Notes: Abstract Mid-water, oceanic crustaceans were either fed food labelled with (14C) palmitic acid under controlled conditions, or injected directly with (14C) palmitic acid. Lipid classes and their constituent fatty acids and fatty alcohols were subsequently separated and assayed for radioactivity. Significant levels of radioactivity were present in the 16:01 alcohols and 18:1 acids of wax esters, and in the 16:0/16:1, 18:0/18:1, 20:5 and 22:6 acids of both triglycerides and phospholipids. It was concluded that these crustaceans were capable of biosynthesis of wax esters and higher polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Notes: Abstract The work reported in this article addresses the kinematic calibration of a robot manipulator using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) which is able to obtain the full pose of the end-effector. A kinematic model is developed for the manipulator, its relationship to the world coordinate frame and the tool. The derivation of the tool pose from experimental measurements is discussed, as is the identification methodology. A complete simulation of the experiment is performed, allowing the observation strategy to be defined. The experimental work is described together with the parameter identification and accuracy verification. The principal conclusion is that the method is able to calibrate the robot successfully, with a resulting accuracy approaching that of its repeatability.

Notes: Summary Quantitative trace-enrichment of cytokinins from a plant source (xylem sap from the Douglasfir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) has been achieved by adsorption onto octadecyl-silica columns followed by elution with ethanol. Adsorption is rapid and efficient and allows complete recovery of cytokinins at the nanomolar level. Douglas-fir sap contains at least four compounds having cytokinin activity, one of which co-elutes with zeatin and another with ribosylzeatin.

Notes: Summary The effect of renal and/or hepatic dysfunction, and of concomitant spironolactone therapy, on seven commercial digoxin assays was evaluated in 45 patients taking both these drugs, and a comparison made with the digoxin concentrations measured using the same assays in 30 patients taking digoxin in the absence of spironolactone. The study showed that increasing renal dysfunction resulted in increasing inaccuracy in assay results with the methods tested. The influence of concomitant spironolactone was to produce a further distortion, which was shown to be additive in patients with impaired renal and/or liver function. The results highlight the unresolved specificity problems which persist in many, if not all, of the immunoassays currently offered to clinical laboratories which, if not recognised, could significantly influence digoxin therapy and patient management.

Notes: Summary Thirteen cancer patients were studied following a total of 41 courses of epirubicin (EPI) (38–50 mg·m−2, mean 49.2 mg·m−2, administered by a 60 min infusion), together with other cancer chemotherapeutic agents. The aim was to consider the disposition of EPI and metabolites following subsequent courses as it has been reported that doxorubicin (the 4′-epimer parent of EPI) clearance is increased following the first administration. We have observed that EPI-glucuronide accounted for a mean 78.0%, epirubicinol 0.2% and epirubicinol-glucuronide 19.3% and that parent EPI accounted for only 2.4% of the EPI-compounds measured (mean of all patients and courses) for the 3 h period immediately following the infusion. These data confirm the rapid metabolism of EPI and the dominance of the glucuronidation metabolite pathway (which is not available to doxorubicin) and are compared with the metabolite profile observed in other reports. Large inter- and intra-individual variability in area under the plasma concentration/time curve were observed with no clear evidence of any consistent directional trend for such fluctuations, suggesting that factors contributing to EPI disposition are multivariate.
