    Notes: The subsurface structure of Vickers indents in soda–lime–silica glass was investigated using confocal microscopy and conventional microscopy. It was determined that the lateral cracks that form beneath the indentation site propagate away from the surface. The median/radial (MR) crack system was found to be semielliptical in shape. The growth of the lateral and MR cracks was found to be codependent such that the depth of the lateral crack limited the depth of the MR crack, and the presence of the MR crack caused deflections in the direction and increased the extent of lateral crack growth.

    Notes: The challenges in understanding hypersonic flight are discussed and critical hypersonic aerothermodynamics issues are reviewed. The ability of current analytical methods, numerical methods, ground testing capabilities, and flight testing approaches to predict hypersonic flow are evaluated. The areas where aerothermodynamic shortcomings restrict our ability to design and analyze hypersonic vehicles are discussed, and prospects for future capabilities are reviewed. Considerable work still needs to be done before our understanding of hypersonic flow will allow for the accurate prediction of vehicle flight characteristics throughout the flight envelope from launch to orbital insertion.

    Notes: The strategic integration of rapid prototyping and rapid tooling is being used for getting product to the market quickly by resolving a long-standing conflict between design and manufacturing. Currently rapid tooling can be produced at such reduced cost and time that the tool is considered to be disposable. The ability to produce inexpensive tooling allows the life cycle to be fundamentally changed, incorporating the concept and tooling review into one development phase and allowing both design and manufacturing requirements to be identified. This approach has allowed management to release product based on competitive market strategy rather than an estimated deadline.

    Notes: Chromium, an EPA listed toxic element concentrated in many industrial wastes, was stabilized using waste vitrification. Cr2O3 and CrO3 were loaded into a simulated basaltic base composition, vitrified, and cooled at various rates. Chromium incorporation mechanisms, vitrification processability, effect of initial Cr oxidation state, and product performance were investigated. At 1500°C, Cr2O3 has a low solubility limit (0.54 wt%) in the base composition, and crystallized as Cr-rich primary spinel (Mg,Fe)(Fe,Al,Cr)2O4. On cooling, Cr-depleted secondary spinel and augite (Na,Ca)(Mg,Fe2+,Al)(Si,Al)2O6 crystallized. Cr(VI) was converted into Cr(III) on vitrification. The apparent viscosity of the melts was estimated using the Bottinga–Weill model as corrected by Roscoe's equation. The end products showed Cr2O3 loading capacities as high as 16.7 wt% without exceeding the toxicity-leaching limit defined by EPA. The annealed products had Vickers's hardness of about 800 kg·F/mm2 and can be classified as medium-grade abrasives.

    Notes: Computer-assisted design of experiments based on the D-optimal design methodology and multiple linear regression analysis has been applied to the control and optimization of solar-control properties of a sulfate-fined soda–lime–silicate glass (72.7% SiO2, 14.2% Na2O, 10.0% CaO, 2.5% MgO, 0.6% Al2O3) which has been modified with Fe2O3 (0.0 to 0.8 wt%), NiO (0.0 to 0.15 wt%), CoO (0.0 to 0.15 wt%), V2O5 (0.0 to 0.225 wt%), TiO2 (0.0 to 1.5 wt%), SnO (0.0 to 3.0 wt%), ZnS (0.0 to 0.09 wt%), ZnO (0.0 to 2.0 wt.), CaF2 (0.0 to 2.0 wt%), and P2O5 (0.0 to 2.0 wt%) additions. The experimental design consisted of 64 initial glass compositions which were fired as 500 g batches under ambient conditions in platinum crucibles at 1500°C for 3 h. The samples were then measured for total solar transmittance in accordance with the specifications of ASTM E903–96 (weighted ordinate method) using a Cary-500 UV/vis/near-IR spectrophotometer equipped with an integrating sphere. CIE-LAB color and visible transmittance (illuminant-A) was measured in accordance with the specification of ASTM E308. The total metal content, calculated as of V2O5, CoO, NiO, Fe2O3, FeO, P2O5, TiO2, SnO, ZnO, F, and SO3, was measured for each glass sample. A modified Lambert–Beer absorption law was utilized to correlate the apparent optical density at 210 discrete wavelengths necessary for the calculation of solar and visible transmittances to the glass batch composition. The developed model was then validated and was shown to exhibit excellent agreement with the measured optical transmission data. Innovative solar-control glasses with exceptional performance characteristics have been realized in the current investigation by application of novel computer-assisted design and multiple correlation methodologies.

    Notes: Ceramic-matrix composites are being developed to operate at elevated temperatures and in oxidizing environments. Considerable improvements have been made in the creep resistance of SiC fibers and, hence, in the high-temperature properties of SiC fiber/SiC (SiCf/SiC) composites; however, more must be known about the stability of these materials in oxidizing environments before they are widely accepted. Experimental weight change and crack growth data support the conclusion that the oxygen-enhanced crack growth of SiCf/SiC occurs by more than one mechanism, depending on the experimental conditions. These data suggest an oxidation embrittlement mechanism (OEM) at temperatures 〈1373 K and high oxygen pressures and an interphase removal mechanism (IRM) at temperatures of ≳700 K and low oxygen pressures. The OEM results from the reaction of oxygen with SiC to form a glass layer on the fiber or within the fiber–matrix interphase region. The fracture stress of the fiber is decreased if this layer is thicker than a critical value (d 〉 dc) and the temperature below a critical value (T 〈 Tg), such that a sharp crack can be sustained in the layer. The IRM results from the oxidation of the interfacial layer and the resulting decrease of stress that is carried by the bridging fibers. Interphase removal contributes to subcritical crack growth by decreasing the fiber-bridging stresses and, hence, increasing the crack-tip stress. The IRM occurs over a wide range of temperatures for d 〈 dc and may occur at T 〉 Tg for d 〉 dc. This paper summarizes the evidence for the existence of these two mechanisms and attempts to define the conditions for their operation.

    Notes: Perovskite-type BaCeO3 has been investigated to study the effects of preparation method and cation doping on the particle size and sintering in the fabrication of dense perovskite membranes. A variety of preparation methods including solid-state reactions, coprecipitation, microemulsion, and molten salt reactions have been studied. In coprecipitation and microemulsion preparations, perovskites were formed at significantly lower temperatures than that required in a solid-state preparation. The pH of the reactant solutions has been found to greatly affect the particle size and agglomeration of BaCeO3 perovskites. Smallest perovskite particles with sizes of 40–60 nm were obtained by the microemulsion preparation with minimal agglomeration. Transition metal dopants such as neodymium and manganese cations were doped into BaCeO3 and their effects on the particle size and agglomeration of perovskite particles investigated. Both small particle size and cation doping significantly helped the sintering of perovskites.

    Notes: A novel technique for measuring interphase recession in ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) due to oxidation is described. The technique involves fiber push-in testing and analysis of the load–displacement curves. Fiber push-in tests were conducted on carbon-coated Hi-Nicalon SiC fibers in a CVI SiC matrix, where the carbon interphase had recessed due to oxidation. Estimates of interphase recession distances from analysis of fiber push-in tests are in reasonable agreement with measurements made by optical microscopy. Besides measuring the recession distance, the fiber push-in test can be used to investigate environmental effects on fiber bridging.

    Notes: With the high level of outsourcing in aerospace engineering and manufacture, the effective use of knowledge across the supply chain is acknowledged to be crucial to the success of any projects. "Knowledge", however, may have different meanings and context. Presents a view of the supplier knowledge in relation to the product engineering process. The different types of supplier knowledge in the five key stages of the aerospace product development process are explained. An existing joint supplier improvement information system is used to illustrate best practice in supply-base management. Tools that could be used in the different modes of supplier involvement are briefly introduced. Represents part of the results of three industrial research projects that interacted with the supply bases of two large British aerospace companies.

    Notes: Abstract This paper introduces a strategy for the construction of object-oriented knowledge frameworks. Global control programs, which are traditionally used for manipulating structured representations, have been replaced by domain-specific resources. This new approach offers increased efficiency and simplified development of knowledge-based expert systems for problem domains that deal with a variety of complex structured information. A theoretical foundation is laid for the representation of knowledge, starting with the adoption of a simple schema for structuring stereotypical information. Data and method abstraction is achieved by installing knowledge frames into part of an object-oriented class system that supports procedural attachment and object communication. This allows frame specialization using domain-specific resources and subsequent construction of modular systems with these specialist frames. Editors are introduced for the alteration of data primitives used in declarative representation. Algorithms, which operate on these data primitives, are given for frame instantiation, data access, and user-directed inference. Examples from structural engineering are used throughout the paper to illustrate the practical application of object-oriented knowledge frameworks.
