Description: Purpose Food-based dietary guidelines are proposed to not only improve diet quality, but to also reduce the environmental impact of diets. The aim of our study was to investigate whether food-related behavioral activation therapy (F-BA) applying Mediterranean-style dietary guidelines altered food intake and the environmental impact of the diet in overweight adults with subsyndromal symptoms of depression. Methods In total 744 adults who either received the F-BA intervention (F-BA group) or no intervention (control group) for 12 months were included in this analysis. Food intake data were collected through a food frequency questionnaire at baseline and after 6 and 12 months. Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), land use (LU), and fossil energy use (FEU) estimates from life-cycle assessments and a weighted score of the three (pReCiPe score) were used to estimate the environmental impact of each individual diet at each timepoint. Results The F-BA group reported increased intakes of vegetables (19.7 g/day; 95% CI 7.8–31.6), fruit (23.0 g/day; 9.4–36.6), fish (7.6 g/day; 4.6–10.6), pulses/legumes (4.0 g/day; 1.6–6.5) and whole grains (12.7 g/day; 8.0–17.5), and decreased intake of sweets/extras (− 6.8 g/day; − 10.9 to − 2.8) relative to control group. This effect on food intake resulted in no change in GHGE, LU, and pReCiPe score, but a relative increase in FEU by 1.6 MJ/day (0.8, 2.4). Conclusions A shift towards a healthier Mediterranean-style diet does not necessarily result in a diet with reduced environmental impact in a real-life setting. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov. Number of identification: NCT02529423. August 2015.

Description: An externally heated, hollow cathode arc source was recommissioned at UCLA for use in experiments to drive plasma wakefields with shaped beams at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator. The hollow cathode arc source provides a robust plasma column with a density in the 10 13 – 10 14 cm − 3 range while external heating of the cathode allows the plasma arc regime to be accessed with applied voltages down to 20 V. Overall source operating principals are described, along with time-resolved plasma current measurements and plasma density characterization with the use of a triple Langumir probe. The results show that relevant plasma densities that match facility beam parameters are readily achievable.

Notes: Summary A convenient constant reproducible aerosol has been a long-felt need for satisfactory research and development purposes in the field of Aitken nucleus studies. An account is given of a recent attempt to produce such an aerosol by radiolytic methods. It consists of the introduction of α-particle sources of different activities into nucleus-free air in aerosol containers. Condensation nuclei in the Aitken size-range are produced by radiolytic reactions in the air. The concentration, size and size-distribution of the particles have been measured for sources of various activities and the results are sufficiently consistent to allow us to state that radiolytic production seems a promising approach to the problem of providing aerosols of particles lying in the lower Aitken nucleus size range.

Notes: Summary Theoretical considerations are put forward for identifying the Dynamic and Static Methods of Diffusion measurements of aerosol particles. On the basic of this equality the Exhaustion Method of Diffusion developed byPollak andMetnieks for the size-frequency resolution of a heterogeneous aerosol by Dynamic Diffusion Methods should be applicable to Static Methods. This hypothesis is tested using a Pollak-Nolan nucleus counter as decay vessel. It is shown that turbulence in the counter is the most serious obstacle against this type of approach to finding the size components of an aerosol. The time involved, the high humidity in the counter and a hypothetical nucleus-free zone are other major difficulties for relatively large Aitken nuclei. It is established, however, that for particles whose diffusion coefficient is of the order of 10−3 cm2 sec−1, the proposed method should be quite workable.

Notes: Summary A description is given of an attempt to adapt a Pollak-Nolan photo-electric nucleus counter for the purpose of obtaining a general picture of the size frequency distribution of an aerosol of Aitken nuclei. The principle of the method is that of differential evaporation of the large and small water droplets formed at an expansion on different sized nuclei in the counter. A number of features of fog decay in a counter, which militate against the success of the method, are recorded. The results obtained with the spectrometer are discussed in the light of the difficulties encountered.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The data analysis of eighteen stations located in France have shown the possibility of distinguishing several main types of transport. The first type of transport shows a perfectly regular and homogeneous distribution of radioactive debris in clouds. The second type of transport results in a regular distribution of debris over the country independent of the clouds systems. In the third type the debris is distributed irregularly and the fall-out is perfectly independent of the cloud-rain system. The three types follow each other in a way continuous with time. The irregular and independent transport type immediately follows the explosions. The regular distribution of debris, but still independent of the cloud system, comes later and the debris will be mainly of tropospheric origin. The irregular and non homogeneous distributions of debris will be characteristic of recent explosions and correspond to fall-out of tropospheric origin.

Notes: Summary 3-Thianaphthenoyltrifluoroacetone has been proposed for the spectrophotometric determination of iron(III). The 3∶1 complex is very stable and can be extracted from acid solution into chloroform. Beer's law is obeyed and the molar extinction coefficient is 5.0·103 at 516 nm. Relatively large amounts of cobalt, nickel and copper are tolerated. The method is simple, convenient and reproducible.

Notes: Summary An aerosol in charge equilibrium is theoretically and numerically investigated for plasma-like behaviour. It is shown that in sufficiently large containers the common type aerosols should manifest the properties of a plasma as regards their behaviour in an electric field. Such aerosols do not unambiguously possess a plasma frequency nor can they be termed a magnetoplasma. The results of this investigation may help to understand certain phenomena in atmospheric electricity.
