)=0 also possesses an inertial manifold. There are two cases. The first, where the manifolds for the family have a bounded Lipschitz constant, is straightforward and leads to an interesting result on inertial manifolds for Bubnov-Galerkin approximations. When the Lipschitz constant is unbounded, it is still possible to prove the existence of an exponential attractor of finite Hausdorff dimension for the limiting equation. This more general result is applied to a problem in approximate inertial manifold theory discussed by Sell (1993).

Notes: Abstract A mathematical model has been developed to predict the theoretical limiting H2S removal efficiency of an electrochemical membrane separator (EMS) in the presence of overwhelming levels of H2O and CO2 (as would be found in syn-gas). Thermodynamic principles gave the minimum potential requirements for cell operation. Factors including electrokinetics, mass transfer, chemical equilibria and internal resistance, occuring with application of current, were incorporated into the prediction. Theoretical predictions, which represent a limiting value, show achievable current efficiencies close to 100% for high H2S levels (1000ppm) at 90% removal. At this same removal level with 100 or 10ppm inlet gas, the predicted maximum current efficiencies dropped, due to concentration effects, to 93% and 40%, respectively. This solidifies the economic importance of obtaining close to 100% current efficiencies at sour gas levels compared to polishing applications where the removal, not the current efficiency, is more important. Predicted cell potentials were consistently in the same range, −0.450 to −0.550V, for all concentration levels at 90% removal. Comparison with experimental data gave good agreement; actual current efficiencies were consistently within 15% of the maximum predicted values at coinciding removal levels. However, actual potentials were lower (less negative) because of hydrogen leakage through the cell membrane. While lower potentials require less power, sulfur production at the anode was reduced.

Notes: Summary The ability of dog renal cortex slices to accumulate β-methyl-glucoside or glycine is enhanced by the flavonoid (+)-catechin at a concentration of 3.5 mM. This stimulatory effect is apparently due to a decreased rate of efflux of either substrate. On the other hand, the uptake of p-amino-hippuric acid and N1-methyl-nicotinamide is inhibited by (+)-catechin. The drug at the same concentration is without action on amino-acid transport by guineapig intestine in vitro.

Notes: Summary The changes in short-circuit current occurring when one or both solutions bathing the intestine of rat or guinea-pig mounted in flux chambers were recorded. The results with the guinea-pig can be explained in terms of diffusion potentials arising from the ionic replacements, and an electrogenic sodium pump, sensitive to ouabain, in the contraluminal membrane of the cell. In the rat, the situation is more complicated, and the enterocyte probably possesses an electrogenic sodium pump in the brush-border membrane.

Notes: Abstract The existence of endosymbiotic sulfur-oxidizing chemoautotrophic and methanotrophic bacteria associating with marine mytilid mussels has previously been inferred by 16S rDNA analysis in Bathymodiolus puteoserpentis Von Cosel et al. 1994, a hydrothermal vent mussel from a site on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. In mussels collected in June 1993, we found evidence of enzymes diagnostic of two distinct C1 assimilation pathways in this symbiosis. Assays for the utilization of radiolabelled methane and for immunodetection of methanol dehydrogenase were positive, indicating that oxidation and incorporation of this substrate are occurring in this symbiosis. Sulfide or thiosulfate had no detectable stimulatory effect on CO2 incorporation, and assays for the enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO), an enzyme diagnostic for the Calvin–Benson cycle, were negative. RubisCO was detected in all samples examined by immunoblot analysis, indicating this enzyme is expressed in the B. puteoserpentis symbiosis. Stable isotope data showed that carbon isotope values were in agreement with previously reported values, and nitrogen isotope values were among the most depleted ever reported for bivalve symbioses. The carbon isotope values do not preclude the utilization of vent-derived methane. These data could be explained by the presence of two metabolically distinct bacterial symbionts or a Type X methanotrophic symbiont.

Notes: Summary Purified filtrate tetanus toxin was subjected to limited digestion with papain and the resulting fragments were separated by gel exclusion chromatography and characterized. One atoxic fragment was shown to react with antiserum against tetanus toxoid and was capable of inducing antibodies in rabbits that neutralized native tetanus toxin. The fragment had an estimated molecular weight of 56,000 by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and 62,000 by sedimentation equilibrium. In the presence of a reducing agent, the fragment yielded two components with approximatec molecular weights of 23,000 and 32,000. Thus, it appears that the atoxic, immunogenic fragment is composed of two peptides joined by at least one disulfide bond. The fragment was examined by circular dichroism and data analysis indicated the presence of considerable β-structure, but little, if any, α-helicity. This is significantly different from the estimates for filtrate toxin, 29% α-helicity and 23% β-structure. Above 250 nm, the circular dichroic spectrum of the fragment was also distinct from that of intact toxin.

Notes: Summary Peripheral white blood cells have been shown to bind serum immunoglobins when prepared in low ionic strength sucrose solutions. The presence and distribution of Ig on neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes was described using an immunoferritin probe and the electron microscope. It appears that this approach reveals immunoglobulins associated with peripheral white blood cells that are not observed by the usual methods of examining these cell surfaces after preparation at physiological ionic strength.

Notes: Abstract A method is described whereby values of crack tip opening displacement (COD) can be measured at any section of a pre-cracked or slotted specimen. The relationship between COD and the degree of transverse strain at the notch root of a Charpy specimen has been investigated. A specimen will show some portion in plane strain up to a COD of about one twenty-fifth of the thickness. Transverse contraction results in smaller COD values, for a particular clip gauge displacement, at the outside than at the specimen midsection. An equation is presented relating COD to longitudinal notch root strain for Charpy specimens with root radius 0.002 in. COD and notch root strain are found to be not directly proportional. This finding is discussed in relation to the concept of a “miniature tensile specimen” at the notch root. The effect of specimen geometry on the value of COD at fracture initiation, (COD)c, has been investigated. Neither a change in specimen thickness nor a change from a fatigue pre-crack to a 0.002 in. root radius notch has been found to significantly affect (COD)c. The material used in this research was, for the most part, a low alloy pressure vessel steel, A533B.
