    Description: Background Microarrays were first developed to assess gene expression but are now also used to map protein-binding sites and to assess allelic variation between individuals. Regardless of the intended application, efficient production and appropriate array design are key determinants of experimental success. Inefficient production can make larger-scale studies prohibitively expensive, whereas poor array design makes normalisation and data analysis problematic. Results We have developed a user-friendly tool, SimArray, which generates a randomised spot layout, computes a maximum meta-grid area, and estimates the print time, in response to user-specified design decisions. Selected parameters include: the number of probes to be printed; the microtitre plate format; the printing pin configuration, and the achievable spot density. SimArray is compatible with all current robotic spotters that employ 96-, 384- or 1536-well microtitre plates, and can be configured to reflect most production environments. Print time and maximum meta-grid area estimates facilitate evaluation of each array design for its suitability. Randomisation of the spot layout facilitates correction of systematic biases by normalisation. Conclusion SimArray is intended to help both established researchers and those new to the microarray field to develop microarray designs with randomised spot layouts that are compatible with their specific production environment.     Notes: Neural network topology selection refers to a systematic procedure for selecting between competing models. Naturally, it is regarded as a key aspect in optimisation and replicability of neural network performance. When constructing neural network topologies, it is necessary to determine from the outset the general taxonomy of the neural network architectures to be constructed. The taxonomy considered in this study is the general taxonomy of time-varying patterns which subsumes many existing architectures in the literature and points to several promising neural network architectures that have yet to be examined. The context of the problem is that choosing the right neural network topology for use in a particular domain such as corporate bankruptcy prediction with optimum generalisation performance is not, in any case, a trivial problem. The results of experiments presented in this paper would serve as a baseline against which to select between two competing architectures.

    Notes: Researchers frequently come across teachers who distrust a learning environment as embodying the beliefs of the designers and not their own pedagogy. Following the lead provided by user modelling work carried out in the field of human-computer interaction, there has been much research on student modelling and adaptivity to individual learners; however, the role of the teacher as the manager of the learning process and hence a much more significant user of a learning environment has been ignored. This paper discusses the need for a human teacher model in any computer-based learning environment and recommends configurable, incremental and re-structurable contributive learning environments (CIRCLE) architecture to ensure wider acceptance and greater reuse of the phenomenal creative effort that goes into designing a good learning environment.

    Notes: The literature indicates that JIT has been successful as an inventory reduction tool. JIT systems do not, however, automatically increase profit, because the benefits from JIT adoption may be offset by the associated direct and indirect costs of implementation such as training, capital expenditures for reengineering, increased shipping costs, and the mechanics of the absorption costing process. Explores the trends of financial performance as indicated by accounting metrics and the magnitude of change in that performance. Seven commonly used financial ratios were studied covering a period from 1990 through 1999 for companies identified as having adopted the JIT philosophy. It is concluded that JIT effects positive trends in the shorter-term financial measures. It is not clear how deeply entrenched in the US manufacturing strategy, as a whole, JIT practices will need to be deployed before shareholders will feel a significant effect.

    Notes: Abstract This paper introduces a strategy for the construction of object-oriented knowledge frameworks. Global control programs, which are traditionally used for manipulating structured representations, have been replaced by domain-specific resources. This new approach offers increased efficiency and simplified development of knowledge-based expert systems for problem domains that deal with a variety of complex structured information. A theoretical foundation is laid for the representation of knowledge, starting with the adoption of a simple schema for structuring stereotypical information. Data and method abstraction is achieved by installing knowledge frames into part of an object-oriented class system that supports procedural attachment and object communication. This allows frame specialization using domain-specific resources and subsequent construction of modular systems with these specialist frames. Editors are introduced for the alteration of data primitives used in declarative representation. Algorithms, which operate on these data primitives, are given for frame instantiation, data access, and user-directed inference. Examples from structural engineering are used throughout the paper to illustrate the practical application of object-oriented knowledge frameworks.

    Notes: Abstract. The traditional studies of multi-prover interactive proof systems have concentrated on cooperating provers. These are systems in which a verifier interacts with a set of provers who collaborate in their attempt to convince the verifier that a word $ \omega $ is in a prespecified language L. Results on probabilistically checkable proofs coupled with parallel repetition techniques characterize NP in terms of multi-prover proof systems: languages in NP can be verified through a one-round interaction with two cooperating provers using limited randomness and communication.¶Less attention has been paid to the study of competition in this complexity-theoretic setting of interactive proof systems. We consider, for example, one-round proof systems where the first prover is trying to convince the verifier to accept and the second prover is trying to convince the verifier to reject. We build into these proof systems a (crucial) asymmetry between the provers, analogous to quantifier alternation. We show that such proof systems capture, with restrictions on communication and randomness, languages in NP. We generalize this model by defining alternating prover proof systems which we show characterize each level of the polynomial hierarchy. Alternating oracle proof systems are also examined.¶The main contribution of this work is the first exact characterization of the polynomial hierarchy in terms of interactive (prover) proof systems.
