Description: Using electron backscattered diffraction techniques (EBSD) and optical microscopy (OM), the grain selection and competitive growth in a new-designed high-efficiency two-dimensional (2D) selector during solidification of Ni-based single-crystal (SX) superalloys have been investigated with emphasis on the geometry of the selector part in this article. It is found that the efficiency of the grain selector depends greatly on the thickness and eccentric distance of the selector part. When the thickness is smaller than 3 mm, a single grain can be selected. After reducing this value, the grain selector becomes more effective. When the eccentric distance is larger than 8 mm, one grain can be selected. As the eccentric distance increases, the selector’s efficiency is optimized. Recommendations for optimizing the geometry of the selector part are provided.

Description: To increase efficiency of water and nitrogen (N) fertilizer use, this study was conducted with a split-root pot experiment to investigate the effects of different forms of N fertilizer on root growth, photosynthesis, instantaneous water use efficiency (IWUE), and yield of tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum L.) under alternate partial root-zone irrigation (APRI). Three irrigation modes comprised conventional irrigation (CI) and two kinds of APRI, i.e ., APRI with water content in the drying soil compartment controlled at ≥ 60% or 40% of the water-holding capacity (APRI-60, APRI-40). Two N forms included ammonium-N and nitrate-N supplied as calcium nitrate or ammonium sulfate, respectively. The results show that APRI-60 enhanced root growth and increased leaf IWUE with a slight yield reduction compared with CI regardless of the N form supplied. In contrast, APRI-40 significantly decreased root growth and inhibited photosynthesis, thereby resulting in a significant yield loss. In addition, at the flowering stage tomato plants grew better with ammonium-N than nitrate-N supply; however, at the fruit expansion stage and maturity stage, the tomato plants had a higher biomass accumulation and yield with nitrate-N than ammonium-N supply. Therefore, the application of APRI should consider the soil water condition coupled with an appropriate N form. In the present study, APRI controlled at ≥ 60% of the water-holding capacity (WHC) for the drying soil side with nitrate-N supply was the best water-fertilizer supply for tomato cultivation.

Description: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) open up a new field for molecular diagnosis for cancer and other diseases based on their stability in serum. However, the role of circulating miRNAs in plasma/serum in epilepsy diagnosis is still unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether miRNAs can be used as biomarkers for drug-resistant epilepsy. We measured the differences in serum miRNA levels between 30 drug-resistant patients and 30 drug-responsive epilepsy patients in discovery and training phases using Illumina HiSeq2000 sequencing followed by quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assays. The selected miRNAs were then validated in 77 drug-resistant epilepsy patients, 81 drug-responsive epilepsy patients and 85 healthy controls by qRT-PCR. We found that circulating miRNAs are differentially expressed between drug-resistant group and drug-responsive group. MiR-194-5p, -301a-3p, -30b-5p, -342-5p and -4446-3p were significantly deregulated in drug-resistant group compared to drug-responsive group and control group. Among these 5 miRNAs, miR-301a-3p had the best diagnostic value for drug-resistant epilepsy with 80.5% sensitivity and 81.2% specificity, and was negatively associated with seizure severity. These provide the rationale for further confirmation studies in larger prospective cohorts and in other ethnics. Scientific Reports 5 doi: 10.1038/srep10201

Description: Green emitting InGaN/GaN multi-quantum well samples were investigated using transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence (PL), and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy. Weak carrier localization with characteristic energy of ∼12 meV due to an inhomogeneous distribution of In in the InGaN quantum (QW) layer is observed. The temperature dependence of the PL peak energy exhibits S-shape phenomenon and is comparatively discussed within the framework of the Varshni's empirical formula. The full width at half maximum of the PL emission band shows an increasing-decreasing-increasing behavior with increasing temperature arising from the localized states caused by potential fluctuations. The radiative life time, τ r , extracted from the TRPL profile shows ∼ T 3/2 dependence on temperature above 200 K, which confirms the absence of the effect of carrier localization at room temperature.

Description: We demonstrate quantum information can be transferred between two distant participants without any physical particles traveling between them. The key procedure of the counterfactual scheme is to entangle two nonlocal qubits with each other without interaction, so the scheme can also be used to generate nonlocal entanglement counterfactually. We here illustrate the scheme by using flying photon qubits and Rydberg atom qubits assisted by a mesoscopic atomic ensemble. Unlike the typical teleportation, the present scheme can transport an unknown qubit in a nondeterministic manner without prior entanglement sharing or classical communication between the two distant participants. Description: Refractory high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have excellent mechanical properties, which could make them the substitutes of some superalloys. However, the high melting point of refractory HEAs leads to processing problems when using traditional processing techniques. In this study, a single BCC solid solution of NbMoTaW alloy was formed by selective laser melting (SLM) with a linear energy density of up to 2.83 J/mm. The composition distribution was analyzed, and the element with a lower melting point and lower density showed a negative deviation (no more than 5%) of the molar ratio in the formed alloy. The HEA shows an excellent microstructure, microhardness, and corrosion resistance performance compared with traditional superalloys, making it a new substitute metal with great application prospects in aerospace and energy fields.

Description: With the increasing integration of huge-size generators and tighter interconnection among power grids, in internal fault, the fault current of Series Compensated (SC) lines may be reversed. At this time, the differential protection of SC lines may fail to operate due to insufficient sensitivity. In this research analyzes the reasons for the current reverse in SC lines and its effect on differential protection. The operation characteristics of differential protection are studied by focusing on multiple factors, including different series compensation degree, fault types, system operation mode, power angle difference, fault points, and transition resistance. An improved criterion based on the current amplitudes and phases on both sides of the series compensated lines is proposed. Further, to strengthen the operation characteristics of differential protection, the triple-fold line is chosen to improve the sensitivity for internal faults in this paper. The criterion is effective to improve the protection sensitivity of SC lines during internal fault. The PSCAD/EMTDC simulation and the power system dynamic physics simulation demonstrates that protection sensitivity is obviously increased in the improved scheme.
