Notizen: A new apparatus to measure partition coefficients Ks∞ at infinite dilution up to 200 105 Pa and 423 K is described. Measurements of the systems: (1) methane-ethane-n-decane and methane-propane-n-decane at 294.25 K; and (2) methane-n-butane-n-decane at 344.25 K illustrate the reproducibility and good agreement with literature data. In addition, new data were obtained for the system methane-n-pentane-n-decane at 344.25 K up to 101 105 Pa.

Notizen: A model is derived for solids mixing and material transport in a continucus flow rotary dryer or reactor. Detailed analysis of the particle motions in the turnover process provides an opportunity to apply well-known reactor models to several subregions and to relate the overall results to different design geometries and operating conditions. The essential parameters of the model are the number of stages, the volume fractions of mixed flow and plug flow in each stage, the recycle ratio and the bypass ratio.

Notizen: A series of seven coals were oxidized in a fixed bed reactor to determine the controlling reaction regimes during mild coal oxidation. The effects of coal porosity and particle size, reactor temperature, and oxygen partial pressure were evaluated. The results show that coal-oxygen reactions are controlled by the rate of internal gaseous diffusion for most coals, and by the rate of chemical reaction for the most porous coal of the set tested. Particle size effects also suggest internal diffusional control. Determinations of cumulative oxygen deposition indicate that surface areas several orders of magnitude greater than the superficial surface can participate in oxidation reactions, putting in doubt the applicability of the model previously derived by Kam et al. (1976a) for external mass transfer control.

Notizen: A general equation is derived that predicts the evolution of pore volume distribution during isothermal gasification in the regime of kinetic control, starting from a given initial condition. The development takes into account pore enlargement as well as pore intersections. Equations are also derived for the special cases of (1) uniform pore size and (2) bimodal distribution. The results are used to interpret the experimental data of Tomkow et al. (1977) and Kawahata and Walker (1962).

Notizen: The effects on the fine-crystal CSD of various surface active and ionic additives were studied for the sodium tetraborate decahydrate (borax) system. The organic modifiers used were effective at the ppm level. Surface active agents inhibited nucleation rate, while ionic additives increased nucleation. A simultaneous reduction in both the linear-crystal growth rate and the degree of polycrystalline growth was observed in both cases. These effects correlated with modifier concentration in the liquor, but not with modifier/solids ratio. Borax exhibits classical magma and RPM-dependent secondary nucleation and the results were well-correlated with a conventional power-law kinetic model.

Notizen: A series of seven coals of different ranks and from various locations were heated in an inert atmosphere under relatively mild conditions to measure the rates of gas evaporation. Samples crushed to various fractions in the particle size range -6+50 U.S. mesh were studied at temperatures in the range of 150 to 300°C. The results show that: (1) most water is released at 100°C, evidently an evaporation process, (2) CO2 is evolved at 150°C and above, and (3) CO is evolved at 250°C and above. An interpretive model was developed to fit the CO2 production rate and kinetic constants were obtained. Gas evolution rates are independent of particle size for the most porous coals, but vary among coals, depending on both chemical composition and physical structure. A 15% loss in heating value was incurred during drying and subsequent oxidation when the pretreatment temperature was increased from 150 to 225°C.
