Description: Dicer-2 is the central player for small interfering RNA biogenesis in the Drosophila RNA interference (RNAi) pathway. Intriguingly, we found that Dicer-2 has an unconventional RNAi-independent function that positively modulates Toll immune signaling, which defends against Gram-positive bacteria, fungi, and some viruses, in both cells and adult flies. The loss of Dicer-2 expression makes fruit flies more susceptible to fungal infection. We further revealed that Dicer-2 posttranscriptionally modulates Toll signaling because Dicer-2 is required for the proper expression of Toll protein but not for Toll protein stability or Toll mRNA transcription. Moreover, Dicer-2 directly binds to the 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) of Toll mRNA via its PAZ (Piwi/Argonaute/Zwille) domain and is required for protein translation mediated by Toll 3'UTR. The loss of Toll 3'UTR binding activity makes Dicer-2 incapable of promoting Toll signaling. These data indicate that the interaction between Dicer-2 and Toll mRNA plays a pivotal role in Toll immune signaling. In addition, we found that Dicer-2 is also required for the Toll signaling induced by two different RNA viruses in Drosophila cells. Consequently, our findings uncover a novel RNAi-independent function of Dicer-2 in the posttranscriptional regulation of Toll protein expression and signaling, indicate an unexpected intersection of the RNAi pathway and the Toll pathway, and provide new insights into Toll immune signaling, Drosophila Dicer-2, and probably Dicer and Dicer-related proteins in other organisms.

Description: Variations in environmental and biological origins contributing to the heterogeneity of lacustrine source rocks can be illustrated in their diverse genetic facies. The Zhu 1 depression, eastern Pearl River Mouth Basin, South China Sea, is characterized by two thick, Paleogene, organic-rich synrift units, the Wenchang and Enping Formations. The integration of bulk geochemical and biomarker data with tectonic and sedimentary information provides the basis for a comprehensive assessment of the environmental and ecological changes through geologic time and their impact on the heterogeneity of these lacustrine source rocks. Both the Wenchang and Enping Formations display wide variations in total organic carbon content and hydrogen index values as well as biomarker composition, suggesting lateral and chronological changes in organic facies. Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and hierarchical cluster analysis, five genetic facies were identified within these two source horizons. These facies represent different organic-matter inputs and sedimentary and early diagenetic environments based on their distinctly different assemblages of 11 source-dependent biomarker ratios. Four facies were distinguished in the Wenchang Formation, and two facies were distinguished in the Enping Formation, with one being common to both formations. During the middle Eocene, the Wenchang Formation was deposited in a series of small, deep lakes of laterally variable salinity, acidity, and biofacies. During the deposition of the Enping Formation in the late Eocene and early Oligocene, the previous lakes merged into fewer lakes with shallower depth and larger areal coverage, with the biota becoming more uniform across the whole depression. The coevolution of these lacustrine settings and their biota is closely associated with the development of the Zhu 1 depression, within which multiple separate sags produced by rapid mid-Eocene subsidence finally merged into a single depositional unit during slow subsidence in the late Eocene and early Oligocene. Accordingly, an integrated model was established to provide an overview of the contrasting origins of lacustrine source rocks during the two Paleogene epochs. This model may have important implications for source-rock prediction in the undrilled parts of the basins or for reference to source-rock heterogeneity in other rift basins.

Description: This paper presents a flexible tactile sensor, which uses a novel structure and effective decoupling method to detect multi-point three-dimensional touch force. Firstly, the structure characteristics of the sensor are introduced. According to the theories of force-sensitive conductive rubber, the relationship between the resistance and the force exerted on the sensor is analyzed. Furthermore the mathematical model of the sensor based on finite element method is conducted. The simulation result is consistent well with the theory result. Then a decoupling method based on the RBF neural network is proposed in order to obtain the force from the resistance. The research indicates that the flexible tactile sensor with the novel structure and the decoupling method can accurately detect the three-dimensional force.

Description: Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have witnessed rapidly rising power conversion efficiencies, together with advances in stability and upscaling. Despite these advances, their limited stability and need to prove upscaling remain crucial hurdles on the path to commercialization. We summarize recent advances toward commercially viable PSCs and discuss challenges that remain. We expound the development of standardized protocols to distinguish intrinsic and extrinsic degradation factors in perovskites. We review accelerated aging tests in both cells and modules and discuss the prediction of lifetimes on the basis of degradation kinetics. Mature photovoltaic solutions, which have demonstrated excellent long-term stability in field applications, offer the perovskite community valuable insights into clearing the hurdles to commercialization.

Description: Iron isotopic fractionation between silicate mantle and metallic core at high pressure Nature Communications, Published online: 20 February 2017; doi:10.1038/ncomms14377 Terrestrial basalts have a unique iron isotopic signature taken as fingerprints of core formation. Here, high pressure studies show that force constants of iron bonds increase with pressure similarly for silicate and metals suggesting interplanetary isotopic variability is not due to core formation.

Description: An appropriate network model and some suitable performance evaluation criterions including handoff delay and mobility management cost were proposed in this paper. And in this base the performance of Mobile IP protocol and various micromobility protocols was comprehensively compared and investigated. The research results show that the performance is mainly influenced by two factors which are route update methods of mobility support protocols and mobile network parameters. The route update time and mobility management cost of micromobility protocol are obviously shorter than that of Mobile IP. In all researched micromobility protocols, the route update method of Mobile IP Regional Registration protocol has the optimal performance.

Description: The pressure-induced amorphization and subsequent recrystallization of SnI 4 have been investigated using first principles molecular dynamics calculations together with high-pressure 119 Sn nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements. Above ∼8 GPa, we observe a transformation from an ambient crystalline phase to an intermediate crystal structure and a subsequent recrystallization into a cubic phase at ∼64 GPa. The crystalline-to-amorphous transition was identified on the basis of elastic compatibility criteria. The measured tin vibrational density of states shows large amplitude librations of SnI 4 under ambient conditions. Although high pressure structures of SnI 4 were thought to be determined by random packing of equal-sized spheres, we detected electron charge transfer in each phase. This charge transfer results in a crystal structure packing determined by larger than expected iodine atoms.
