    Description: An aberrant bi-apical Follicucullus specimen (Albaillellaria, Radiolaria) has been discovered from an upper Guadalupian (Middle Permian) chert block of the Kamiaso Unit of the Mino terrane, central Japan. If this specimen was formed with double malformation, it would be the oldest record of this phenomenon in radiolarians and the first record of its kind in Albaillellaria.

    Description: High PM2. 5 concentrations of around 100 µg m−3 were observed twice during an intensive observation campaign in January 2015 at Fukuoka (33.52° N, 130.47° E) in western Japan. These events were analyzed comprehensively with a regional chemical transport model and synergetic ground-based observations with state-of-the-art measurement systems, which can capture the behavior of secondary inorganic aerosols (SO42−, NO3−, and NH4+). The first episode of high PM2. 5 concentration was dominated by NO3− (type N) and the second episode by SO42− (type S). The concentration of NH4+ (the counterion for SO42− and NO3−) was high for both types. A sensitivity simulation in the chemical transport model showed that the dominant contribution was from transboundary air pollution for both types. To investigate the differences between these types further, the chemical transport model results were examined, and a backward trajectory analysis was used to provide additional information. During both types of episodes, high concentrations of NO3− were found above China, and an air mass that originated from northeast China reached Fukuoka. The travel time from the coastline of China to Fukuoka differed between types: it was 18 h for type N and 24 h for type S. The conversion ratio of SO2 to SO42− (Fs) was less than 0.1 for type N, but reached 0.3 for type S as the air mass approached Fukuoka. The higher Fs for type S was related to the higher relative humidity and the concentration of HO2, which produces H2O2, the most effective oxidant for the aqueous-phase production of SO42−. Analyzing the gas ratio as an indicator of the sensitivity of NO3− to changes in SO42− and NH4+ showed that the air mass over China was NH3-rich for type N, but almost NH3-neutral for type S. Thus, although the high concentration of NO3− above China gradually decreased during transport from China to Fukuoka, higher NO3− concentrations were maintained during transport owing to the lower SO42− for type N. In contrast, for type S, the production of SO42− led to the decomposition of NH4NO3, and more SO42− was transported. Notably, the type N transport pattern was limited to western Japan, especially the island of Kyushu. Transboundary air pollution dominated by SO42− (type S) has been recognized as a major pattern of pollution over East Asia. However, our study confirms the importance of transboundary air pollution dominated by NO3−, which will help refine our understanding of transboundary heavy PM2. 5 pollution in winter over East Asia.

    Description: While low latitude auroral displays are normally considered to be a manifestation of magnetic storms of considerable size, Silverman (2003, JGR, 108, A4) reported numerous sporadic auroras which appear locally at relatively low magnetic latitudes during times of just moderate magnetic activity. Here, a case study is presented of an aurora near the geomagnetic equator based on a report from the Philippine Islands on 27 October 1856. An analysis of this report shows it to be consistent with the known cases of sporadic aurorae except for its considerably low magnetic latitude. The record also suggests that extremely low-latitude aurora is not always accompanied with large magnetic storms. The description of its brief appearance leads to a possible physical explanation based on an ephemeral magnetospheric disturbance provoking this sporadic aurora.

    Description: The sourcing locations and mechanisms for short-period, upward-propagating gravity waves at high polar latitudes remain largely unknown. Using all-sky imager data from the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, we determine the spatial and temporal characteristics of 94 observed small-scale waves in 3 austral winter months in 2003 and 2004. These data, together with background atmospheres from synoptic and/or climatological empirical models, are used to model gravity wave propagation from the polar mesosphere to each wave's source using a ray-tracing model. Our results provide a compelling case that a significant proportion of the observed waves are launched in several discrete layers in the tropopause and/or stratosphere. Analyses of synoptic geopotentials and temperatures indicate that wave formation is a result of baroclinic instability processes in the stratosphere and the interaction of planetary waves with the background wind fields in the tropopause. These results are significant for defining the influences of the polar vortex on the production of these small-scale, upward-propagating gravity waves at the highest polar latitudes.

    Description: Deep biosphere research has become one of the major scientific focuses in ocean drilling science. Increased scientific attention to microbiological research of the subseafloor environment raises the complications and concerns related to adherence to the Nagoya Protocol of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Nagoya Protocol's implementation has prompted new legislation that could change international collaborative research on the geomicrobiology of the subseafloor. In this paper, we summarize the central points of the Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit-sharing (ABS) and discuss their relationship to ocean drilling research. In addition, we addressed the challenges faced by ocean drilling in complying with this international convention.

    Description: 17O anomalies were used to quantify the influence of changes in land use and population density between each catchment area on the fate of atmospheric nitrate by determining the areal distribution and seasonal variation in stable isotopic compositions including the 17O anomalies (Δ17O) of nitrate for more than 30 streams within the same watershed. Those in precipitation (wet deposition; n = 213) sampled at Sado-seki monitoring station were determined for three years as well. The deposited nitrate showed similar large 17O anomalies with those already reported for mid-latitudes: Δ17O values ranged from +18.6‰ to +32.4‰ with a three-year average of +26.3‰. However, nitrate in each inflow stream showed small annual average Δ17O values ranging from +0.5‰ to +3.1‰, which corresponds to the mixing ratios of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate to total nitrate from 1.8 ± 0.3% to 11.8 ± 1.8%, with 5.1 ± 0.5% as the average of all inflow streams. Although the annual average Δ17O values tended to be smaller in accordance with the increase in annual average nitrate concentration from 12.7 to 106.2 μmol L−1, the absolute concentrations of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate in the streams were almost stable at 2.3 ± 1.1 μmol L−1 irrespective of the changes in population density and land use in each catchment area. We conclude that changes in population density and land use between each catchment area had little impact on the concentration of atmospheric nitrate. Thus, the total nitrate concentration originated primarily from additional contribution of remineralized nitrate from both natural sources, having values of +4.4 ± 1.8‰ and −2.3 ± 0.9‰ for δ15N and δ18O, respectively, and anthropogenic sources having values of +9.2 ± 1.3‰ and −2.2 ± 1.1‰ for δ15N and δ18O, respectively. In addition, both the uniform absolute concentration of atmospheric nitrate and the low and uniform δ18O values of the remineralized portion of nitrate in the streams imply that in-stream removal of nitrate through assimilation or denitrification had small impact on the concentrations and stable isotopic compositions of nitrate in the streams, except for a few streams in summer having catchments of urban/suburban land uses. Additional measurements of the Δ17O values of nitrate together with δ15N and δ18O enabled us to exclude the contribution of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate from the determined δ15N and δ18O values of total nitrate and to use the corrected δ15N and δ18O values to evaluate the source and behaviour of the remineralized portion of nitrate in each stream.

    Description: The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 337 was the first expedition dedicated to subseafloor microbiology that used riser-drilling technology with the drilling vessel Chikyu. The drilling Site C0020 is located in a forearc basin formed by the subduction of the Pacific Plate off the Shimokita Peninsula, Japan, at a water depth of 1180 m. Primary scientific objectives during Expedition 337 were to study the relationship between the deep microbial biosphere and a series of  ∼  2 km deep subseafloor coalbeds and to explore the limits of life in the deepest horizons ever probed by scientific ocean drilling. To address these scientific objectives, we penetrated a 2.466 km deep sedimentary sequence with a series of lignite layers buried around 2 km below the seafloor. The cored sediments, as well as cuttings and logging data, showed a record of dynamically changing depositional environments in the former forearc basin off the Shimokita Peninsula during the late Oligocene and Miocene, ranging from warm-temperate coastal backswamps to a cool water continental shelf. The occurrence of small microbial populations and their methanogenic activity were confirmed down to the bottom of the hole by microbiological and biogeochemical analyses. The factors controlling the size and viability of ultra-deep microbial communities in those warm sedimentary habitats could be the increase in demand of energy and water expended on the enzymatic repair of biomolecules as a function of the burial depth. Expedition 337 provided a test ground for the use of riser-drilling technology to address geobiological and biogeochemical objectives and was therefore a crucial step toward the next phase of deep scientific ocean drilling.

    Description: In this study, we demonstrate the application of tritium in precipitation and baseflow to estimate groundwater transit times and storage volumes in Hokkaido, Japan. To establish the long-term history of tritium concentration in Japanese precipitation, we used tritium data from the global network of isotopes in precipitation and from local studies in Japan. The record developed for Tokyo area precipitation was scaled for Hokkaido using tritium values for precipitation based on wine grown at Hokkaido. Then, tritium concentrations measured with high accuracy in river water from Hokkaido, Japan, were compared to this scaled precipitation record and used to estimate groundwater mean transit times (MTTs). A total of 16 river water samples in Hokkaido were collected in June, July, and October 2014 at 12 locations with altitudes between 22 and 831 m above sea level and catchment areas between 14 and 377 km2. Measured tritium concentrations were between 4.07 (± 0.07) TU and 5.29 (± 0.09) TU in June, 5.06 (± 0.09) TU in July, and between 3.75 (± 0.07) TU and 4.85 (± 0.07) TU in October. We utilised TracerLPM (Jurgens et al., 2012) for MTT estimation and introduced a Visual Basic module to automatically simulate tritium concentrations and relative errors for selected ranges of MTTs, exponential–piston ratios, and scaling factors of tritium input. Using the exponential (70 %) piston flow (30 %) model (E70 %PM), we simulated unique MTTs for seven river samples collected in six Hokkaido headwater catchments because their low tritium concentrations were no longer ambiguous. These river catchments are clustered in similar hydrogeological settings of Quaternary lava as well as Tertiary propylite formations near Sapporo city. However, nine river samples from six other catchments produced up to three possible MTT values with E70 % PM due to the interference by the tritium from the atmospheric hydrogen bomb testing 5–6 decades ago. For these catchments, we show that tritium in Japanese groundwater will reach natural levels in a decade, when one tritium measurement will be sufficient to estimate a unique MTT. Using a series of tritium measurements over the next few years with 3-year intervals will enable us to estimate the correct MTT without ambiguity in this period. These unique MTTs will allow estimation of groundwater storage volumes for water resources management during droughts and improvement of numerical model simulations. For example, the groundwater storage ranges between 0.013 and 5.07 km3 with saturated water thickness from 0.2 and 24 m. In summary, we emphasise three important points from our findings: (1) one tritium measurement is already sufficient to estimate MTTs for some Japanese catchments, (2) the hydrogeological settings control the tritium transit times of subsurface groundwater storage during baseflow, and (3) in the future, one tritium measurement will be sufficient to estimate MTTs in most Japanese watersheds.
