    Description: During a survey of cold-adapted fungi in alpine glaciers on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, 1 428 fungal isolates were obtained of which 150 species were preliminary identified. Phoma sclerotioides and Pseudogymnoascus pannorum were the most dominant species. Psychrotolerant species in Helotiales (Leotiomycetes, Ascomycota) were studied in more detail as they represented the most commonly encountered group during this investigation. Two phylogenetic trees were constructed based on the partial large subunit nrDNA (LSU) to infer the taxonomic placements of these strains. Our strains nested in two well-supported major clades, which represented Tetracladium and a previously unknown lineage. The unknown lineage is distant to any other currently known genera in Helotiales. Psychrophila gen. nov. was therefore established to accommodate these strains which are characterised by globose or subglobose conidia formed from phialides on short or reduced conidiophores. Our analysis also showed that an LSU-based phylogeny is insufficient in differentiating strains at species level. Additional analyses using combined sequences of ITS+TEF1+TUB regions were employed to further investigate the phylogenetic relationships of these strains. Together with the recognisable morphological distinctions, six new species (i.e. P. antarctica, P. lutea, P. oli-vacea, T. ellipsoideum, T. globosum and T. psychrophilum) were described. Our preliminary investigation indicates a high diversity of cold-adapted species in nature, and many of them may represent unknown species.

    Description: Synthesizing antiferromagnets with correlated oxides has been challenging, owing partly to the markedly degraded ferromagnetism of the magnetic layer at nanoscale thicknesses. Here we report on the engineering of an antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling (AF-IEC) between ultrathin but ferromagnetic La 2/3 Ca 1/3 MnO 3 layers across an insulating CaRu 1/2 Ti 1/2 O 3 spacer. The layer-resolved magnetic switching leads to sharp steplike hysteresis loops with magnetization plateaus depending on the repetition number of the stacking bilayers. The magnetization configurations can be switched at moderate fields of hundreds of oersted. Moreover, the AF-IEC can also be realized with an alternative magnetic layer of La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 that possesses a Curie temperature near room temperature. The findings will add functionalities to devices with correlated-oxide interfaces.

    Description: DExD/H box RNA helicases play essential roles in various biological processes in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. By screening Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains with mutations in various DExD/H box helicase genes, we identified that deaD was required for bacterial cytotoxicity and virulence in a mouse acute pneumonia model. Compared to a wild-type strain and its complementation strain, the deaD mutant induced less production of proinflammatory cytokines, neutrophil infiltration and lung damage during infection. We further found that the RNA helicase activity of DeaD was required for the expression of type III secretion system (T3SS) genes. Overexpression of ExsA, a master activator of the T3SS, restored the expression of T3SS genes as well as the virulence of the deaD mutant, suggesting that the attenuated virulence of the deaD mutant was mainly due to the defective T3SS. Overall, our results reveal a role of DeaD in the virulence of P. aeruginosa .
