Description: The characteristics of magnetized electron sheath near a positively biased conducting wall parallel to magnetic field formed between two permanent magnetic plates were experimentally investigated in a double plasma device. The magnetic field strength between the magnetic plates is about 1200 G which is sufficient to magnetize the plasma such that the ion gyroradius is comparable to the electron Debye length. A virtual cathode (or potential dip) structure was found between the electron-rich sheath and bulk plasma. For a given neutral gas pressure, the potential minimum (dip position) remains almost the same for different positive biases on the wall. For a given bias on the wall, however, the electron sheath thickness and the potential drop from the bulk plasma to the dip decrease with the increase of the neutral gas pressure. In addition, the electron sheath and potential dip appear to be wider and deeper in the downstream side of the wall.

Description: Using first-principles method and Boltzmann theory, we provide an accurate prediction of the electronic band structure and thermoelectric transport properties of α -MgAgSb. Our calculations demonstrate that only when an appropriate exchange-correlation functional is chosen can we correctly reproduce the semiconducting nature of this compound. By fine tuning the carrier concentration, the thermoelectric performance of α -MgAgSb can be significantly optimized, which exhibits a strong temperature dependence and gives a maximum ZT value of 1.7 at 550 K. We also provide a simple map by which one can efficiently find the best doping atoms and optimal doping content.

Description: Nonlinear multi-scale interactions between the tearing mode and the ion temperature gradient (ITG) mode are investigated by means of numerical simulations in a self-consistent 5-field Landau-fluid model. It is observed that there exists a threshold of magnetic island width in the nonlinear evolution of interaction, above which the ITG turbulence can enhance the island growth significantly. Dependence of the threshold on basic plasma parameters is deeply analyzed. It is found that the higher ion viscosity may raise the threshold through its effect on the E × B drift and the diamagnetic drift of electron density gradient in different ways, both of which play a synergetic role in determining the threshold. Moreover, the effects of plasma resistivity, gradient length of equilibrium current sheet as well as magnetic shear of field line on the threshold are discussed based on the analyses of the initial growth rate of islands.
