Description: Biotope crest as part of the coral´s reef is an important natural resource and ecological value. In this research the objective was evaluate the health of the reef crest of playa Baracoa (PB) and Rincón de Guanabo (RG). We surveyed on six stations located in each reef between June 2015 and April 2016. We selected as ecological indicators: health and temporal variation of sea’s temperature. For indicator health, we were two categories: active diseases and affectation. These indicators were estimated by using a 10m long by 1m wide band transept, it was also used as sampling unit (US), a modification of the lin- ear transept. We put 10 US for stations and a temperature sensor for each place. The analysis of affectations showed an increase of 15.5% in playa Baracoa, superior to Rincón de Guanabo (2.1%). The main affectation was bioerosion. During this study, active diseases decreased on the reef crest of playa Baracoa (5.2%) and in- creased in the Rincón de Guanabo (0.5%). While mean temperature didn´t vary between reefs (28.1±0.1 oC (RG) and 28.2±0.1 oC (PB)), temperatures showed temporal variations with minimum values of 24.4 oC in February and maxi- mum values of 31.2 oC in September. Highest values of whitening colonies were found in low- er temperatures months. An integrated analysis of the ecological indicators evaluated, suggests that populations of Acropora palmata in both reef crests, can be considered in relatively good condition of health.

We selected as ecological indicators: density and spatial size variation of A. palmata’s colonies, D. antillarum density and substrate coverage. These indicators were estimated by linear transept and band transept, a modification of the linear transept. A. palmata colonies density was 7.3 ± 0.6 colonies/10 m2 in playa Baracoa and 22.9 ± 1.6 colonies/10 m2 in Rincón de Guanabo. D. antillarum density was 14.0 ± 1.3 individuals/10 m2 in playa Baracoa and 0.1 ± 0.0 individuals/10 m2 in Rincón de Guanabo. Substrate coverage of living coral and rock was higher in Rincón de Guanabo (28% and 49% respectively) and substrate coverage by algae was greater in playa Baracoa (45%). An integrated analysis of the ecological indicators evaluated, suggests that both reef crests can be considered in relatively good condition.
